The Fourth Firmament

הָרָקִיעַ הָרְבִיעִי

And the fourth firmament is stretched with a storm wind (וְהָרָקִיעַ הָרְבִיעִי נָטוּי בְּרוּחַ סְעָרָה), and it stands upon pillars of fire (וְעוֹמֵד עַל עַמּוּדֵי אֵשׁ), and it is borne on crowns of flame (וְנִשָּׂא בִּכְתָרֵי שַלְהֶבֶת), and it is filled with treasuries of might (וּמָלֵא גִּנְזֵי גְּבוּרָה), also treasuries of dew (גַּם אוֹצְרוֹת טַלָּלִים), and angels of swiftness rush throughout all its corners (וּמַלְאָכִים קַלִּים בְּכָל פִּנּוֹתָיו מִתְרוֹצְצִים דְּהָרוֹת דְּהָרוֹת).

And within it are seven rivers of fire and water (וּבוֹ ז׳ נְהָרוֹת אֵשׁ וּמַיִם), and upon them stand angels from this side and that, without number (וְעֲלֵיהֶם עוֹמְדִים מַלְאָכִים מִזֶּה וּמִזֶּה לְאֵין מִסְפָּר).

From this side are angels of burning fire like flame (מִזֶּה מַלְאֲכֵי אֵשׁ בּוֹעֶרֶת כַּשַּׁלְהֶבֶת), and from that side are angels of cold surrounded by hail (וּמִזֶּה מַלְאֲכֵי קֹר מֻקָּפִין בָּרָד), and these do not extinguish those, and those do not ignite these (לֹא אֵלֶּה מְכַבִּין אֶת אֵלֶּה וְלֹא אֵלֶּה מַלְהִיטִין אֶת אֵלֶּה).

These immerse in rivers of fire (אֵלּוּ טוֹבְלִים בְּנְהָרוֹת אֵשׁ), and those immerse in rivers of water (וְאֵלּוּ טוֹבְלִים בְּנְהָרוֹת מַיִם), and they answer and say songs and praises to the Living One of worlds (וְעוֹנִים וְאוֹמְרִים שִׁירוֹת וּתְשֻׁבָּחוֹת לְחֵי הָעוֹלָמִים), for He formed them for the splendor of His strength (כִּי יִצְרָם לְהַדַּר חֶסְנוֹ).

And within it is a firmament of the canopy of the sun, full of light and all of it fire (וּבוֹ רָקִיעַ נְוֵי חוּפַת שֶׁמֶשׁ מְלֵאָה אוֹר וְכֻלָּהּ אֵשׁ), and the angels of fire girded in strength surround it (וּמַלְאֲכֵי הָאֵשׁ אֲזוּרִים גְּבוּרָה סְבוּבִים לוֹ), and they conduct it by day (וּמְנַהֲגִים אוֹתוֹ בַּיּוֹם).

And also angels of water, whose bodies are like the sea (וְעוֹד מַלְאֲכֵי מַיִם גּוּיָּתָם כַּיָּם), and their voice is like the sound of mighty waters (וְקוֹלָם כְּקוֹל מַיִם אֲמֻצִים), in the splendor of strength they conduct it by night (בְּפְאֵר עֹז וּמְנַהֲגִים אוֹתוֹ בַלַּיְלָה).

These are the names of the angels who conduct it by day (אֵלֶּה שְׁמוֹת הַמַּלְאָכִים הַמְנַהֲגִים אוֹתוֹ בַּיּוֹם): Abrasaks (אַבְרָאסַכְּס), Marmar’ot (מַרְמַרְאוֹת), Mukhti’el (מוּכְתִיאֵל), Marit (מָאָרִית), Tzidki’el (צִדְקִיאֵל), Yachasi (יַחֲסִי), Chasi’el (חֲסִיאֵל), Rava’el (רַבָּאֵל), Yaavukh (יָאָבוּךְ), Mi’el (מִיאֵל), Karimkha (כָּרִימְכָא), Marman (מַרְמָאן), Fu’el (פוּאֵל), Gavri’el (גַּבְרִיאֵל), Ashton (אַשְׁתוֹן), Tokfi’el (תוֹקְפִיאֵל), Eli’el (אֵלִיאֵל), Nafli (נַפְלִי), U’el (אוּאֵל), Kodshi’el (קוֹדְשִׁיאֵל), Hodi’el (הוֹדִיאֵל), Neromi’el (נְרוֹמִיאֵל), Yirshi’el (יִרְשִׁיאֵל), Malki’el (מַלְכִיאֵל), Agriṭa’el (אַגְרִיתָאֵל), Lehagi’el (לְהַגִּיאֵל), Menori’el (מְנוֹרִיאֵל), Pela’u’el (פֶּלָאוּאֵל), Nuri’el (נוּרִיאֵל), Harma’i’el (הַרְמָאִיאֵל), Nesvari’el (נֶסְבָּרִיאֵל).

