Chapter 5, Section 5 (פֶּרֶק ה׳ אוֹת ה׳)

5. And when Rabbi Nechunya ben HaKana saw this decree (ה וְכֵיוָן שֶׁרָאָה רַבִּי נְחוּנְיָא בֶּן הַקָּנָה גְּזֵרָה זוֹ), he arose and brought them down into the Merkavah (עָמַד וְהוֹרִידָם לַמֶּרְכָּבָה). The Prince of the Presence said to me (שַׂר הַפָּנִים אָמַר לִי): “Ten were given and given over to Sama’el the wicked (עֲשָׂרָה נִתְּנוּ וְנִתְּנוּ לְסַמָּאֵ״ל הָרָשָׁע), the prince of Rome (שַׂרָהּ שֶׁל רוֹמִי), to say to you: conceal and destroy from Yisrael every good portion-thigh and shoulder” (לוֹמַר לְךָ וְהַכְחֵד מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל כָּל נִתַּח טוֹב יָרֵךְ וְכָתֵף), in order to fulfill: ‘He who steals a man and sells him…’ (לְהַשְׁלִים: וְגוֹנֵב אִישׁ וּמְכָרוֹ וגו׳) - (Exodus 21:16). For the attribute of judgment stood before the Holy One, blessed be He (לְפִי שֶׁעָמְדָה מִדַּת הַדִּין לִפְנֵי הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא), and said before Him: “Master of the world! You wrote in Your Torah: ‘And he who steals a man and sells him…’ (וְאָמְרָה לְפָנָיו: רִבּוֹנוֹ שֶׁל עוֹלָם, כָּתַבְתָּ בְּתוֹרָתְךָ: וְגוֹנֵב אִישׁ וּמְכָרוֹ וגו׳), and the children of Yisrael who stole Yosef their brother and sold him-what came upon them?” (וּבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל שֶׁגָּנְבוּ אֶת יוֹסֵף אֲחִיהֶם וּמְכָרוּהוּ, מַה בָּא עֲלֵיהֶם).

Immediately permission was given to Sama’el to annihilate ten mighty ones in their stead (מִיָּד נִתְּנָה רְשׁוּת לְסַמָּאֵ״ל לְהַכְחִיד עֲשָׂרָה גִּבּוֹרִים תַּחְתֵּיהֶם), to fulfill the decree (לְהַשְׁלִים הַגְּזֵרָה), and it is preserved for vengeance (וּשְׁמוּרָה לוֹ לְהִנָּקֵם), when the time shall arrive that Hashem will punish the host of the height in the height, and afterward the kings of the earth upon the earth (כְּשֶׁיַּגִּיעַ עֵת יִפְקֹד ה׳ עַל צְבָא הַמָּרוֹם בַּמָּרוֹם וְאַחַר כֵּן עַל מַלְכֵי הָאֲדָמָה בָּאֲדָמָה) - (Isaiah 24:21), that he will be slaughtered and cast down-he and all the princes of sovereignty in the heavens-like goats and rams of Yom Kippur (שֶׁהוּא נִשְׁחָט וּמוּטָל, הוּא וְכָל שָׂרֵי מַלְכוּת שֶׁבַּמָּרוֹם, כִּגְּדָיִים וְכַכְּבָשִׂים שֶׁל יוֹם הַכִּפּוּרִים).
