Primary text15a (ט״ו:א׳)

15a (ט״ו:א׳)

The explanation of the saying is this: (פֵּירוּשׁ הַמַּאֲמָר הוּא זֶה:) it is known what our sages of blessed memory said, (יָדוּעַ הוּא מַה שֶׁאָמְרוּ ז״ל) the Shekhinah does not dwell in fewer than ten (אֵין הַשְּׁכִינָה שׁוֹרָה פָּחוֹת מֵעֲשָׂרָה).

And therefore they instituted, for every matter of holiness (וְלָכָךְ תִּקְּנוּ לְכָל דָּבָר שֶׁבִּקְדֻשָּׁה), such as Kaddish [sanctification prayer], Barchu [the call to bless], and Kedushah [sanctification] (כְּגוֹן קַדִּישׁ וּבָרְכוּ וּקְדוּשָּׁה), that a minyan of ten is required (צָרִיךְ מִנְיָן עֲשָׂרָה). And they alluded to this in the verse: “And I shall be sanctified among the Children of Israel,” (וְרָמְזוּ זֶה ״וְנִקְדַּשְׁתִּי בְּתוֹךְ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל״) and we derive “in the midst”-“in the midst,” (וְדָרְשִׁינַן ״בְּתוֹךְ״–״בְּתוֹךְ״) as it is written: “And the children of Israel came to buy in the midst of those that came,” (דְּכָתִיב ״וַיָּבֹאוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לִשְׁבֹּר בְּתוֹךְ הַבָּאִים״) for they were ten when they descended to Egypt (שֶׁהָיוּ עֲשָׂרָה כְּשֶׁיָּרְדוּ לְמִצְרָיִם).

And they intended by this the ten Sefirot in which the Shekhinah dwells (וְכִיוְּנוּ בָּזֶה לַעֶשֶׂר סְפִירוֹת שֶׁהַשְּׁכִינָה שׁוֹרָה בָּהֶם). And this comes to explain how they saw Him in Egypt, and at the Sea, and at Sinai (וְזֶה לוֹמַר אֵיךְ רָאוּ אוֹתוֹ בְּמִצְרַיִם וְעַל הַיָּם וּבְסִינַי). And understand the intent of the saying: (וְהָבֵן כַּוָּנַת הַמַּאֲמָר) Kenesset Yisrael said: Master of the universe, (אָמְרָה כְּנֶסֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל: רִבּוֹנוֹ שֶׁל עוֹלָם) You have given us one middah (measure) (אַתָּה נָתַתָּ לָנוּ מִדָּה) that equals in Mispar katan [reduced numerical value] DI״V DI״V, (אַחַת שֶׁעוֹלָה בְּמִסְפָּר קָטָן דִּי״ו דִּי״ו) Which is makkeh [a blow] and berakhah [blessing] (שֶׁהִיא מַכֶּ״ה וּבְרָכָ״ה), which also equals eleven in Mispar katan [reduced numerical value], and it is called Adonai, (שֶׁעוֹלָה גַּם כֵּן י״א בְּמִסְפָּר קָטָן וְהִיא הַנִּקְרֵאת אֲדנ״י) which is Malkhut, and is called Kenesset Yisrael (שֶׁהִיא מַלְכוּת וְנִקְרֵאת כְּנֶסֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל). And it then said DI’AO DI’AO DI’AO three times, with the addition of Alef, (וְאָמַר אַחַר זֶה דִּיא״ו דִּיא״ו דִּיא״ו ג׳ פְּעָמִים בְּתוֹסֶפֶת א׳) which equals twelve in Mispar katan [reduced numerical value], to allude to the supernal Keter (שֶׁעוֹלֶה בְּמִסְפָּר קָטָן י״ב, לְרַמֵּז כֶּתֶר עֶלְיוֹן). And three times di’ao: one to allude to the name Ehyeh, (וְג׳ פְּעָמִים דִּיא״ו: הָאֶחָד לְרַמֵּז שֵׁם אֶהְיֶה) which equals twelve in Mispar katan [reduced numerical value], and it is Keter Elyon, (שֶׁעוֹלֶה בְּמִסְפָּר קָטָן י״ב וְהוּא כֶּתֶר עֶלְיוֹן) and two other times DI’AO DI’AO: one to allude to twelve Havayot, and one to allude to the twelve constellations (וּשְׁתֵּי פְּעָמִים אֲחֵרוֹת דִּיא״ו דִּיא״ו: הָאֶחָד לְרַמֵּז י״ב הוי״וֹת וְהָאֶחָד לְרַמֵּז לִי״ב מַזָּלוֹת).

