Sefer Ḥeit Qaneh

The words of Avraham Rothenburg at the opening of Sefer Ḥeit Qaneh

Awesome visions (מַרְאוֹת נוֹרוֹאוֹת), the Portuguese one, Rabbi Shlomo Molcho is his name (הַפּוֹרְטוּגָלִי, רַבִּי שְׁלֹמֹה מוֹלְכוֹ שְׁמוֹ). And if I speak even a whisper of it, my intent is (וְאִם שֶׁמֶץ מִנְיָהּ אָמַרְתִּי כַּוָּנָתִי), lest I come to an act of betrayal (פֶּן אָבוֹא לִידֵי מְעִילָה). I will offer my portion as well (אֲעַנֶּה חֶלְקִי גַּם אֲנִי), even if it be meager in measure (וְאִם הוּא קָצוּר הַכַּמּוּת), and the Ancient of Days will grant me merit to utter sealed words (וְעַתִּיק יוֹמִין יִזְכֵּנִי לְמִילִין סְתוּמִין), for the holy one was seen like an angel of Hashem Tzevaot (שֶׁרָאָה הַקָּדוֹשׁ כְּמַלְאַךְ ה׳ צְבָאוֹת), and one cannot grasp the revelation of his sealed depths (וְאֵין לְהָבִין לְגַלּוֹת עֹמֶק סְתוּמוֹ).

From a gesture of my opinion I crept forward (מֵחֲוַת דַּעִי זְחַלְתִּי), only in twenty-eight appointed times, which is a revealed secret (רַק בְּכ״ח עִתִּים שֶׁהוּא סוֹד נִגְלֶה), as they were shown to me from the heavens (כַּאֲשֶׁר מִן הַשָּׁמַיִם יֵרָאוּנִי). He is a ladder set upon the earth with its head reaching into mysteries And to eternal life, Amen And I called it Ḥeit Qaneh, on account of the vision of the first living creature (chayah) that Rabbi Shlomo, of blessed memory, saw (וְקְרָאתִיו חֵית קָנֶה עַל שֵׁם מַרְאוֹת חַיָּה הָרִאשׁוֹנָה שֶׁרָאָה רַבִּי שְׁלֹמֹה הַנִּזְכָּר), the one who contemplates the Zohar in Bamidbar (הַמַּשְׂכִּיל הַמְּעַיֵּן בַּזֹּהַר בְּבַמִּדְבָּר), (page 406 and Ra‘ya Meheimna there) (עַמּוּד תס"ו וּבְרַעְיָא מְהֵימְנָא שָׁם), the matter upon which he built (הָעִנְיָן עָלָיו בָּנָה). And why should one begrudge a coin (וְעַל תָּחוּשׁ עַל הַמֵּעָה), and what is it to strengthen the hand of one who engages in eternal life (וּמַה לְהַחֲזִיק יָד לָעוֹסֵק בְּחַיֵּי עוֹלָם), if you support the hands of the impoverished (אִם תַּחֲזִיק יַד חַלְכָּאִים), and so on and so forth up to one hundredfold (וְכַהֵנָּה וְכַהֵנָּה עַד מֵאָה פְּעָמִים). And the second creature (chayah), in the wisdom of Kabbalah, is diligent and rewarded (וְחַיָּה שְׁנִיָּיה, בְּחָכְמַת הַקַּבָּלָה זָרִיז וְנִשְׂכָּר). One who understands will recognize that this sage is the builder (יָבִין שֶׁחָכָם הַנ״ל הַבִּנְיָן), and the name derives from “Buy truth and do not sell” (וְעַל שֵׁם ״אֱמֶת קְנֵה).

For “your brother shall live with you” is said regarding temporal life (מִשּׁוּם ״וְחֵי אָחִיךָ עִמָּךְ״ נֶאֱמַר בְּחַיֵּי שָׁעָה), so that you may live forever (שֶׁתִּחְיֶה לְעוֹלָם), May you merit the consolations and salvations foretold by the prophets (תִּזְכֶּה לְנֶחָמוֹת וִישׁוּעוֹת שֶׁהִתְנַבְּאוּ הַנְּבִיאִים), “Only goodness and mercy shall pursue me, and I shall dwell in the house of Hashem for length of days” (Psalms 23:6) (״אַךְ טוֹב וָחֶסֶד יִרְדְּפוּנִי וְשַׁבְתִּי בְּבֵית ה׳ לְאֹרֶךְ יָמִים). Printed in Amsterdam, in the house of the nobleman Uri Veibesh son of the sage Rabbi Aharon Halevi of blessed memory

Notes

  1. Until here is the text from the title page of the first edition of Sefer Ḥeit Qaneh (עַד כָּאן הַטֶּקְסְט שֶׁבְּשַׁעַר הַמַּהֲדוּרָה הָרִאשׁוֹנָה שֶׁל סֵפֶר חֵית קָנֶה), see facsimile on page 145 (רְאוּ צִילוּם בַּע׳ קמ"ה), in which Avraham Rothenburg explains that in the name Ḥeit Qaneh (שֶׁבּוֹ מַסְבִּיר אַבְרָהָם רוֹטֶנְבּוּרְג שֶׁבַּשֵּׁם "חֵית קָנֶה)-Ḥeit points to the living creatures that Rasham saw in the vision he beheld in Rome (״חֵית״ מַצְבִּיעָה עַל הַחַיּוֹת אֲשֶׁר רָאָה רַש״ם בַּחֲזָיוֹן אֲשֶׁר חָזָה בְּרוֹמָא), and the word Qaneh alludes to Proverbs 23:23: “Buy the truth” (וְהַמִּלָּה "קָנֶה" מְרַמֶּזֶת לִמְשָׁלֵי כ״ג:כ״ג – "אֱמֶת קְנֵה). And as Rothenburg continues to write (וּכְמוֹ שֶׁמַּמְשִׁיךְ וְכוֹתֵב רוֹטֶנְבּוּרְג), “And do not begrudge a coin” (״וְאַל תָּחוּשׁ עַל הַמֵּעָה״). The expression Ḥeit Qaneh appears in Psalms 68:31 (הַבִּטּוּי "חֵית קָנֶה" מוֹפִיעַ בִּתְהִלִּים ס״ח:ל״א), but Rothenburg does not mention it (אֲבָל רוֹטֶנְבּוּרְג אֵינוֹ מַזְכִּירוֹ). And according to the Zohar’s interpretation of that verse (וּלְפִי פֵּרוּשׁ הַזֹּהַר לְאוֹתוֹ הַפָּסוּק), the chayah is that which Esav grasped onto (הַחַיָּה הִיא שֶׁנֶּאֱחַז בָּהּ עֵשָׂו), and the qaneh is the one which Gavriel planted in the great sea at the site where Rome was built (וְהַקָּנֶה הוּא שֶׁנָּעַץ גַּבְרִיאֵל בְּיָמָּא רַבָּא בַּמָּקוֹם שֶׁנִּבְנְתָה רוֹמָא), and in the future the Holy One Blessed Be He will break its dominion like a reed (וְעָתִיד הקב״ה לִשְׁבֹּר אֶת שִׁלְטוֹנָהּ כְּמוֹ קָנֶה) (Zohar, Volume III, 151b–152a) (זֹהַר חֵלֶק ג׳, קנ״א ע״ב–קנ״ב ע״א).