These are the princes of the camps who guide the sun by day (אֵלֶּה הֵם שָׂרֵי הַמַּחֲנוֹת הַמְנַהֲגִים אֶת הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ בַּיּוֹם), and these are the names of the angels who guide it at night (וְאֵלֶּה שְׁמוֹת הַמַּלְאָכִים הַמְנַהֲגִים אוֹתוֹ בַלַּיְלָה):

Parsiy’el (פַּרְסִיאֵל), Tzartzi’el (צַרְצִיאֵל), Agi’el (עֲגִיאֵל), Nevim’al (נְבִימְאָל), Ami’el (עַמִּיאֵל), Yisri’el (יִשְׂרִיאֵל), Ishma’u’el (יִשְׁמָעוּאֵל), Shefati’el (שְׁפַטִיאֵל), Sha’u’el (שָׁאוּאֵל), Radr’i’el (רַדְרִיאֵל), Sha’asi’el (שַׁעְשִׂיאֵל), Libav’el (לִיבַבְאֵל), Banri’el (בַּנְרִיאֵל), Tzagr’i’el (צַגְרִיאֵל), Mena’el (מְנָהֵאל), Lemi’el (לְמִיאֵל), Piri’el (פִּרִיאֵל), Peda’el (פְּדָהֵאל), Libra’el (לִיבְרָאֵל), Rivtza’el (רִבְצָאֵל), Chamki’el (חַמְקִיאֵל), Bega’i’el (בְּגָהִיאֵל), Navri’el (נַבְרִיאֵל), Katzfi’el (קַצְפִיאֵל), Raadni’el (רַעַדְנִיאֵל), Chatni’el (חַתְנִיאֵל), Asafafi’el (אַסְפַּפִיאֵל), Chalv’el (חַלְווּאֵל), Shma’i’el (שְׁמָאִיאֵל), Zakhzach’el (זַחְזַחְאֵל), Nechvari’el (נֶכְבָּרִיאֵל), Paza’el (פַּצָאֵל), Kamni’el (קַמְנִיאֵל), Zeha’el (זֶהָאֵל), Chadi’el (חֲדִיאֵל). These are the princes of the camps who guide it at night (אֵלֶּה הֵם שָׂרֵי הַמַּחֲנוֹת הַמְנַהֲגִים אוֹתוֹ בַלַּיְלָה).

If you seek to see the sun by day seated in its chariot as it rises (אִם בִּקַּשְׁתָּה לִרְאוֹת אֶת הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ בַּיּוֹם יוֹשֵׁב בַּמֶּרְכָּבָה וְעוֹלֶה), beware and guard yourself and purify seven days (הִשָּׁמֵר וְהִזָּהֵר וְהִטָּהֵר שִׁבְעָה יָמִים) from all food and all drink and every impure thing (מִכָּל מַאֲכָל וּמִכָּל מַשְׁקֶה וּמִכָּל דָּבָר טֻמְאָה), and on the seventh day stand facing it at the time it rises (וּבַיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי עֲמוֹד כְּנֶגְדּוֹ בַּשָּׁעָה שֶׁעוֹלֶה), and burn before it incense of spices weighing three shekels (וְהַעֲשֵׁן לְפָנָיו קְטֹרֶת בְּשָׂמִים מִשְׁקַל שְׁלֹשָׁה שְׁקָלִים), and adjure the names of the angels who guide it by day seven times (וֶהֱיֵה מַשְׁבִּיעַ שְׁמוֹת הַמַּלְאָכִים הַמְנַהֲגִים אוֹתוֹ בַּיּוֹם שֶׁבַע פְּעָמִים), and if you are not answered in those seven times (וְאִם לֹא נַעֲנֵיתָ בָּאֵלֶּה שֶׁבַע פְּעָמִים), return and adjure them in reverse seven times (שׁוּב וְהַשְׁבִּיעֵם לְמִפְרָע שֶׁבַע פְּעָמִים), and say: I adjure you, angels who guide the sun (וֶאֱמוֹר: מַשְׁבִּיעַ אֲנִי עֲלֵיכֶם מַלְאֲכִים הַמְנַהֲגִים אֶת הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ), by the power of your might (בְּכֹחַ גְּבוּרַתְכֶם), in the paths of the firmament (בִּמְסִלּוֹת רָקִיעַ) to light the world (לְהָאִיר עוֹלָם), by Him whose voice shakes the earth (בְּמִי שֶׁקוֹלוֹ מְרַעֵשׁ אֶת הָאָרֶץ), and moves mountains in His wrath (וּמַעֲתִיק הָרִים בְּאַפּוֹ), and calms the sea by His power (וּמַרְגִּיעַ הַיָּם בִּכְחוֹ), and causes the pillars of the world to tremble with His glance (וּמְמוֹטֵט עַמּוּדֵי עוֹלָם בְּמַבָּטוֹ), and bears all things by His arm (וְנוֹשֵׂא הַכֹּל בִּזְרוֹעוֹ), and is hidden from the eyes of all living (וְנֶעְלָם מֵעֵינֵי כָּל חָי), and is seated upon the throne of the greatness of the kingship of His glorious holiness (וְיוֹשֵׁב עַל כִּסֵּא גְּדוּלַּת מַלְכוּת כְּבוֹד קָדְשׁוֹ), and roams the whole world (וּמְשׁוֹטֵט בְּכָל הָעוֹלָם):