Kenesset Yisrael said: You are toward us first (אָמְרָה כְּנֶסֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל: אַתְּ לְגַבַּן תְּחִלָּה). Like “my beloved”-DYV DYV,p1-3 (דּוֹמֶה ״דוֹדִי״ – דִּי״ו דִּי״ו) this first middah to us is diyyo, which equals eleven and hints at makkeh and berakhah (הַמִּדָּה הַזֹּאת הָרִאשׁוֹנָה אֵלֵינוּ הִיא דִּי״ו שֶׁעוֹלָה י״א וְרוֹמֶזֶת מַכֶּה וּבְרָכָה). The upper middah, which is DI’AO and equals twelve: pour forth Your influence from it upon our middah, (הַמִּדָּה הָעֶלְיוֹנָה שֶׁהִיא דִּיא״ו שֶׁעוֹלָה י״ב – תֵּן הַשְׁפָּעָתְךָ מִמֶּנָּה עַל מִדָּה שֶׁלָּנוּ) just as the deer skips and leaps swiftly, (כְּמוֹ שֶׁהַצְּבִי מְדַלֵּג וּמְקַפֵּץ מְהֵרָה) so too bestow upon us by means of Your ten middot without delay or hindrance (כָּךְ תַּשְׁפִּיעַ עָלֵינוּ בְּאֶמְצָעוּת עֶשֶׂר מִדּוֹתֶיךָ בְּלִי אִחוּר וְעִכּוּב). And therefore it mentioned ten (וְלָכֵן הִזְכִּיר עֶשֶׂר) places “from mountain to mountain,” etc., (מְקוֹמוֹת מֵהָר לְהָר וְגו׳) to make known to you that they correspond to the ten Sefirot (לְהוֹדִיעֲךָ שֶׁהֵם כְּנֶגֶד עֶשֶׂר סְפִירוֹת).

And know, (וּדְעָה) that in this middah, which is Malkhut, (כִּי בְּזֹאת הַמִּדָּה שֶׁהִיא מַלְכוּת) is the foundation of the dwelling of the Throne of Glory, (מְכוֹן שִׁבְתּוֹ שֶׁל כִּסֵּא הַכָּבוֹד) upon which Hashem sits in judgment (שֶׁיוֹשֵׁב בּוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ לְדִין). And from that place the Shekhinah does not depart, (וּמִמָּקוֹם הַהוּא לֹא זָזָה שְׁכִינָה) for from there it bestows upon the world (כִּי מִשָּׁם מַשְׁפִּיעַ לָעוֹלָם). And that which is written “from mountain to mountain” (ומה שֶׁכָּתוּב מֵהָר לְהָר) means: that the Shekhinah forever dwells within these ten Sefirot, (רוֹצֶה לוֹמַר: כִּי לְעוֹלָם הַשְּׁכִינָה שׁוֹרָה בָּעֶשֶׂר סְפִירוֹת הָאֵלּוּ) and never departs from them (וְאֵינָהּ יוֹצֵאת מִשָּׁם לְעוֹלָם).

This is what our Rabbis of blessed memory said: (זֶהוּ שֶׁאָמְרוּ רַבּוֹתֵינוּ ז״ל) the Shekhinah never descended below ten (לְעוֹלָם לֹא יָרְדָה שְׁכִינָה לְמַטָּה מֵעֲשָׂרָה -) that is, below these ten Sefirot (לְמַטָּה מֵאֵלּוּ עֶשֶׂר סְפִירוֹת). And when Hashem desires to bestow merit upon Yisrael, (וּכְשֶׁרוֹצֶה הקב״ה לְזַכּוֹת אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל) He bestows and oversees all nine Sefirot of His goodness (מַשְׁפִּיעַ וּמַשְׂגִּיחַ בְּכָל ט׳ סְפִירוֹת טוּבוֹ) upon the tenth Sefirah, which is Malkhut, (עַל הַסְּפִירָה הָעֲשִׂירִית שֶׁהִיא מַלְכוּת) to elevate Yisrael to a supreme stature, (לְהַעֲלוֹת אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּמַעֲלָה עֶלְיוֹנָה) and “He sat upon a high and exalted throne” (Isaiah 6:1), (וְ״יָשַׁב עַל כִּסֵּא רָם וְנִשָּׂא״) whose “train fills the Temple.” (אֲשֶׁר ״שׁוּלָיו מְלֵאִים אֶת הַהֵיכָל״).

