Chapter 8, Section 1 (פֶּרֶק ח׳ אוֹת א׳)

1. Rabbi Yishma’el said (א אָמַר רַבִּי יִשְׁמָעֵאל): Suri’a, Prince of the Presence, my friend, told me (סַח לִי סוּרִי״א שַׂר הַפָּנִים יְדִידִי): “I will tell you the reason for all the shame and all the disgrace of that wicked one” (אוֹמֵר לְךָ כָּל בּוּשָׁה וְכָל כְּלִימָה שֶׁל אוֹתוֹ רָשָׁע, לָמָּה). Because of Rabbi Chanina ben Teradyon, whose day had arrived to be executed (עַל רַבִּי חֲנִינָא בֶן תְּרַדְיוֹן שֶׁהִגִּיעַ יוֹמוֹ לְהֵהָרֵג). Marī Caesar said to him (אָמַר לוֹ מָרִי קֵיסָר): “Recant concerning that sage, that he not be killed” (חֲזוֹר בְּךָ עַל אוֹתוֹ חָכָם שֶׁלֹּא יֵהָרֵג). He said: “Let him die, and all his household, and let Rome be destroyed with him, and in this matter I do not recant” (אָמַר: יָמוּת הוּא וְכָל בֵּיתוֹ, וְרוֹמִי תִּסָּפֶה עִמּוֹ, וּבְדָבָר הַזֶּה אֵינִי חוֹזֵר).