by His great and awesome and mighty and exalted and valiant and strong and holy and powerful and wondrous and hidden and lofty and radiant Name (בִּשְׁמוֹ הַגָּדוֹל וְהַנּוֹרָא וְהָאָמִיץ וְהָאַדִּיר וְהָעָזוּז וְהַגִּבּוֹר וְהַקָּדוֹשׁ וְהֶחָזָק וְהַנִּפְלָא וְהַנִּסְתָּר וְהַנִּשָּׂא וְהַנָּאוֹר) I mention and adjure you (מַזְכִּיר וּמַשְׁבִּיעַ אֲנִי עֲלֵיכֶם), that you fulfill my will and request at this time and season (שֶׁתַּעֲשׂוּ רְצוֹנִי וּבַקָּשָׁתִי בָּעֵת וּבַעֲשָׁנָה הַזֹּאת), and remove the channel of the sun (וְתָסִירוּ צִנּוֹר הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ), and I shall see it face to face in its canopy (וְאֶרְאֶנּוּ פָּנִים בְּפָנִים כְּשֶׁהוּא בְּחֻפָּתוֹ), and I shall not be consumed by your fire (וְאַל אֶתְלַהֵט מֵאִשְׁכֶם), and grant it permission to fulfill my desire (וּתְנוּ לוֹ רְשׁוּת לַעֲשׂוֹת רְצוֹנִי). And when you complete the adjuration (וּכְכַלּוֹתְךָ לְהַשְׁבִּיעַ), you shall see it in its canopy (תִּרְאֵהוּ בְּחֻפָּתוֹ), and ask it: whether for death or for life, for good or for evil (וְתִשְׁאַל אוֹתוֹ אִם לְמָוֶת אִם לְחַיִּים אִם לְטוֹב אִם לְרָע).

And if you seek to release it (וְאִם בִּקַּשְׁתָּה לְהַתִּירוֹ), recall the adjuration and say (תַּזְכִּיר אֶת הַשְּׁבוּעָה וֶאֱמוֹר): I adjure you, that you return the channel of the sun to its place as at first (מַשְׁבִּיעַ אֲנִי עֲלֵיכֶם שֶׁתַּחְזִירוּ אֶת צִנּוֹר הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ לִמְקוֹמוֹ כַּבַּתְּחִלָּה), and let the sun go on its way (וְיֵלֵךְ הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ לְדַרְכּוֹ).