What is “fills the Temple”? (מַאי ״מְלֵאִים אֶת הַהֵיכָל״) Meaning, that from there He shows countenance to Yisrael, (פֵּרוּשׁ: שֶׁמִּשָּׁם מוֹרֶה פָּנִים לְיִשְׂרָאֵל) and according to the preparation of their deeds, they attain influence (לְפִי הֲכָנַת מַעֲשֵׂיהֶם הֵם מַשִּׂיגִים הַהַשְׁפָּעָה). “And I saw Hashem”-Adonai is written- (וָאֶרְאֶה אֶת ה׳ ״אֲדנָי״ כְּתִיב) to declare that all who gaze and perceive the vision of prophecy, (לְהַגִּיד שֶׁכָּל הַחוֹזִים הַמַּשִּׂיגִים מַרְאֵה הַנְּבוּאָה) do so only from this middah, (מֵהַמִּדָּה הַזֹּאת לְבַד הִיא) even though from the higher middot above it stem the Divine forces (אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁבַּמִּדּוֹת הָעֶלְיוֹנוֹת מִמֶּנָּה הַכּוֹחוֹת אֱלוֹהִיּוֹת).

And when Yisrael do not perform the will of their Master, (וּכְשׁאֵין יִשְׂרָאֵל עוֹשִׂים רְצוֹנוֹ שֶׁל מָקוֹם) He does not bestow through this middah and does not sit upon the Throne of Glory that is there, (אֵינוֹ מַשְׁפִּיעַ בַּמִּדָּה הַזֹּאת וְאֵינוֹ יוֹשֵׁב עַל כִּסֵּא הַכָּבוֹד אֲשֶׁר שָׁם) but ascends above-to the supernal Keter, (אֶלָּא מַעֲלֶה מַעְלָה שֶׁהוּא כֶּתֶר עֶלְיוֹן) which is the name Ehyeh, which equals twelve as the number of DI’AO, (שֶׁהוּא שֵׁם אֶהְיֶה שֶׁעוֹלֶה י״ב כְּמִסְפַּר דִּיא״ו) and from there He gazes and watches over us (וּמִשָּׁם צוֹפֶה וּמַבִּיט אֵלֵינוּ) to see if we return in repentance from our sins and our evil ways (לִרְאוֹת אִם אָנוּ שָׁבִים בִּתְשׁוּבָה מֵעֲווֹנֵינוּ וּמִדַּרְכֵּנוּ הָרָעָה). And when we open with repentance, (וּכְשֶׁאָנוּ פּוֹתְחִין בִּתְשׁוּבָה) immediately His compassion is stirred upon us, (מִיָּד נִכְמָרִים רַחֲמָיו עָלֵינוּ) and He hastens to save us, (וּמְמַהֵר לְהַצִּילֵנוּ) just as the deer is swift to run more than all other creatures (כְּמוֹ שֶׁהַצְּבִי קַל לָרוּץ יוֹתֵר מִשְּׁאָר חַיּוֹת).

