Chapter 38, Section 2 (פֶּרֶק ל״ח אוֹת ב׳)

2. And you must learn: when Mashiach is revealed, is he revealed as flesh and blood (ב. וְצָרִיךְ אַתָּה לִלְמוֹד: מָשִׁיחַ כְּשֶׁהוּא נִגְלֶה, כִּבְשַׂר וָדָם הוּא נִגְלֶה) or as an angel is he revealed? (אוֹ כְּמַלְאָךְ הוּא נִגְלֶה) This has already been explained by Daniel (כְּבָר מְפוֹרָשׁ עַל יְדֵי דָּנִיֵּאל): “And behold, with the clouds of heaven, one like a son of man came” (Daniel 7:13) (וַאֲרוּ עִם עֲנָנֵי שְׁמַיָּא כְּבַר אֱנָשׁ אָתֵה הוּא). This teaches that five hundred myriad wheels of light are handed over to him (מְלַמֵּד שֶׁמוֹסְרִין לוֹ חֲמֵשׁ מֵאוֹת רִבּוֹא גַּלְגַלֵּי אוֹר), and with him are the Holy Chayot, Seraphim, and Keruvim (וְעִמּוֹ חַיּוֹת הַקֹּדֶשׁ שְׂרָפִים וּכְרוּבִים). And when the nations of the world see him at that moment (וְכֵיוָן שֶׁרוֹאִין אוֹתוֹ אוּמוֹת הָעוֹלָם בְּאוֹתוֹ הַשָּׁעָה), they say to one another (אוֹמְרִים זֶה לָזֶה): “Could this be the one they speak of as the Mashiach?” (שֶׁמָּא זֶהוּ שֶׁאוֹמְרִין עָלָיו מָשִׁיחַ הוּא) And he says to them: “I am the Mashiach” (וְהוּא אוֹמֵר לָהֶם: אֲנִי הוּא מָשִׁיחַ). And all fall beneath the soles of his feet (שֶׁכֻּלָּם נוֹפְלִים תַּחַת כַּפוֹת רַגְלָיו), as it is said: “And I will crush his adversaries before him, and smite those who hate him” (Psalms 89:24) (שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: וְכַתּוֹתִי מִפָּנָיו צָרָיו וּמְשַׂנְאָיו אֶגּוֹף). “And I will crush his adversaries” — these are the Persians (וְכַתּוֹתִי מִפָּנָיו צָרָיו, אֵלּוּ הַפַּרְסִיִּים), who dissolve the spirit of Israel like meat in the pot (שֶׁהוּא מַשְׁקִין רוּחָן שֶׁל יִשְׂרָאֵל כְּבָשָׂר בְּתוֹךְ הַקְּדֵרָה). “And those who hate him I will smite” — these are the kings of wicked Edom (וּמְשַׂנְאָיו אֶגּוֹף, אֵלּוּ מַלְכֵי אֱדוֹם הָרְשָׁעָה), whose recompense the Holy One Blessed Be He will bring upon their own heads (שֶׁעָתִיד הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא לְהָשִׁיב גְּמוּלָם בְּרֹאשָׁם), as it is said: “I will render vengeance to My enemies and repay those who hate Me” (Deuteronomy 32:41) (שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: אָשִׁיב נָקָם לְצָרָי וְלְמְשַׂנְאַי אֲשַׁלֵּם).
