Midrash on the Song of Songs

שִׁיר הַשִּׁירִים רַבָּה

“My beloved is like a deer” (דּוֹמֶה דוֹדִי לְצְבִי). Kenesset Yisrael said before Hashem: (אָמְרָה כְּנֶסֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל לִפְנֵי הקב״ה:) Ribbono shel Olam [Master of the World], (רִבּוֹנוֹ שֶׁל עוֹלָם) You say to us “DYV DYV,” (אַתָּה אוֹמֵר לָנוּ "דַּיּוֹ דַּיּוֹ) meaning: DYAV DYAV DYAV, (פֵּירוּשׁ: דִּיא״ו דִּיא״ו דִּיא״ו) You are toward us first (אַתְּ לְגַבַּן תְּחִלָּה). “My beloved is like a deer,” (״דּוֹמֶה דוֹדִי לְצְבִי״) just as this deer leaps from mountain to mountain and from valley to valley, (מַה צְּבִי זֶה מְדַלֵּג מֵהָר לְהָר וּמִבִּקְעָה לְבִקְעָה) from tree to tree and from hut to hut and from fence to fence, (מֵאִילָן לְאִילָן וּמִסֻּכָּה לְסֻכָּה וּמִגֶּדֶר לְגֶדֶר) so too the Holy One Blessed Be He leapt from Egypt to the Sea, (כָּךְ הקב״ה קָפַץ מִמִּצְרַיִם לַיָּם) and from the Sea to Sinai, and from Sinai to the future (וּמִן הַיָּם לְסִינַי וּמִסִּינַי לֶעָתִיד).

In Egypt they saw Him, as it is said: “And I shall pass through the land of Egypt” (Exodus 12:12) (בְּמִצְרַיִם רָאוּ אוֹתוֹ שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר ״וְעָבַרְתִּי בְּאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם). At the Sea they saw Him, as it is said: “And Israel saw the great hand…” (Exodus 14:31), (בַּיָּם רָאוּ אוֹתוֹ שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר ״וַיַּרְא יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶת הַיָּד הַגְּדוֹלָה) “This is my God, and I will glorify Him.” (Exodus 15:2) (זֶה אֵלִי וְאַנְוֵהוּ). At Sinai they saw Him, as it is written: “Face to face did Hashem speak with you at the mountain” (Deuteronomy 5:4), (בְּסִינַי רָאוּ אוֹתוֹ דִּכְתִיב "פָּנִים בְּפָנִים דִּבֶּר ה׳ עִמָּכֶם בָּהָר) and it is written: “Hashem came from Sinai.” (Deuteronomy 33:2) (וּכְתִיב ״ה׳ מִסִּינַי בָּא).