Therefore it is said: “My beloved is like a deer.” (לָכָךְ נֶאֱמַר: ״דּוֹמֶה דוֹדִי לְצְבִי״). That which the verse said, Behold, “this” (Zeh) (שֶׁאָמַר הַכָּתוּב ״הִנֵּה זֶה זֶה״) alludes to twelve, (רוֹמֵז י״ב) corresponding to Keter, which is Ehyeh (כְּנֶגֶד כֶּתֶר שֶׁהוּא אֶהְיֶה). And it said “behind our wall,” (וְאָמַר ״אַחַר כָּתְלֵנוּ״) corresponding to this middah, which is more hidden from us than the others (כְּנֶגֶד זוֹ הַמִּדָּה שֶׁהִיא נֶעְלֶמֶת מִמֶּנּוּ יוֹתֵר מֵהָאֲחֵרוֹת). “From the windows,” “from the lattice,” (״מִן הַחַלּוֹנוֹת״, ״מִן הַחֲרַכִּים״) allude to the three Patriarchs, (רֶמֶז לִג׳ אָבוֹת) each of whom is influenced by three Sefirot, (שֶׁהֵם מֻשְׁפָעִים כָּל אֶחָד מִג׳ סְפִירוֹת) and the tenth is Keter, into which all enter, (וְהָעֲשִׂירִית הִיא הַכֶּתֶר שֶׁכֻּלָּן נִכְנָסִים בָּהּ) even though it belongs to Ya'akov (אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁהִיא שֶׁל יַעֲקֹב). “Standing behind our wall, watching from the windows, peering from the lattice”- (״עוֹמֵד אַחַר כָּתְלֵנוּ מַשְׁגִּיחַ מִן הַחַלּוֹנוֹת מֵצִיץ מִן הַחֲרַכִּים״) this is an allusion to the Sefirot, (רֶמֶז לַסְּפִירוֹת) and it said: “Standing,” “Watching,” “Peering”-corresponding to the three Patriarchs, as I said (וְאָמַר: ״עוֹמֵד״, ״מַשְׁגִּיחַ״, ״מֵצִיץ״ כְּנֶגֶד שְׁלוֹשָׁה אָבוֹת כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמַרְתִּי) until it reaches the Throne of Glory (עַד שֶׁמַּגִּיעַ לְכִסֵּא הַכָּבוֹד).

For as long as the Shekhinah sits upon the Throne, (שֶׁכָּל זְמַן שֶׁהַשְּׁכִינָה יוֹשֶׁבֶת בַּכִּסֵּא) it is exalted and lifted high, (הוּא רָם וְנִשָּׂא) and at that time the level of Yisrael is uplifted and elevated (וּבַזְּמַן הַהוּא נִתְנַשֵּׂא וְנִתְעַלֶּה מַדְרֵגָתוֹ שֶׁל יִשְׂרָאֵל). And when the Shekhinah is in this exalted and lofty Throne, (וּכְשֶׁהַשְּׁכִינָה בַּכִּסֵּא הַזֶּה הָרָם וְהַנִּשָּׂא) in the place from which it watches and bestows to all, (מִן הַמָּקוֹם שֶׁהוּא מַשְׁגִּיחַ וּמַשְׁפִּיעַ לַכֹּל) “and Yisrael accomplishes might.” (״וְיִשְׂרָאֵל עוֹשֶׂה חַיִל״).

Notes

  1. “Diyyo,” as derived in this Midrash from the word “Dodi [my beloved],” (״דַּיּוֹ״, שֶׁנִּגְזְרָה בַּמִּדְרָשׁ זֶה מִן הַמִּלָּה ״דוֹדִי״) is a sigh of love, according to the Jastrow Dictionary, (הִיא אֲנַחַת אַהֲבָה עַל פִּי מִלּוֹן Jastrow) and according to the author of Mattanot Kehunah on Midrash Rabbah, (וְעַל פִּי בַּעַל ״מַתָּנוֹת כְּהֻנָּה״ עַל מִדְרָשׁ רַבָּה) “Diyyo” is a name of Hashem in a foreign tongue (״דִּיאוֹ״ הוּא שֵׁם ה׳ בְּלַעַז) (he did not specify in which language) (הוּא לֹא פֵּרֵט בְּאֵיזוֹ שָׂפָה). The root appears in many languages, such as Deus in Latin, Dieu in French, Dio in Italian The plain meaning of the Midrash is that Kenesset Yisrael notes (פְּשַׁט הַמִּדְרָשׁ הוּא שֶׁכְּנֶסֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל מְצַיֶּנֶת) that Hashem expresses His love for her even before she expresses her love for Him, (שֶׁהקב״ה מְבַטֵּא אֶת אַהֲבָתוֹ אֵלֶיהָ עוֹד לִפְנֵי שֶׁהִיא מְבַטֵּאת אֶת אַהֲבָתָהּ אֵלָיו) and Rasham interprets the Midrash (וְרַש״ם מְפָרֵשׁ אֶת הַמִּדְרָשׁ) in the mode of symbolic representation (עַל דֶּרֶךְ הַמוּד).
