Chapter 6, Section 3 (פֶּרֶק ו׳ אוֹת ג׳)

3. Rabbi Yishma’el said (ג אָמַר רַבִּי יִשְׁמָעֵאל): Sacha li Saggasga’el, Sar HaPanim, my friend (סַח לִי סַגְגַּסְגַּאֵ״ל שַׂר הַפָּנִים יְדִידִי), “Sit in my lap, and I will tell you what shall befall Yisrael” (שֵׁב בְּחֵיקִי וְאַגִּיד לְךָ מַה תְּהֵא עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל). I sat in his lap (יָשַׁבְתִּי בְּחֵיקוֹ), and he was looking at me and weeping (וְהָיָה מִסְתַּכֵּל בִּי וּבוֹכֶה), and the tears were falling from his eyes onto my face (וְהָיוּ הַדְּמָעוֹת נוֹפְלוֹת מֵעֵינָיו וְנוֹפְלוֹת עַל פָּנַי). I said to him: “Splendor of the height above, why do you weep?” (אָמַרְתִּי לוֹ: הֲדַר זִיו מָרוֹם, לָמָּה תִּבְכֶּה). He said to me: “My friend, come and I will bring you in and make known to you what is hidden for Yisrael, the holy nation” (אָמַר לִי: יְדִידִי, בֹּא וְאַכְנִיסְךָ וְאוֹדִיעֲךָ מַה גָּנוּז לְיִשְׂרָאֵל עַם קֹדֶשׁ). He took hold of me and brought me into the innermost chambers and into the treasuries of treasuries and to the storehouses of the scrolls (תָּפַשְׂנִי וְהִכְנִיסַנִי לַחַדְרֵי חֲדָרִים וּלְגִנְזֵי גְּנָזִים וּלְאוֹצְרוֹת שֶׁל הַפִּנְקָסִים), and he opened and showed me many troubles written, bound, and distinct from one another (וּפָתַח וְהֶרְאַנִי כַּמָּה צָרוֹת כְּתוּבוֹת צוֹרוֹרוֹת מְשֻׁנּוֹת זוֹ מִזּוֹ). I said to him: “These-of whom are they?” (אָמַרְתִּי לוֹ: הַלָּלוּ, לְמִי). He said to me: “For Yisrael” (אָמַר לִי: לְיִשְׂרָאֵל). I said to him: “And can they withstand them?” (אָמַרְתִּי לוֹ: וְיָכוֹלִין לַעֲמוֹד בָּהֶן). He said to me: “Tomorrow come and I will show you troubles more strange than these” (אָמַר לִי: לְמָחָר בֹּא וְאוֹדִיעֲךָ צָרוֹת מְשֻׁנּוֹת מֵאֵלּוּ). The next day he brought me into inner chambers (לְמָחָר הִכְנִיסַנִי לַחַדְרֵי חֲדָרִים), and showed me troubles more strange than the first-by sword and by famine and by captivity (וְהֶרְאַנִי צָרוֹת מְשֻׁנּוֹת מֵהָרִאשׁוֹנוֹת, אֲשֶׁר לַחֶרֶב וְלָרָעָב וְלַשְּׁבִי). I said to him: “Splendor of my glory, is it only Yisrael who sinned?” (אָמַרְתִּי לוֹ: הֲדַר זִיוִי, יִשְׂרָאֵל בִּלְבַד חָטְאוּ). He said to me: “Each day many new troubles are renewed upon them beyond these” (אָמַר לִי: בְּכָל יוֹם מִתְחַדְּשׁוֹת צָרוֹת רַבּוֹת עֲלֵיהֶם מֵאֵלּוּ), but when they enter synagogues and answer: Amen, Yehei Shemei Rabbah (וּכְשֶׁנִּכְנָסִין לְבָתֵּי כְנֵסִיּוֹת וְעוֹנִין: אָמֵן יְהֵא שְׁמֵיהּ רַבָּא), we do not allow them to leave the innermost chambers (אֵין אָנוּ מַנִּיחִין אוֹתָם לָצֵאת מֵחַדְרֵי חֲדָרִים).