If you seek to see the sun at night (וְאִם בִּקַּשְׁתָּ לִרְאוֹת אֶת הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ בַּלַּיְלָה), going in the northern wind (הוֹלֵךְ בְּרוּחַ צְפוֹנִית), purify yourself three weeks (הִטָּהֵר שְׁלוֹשָׁה שָׁבוּעוֹת) from all food and drink and from every impure thing (מִכָּל מַאֲכָל וּמִשְׁתֶּה וּמִכָּל דָּבָר טֻמְאָה), and stand at the night’s watch at the third hour (וַעֲמוֹד בְּאַשְׁמוּרֶת הַלַּיְלָה בִּשְׁלֹשׁ שָׁעוֹת), and be wrapped in white garments (וֶהֱיֵה עָטוּף בִּגְדֵי לָבָן), and speak the name of the sun (וְדַבֵּר אֶת שֵׁם הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ), and the names of the angels who guide it by night twenty-one times (וְאֶת שְׁמוֹת הַמַּלְאָכִים הַמְנַהֲגִים אוֹתוֹ בַלַּיְלָה עֶשְׂרִים וְאַחַת פְּעָמִים), and say: I adjure you, angels flying in the firmament’s air (וֶאֱמוֹר מַשְׁבִּיעַ אֲנִי עֲלֵיכֶם הַמַּלְאָכִים הַמְעוֹפְפִים בְּאֲוִיר הָרָקִיעַ), by He who sees and is not seen (בְּמִי שֶׁהוּא רוֹאֶה וְאֵינוֹ נִרְאֶה), by the King who reveals all secrets (בַּמֶּלֶךְ הַמְגַלֶּה כָּל תַּעֲלוּמוֹת), and sees all hidden things (וְרוֹאֶה כָּל נִסְתָּרוֹת), by the Mighty One who knows what is in darkness (בָּאֵל הַיּוֹדֵעַ מַה בַּמַּחְשַׁכִּים), and who turns shadow to morning (וְהוּא הוֹפֵךְ צַלְמָוֶת לַבֹּקֶר), and gives light to night as day (וְהוּא מֵאִיר לַיְלָה כַּיּוֹם), and before whom all secrets are revealed like the sun (וְכָל נִסְתָּרוֹת לְפָנָיו גְּלוּיוֹרוֹז כַּשֶּׁמֶשׁ), and from whom no thing is hidden (וְלֹא יִפָּלֵא מִמֶּנּוּ כָּל דָּבָר), by the name of the Holy King (בְּשֵׁם הַמֶּלֶךְ הַקָּדוֹשׁ), who rides upon the wings of the wind (הַמְהַלֵּךְ עַל כַּנְפֵי רוּחַ), by the letters of the Ineffable Name revealed to man in Eden (בְּאוֹתִיּוֹת הַשֵּׁם הַמְּפֹרָשׁ הַנִּגְלֶה לְאָדָם בְּגַן עֵדֶן), the ruler of constellations before whom sun and moon bow like servants to their master (הַמּוֹשֵׁל בַּמַּזָּלוֹת וְהַשֶּׁמֶשׁ וְהַיָּרֵחַ מִשְׁתַּחֲוִים לְפָנָיו כַּעֲבָדִים לַאֲדוֹנֵיהֶם), by the wondrous God (בְּשֵׁם הָאֵל הַנִּפְלָא), I have adjured you (הִשְׁבַּעְתִּי אֶתְכֶם), that you show me this great miracle that I seek (שֶׁתּוֹדִיעוּנִי הַנֵּס הַגָּדוֹל הַזֶּה שֶׁאֲנִי מְבַקֵּשׁ), and I shall see the sun in its might (וְאֶרְאֶה אֶת הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ בִּגְבוּרָתוֹ), in the form of its chariots (בְּאֹפֶן מֶרְכְּבוֹתָיו), and no secret shall be hidden from me (וְלֹא יִפָּלֵא מִמֶּנִּי דָּבָר מִתַּעֲלוּמוֹת), and I shall see it as on a perfect day (וְאֶרְאֶנּוּ כַּיּוֹם תָּמִים), and I shall ask of it my desire (וְאֶשְׁאַל מִמֶּנּוּ חֶפְצִי), and it shall speak with me as a man speaks with his friend (וְיְדַבֵּר עִמִּי כְּמוֹ שֶׁיְּדַבֵּר אִישׁ עִם רֵעֵהוּ), and it shall tell me the mysteries of the depths (וְיַגֵּד לִי רָזֵי הָעֲמֻקוֹת), and reveal to me hidden things (וְיוֹדִיעֵנִי תַּעֲלוּמוֹת), and no evil shall befall me (וְאַל יִפְגַּע בִּי דָּבָר רָע).

And when you finish speaking (וּכְכַלּוֹתְךָ לְדַבֵּר), you shall hear a thunderclap from the north (תִּשְׁמַע קוֹל רַעַם מֵעֵבֶר הַצָּפוֹן), and see lightning emerge (וְתִרְאֶה כְּבָרָק יוֹצֵא), and the earth will flash before you (וְתִבְהַק הָאָרֶץ לְפָנֶיךָ). And after you see thus, bow and fall upon your face to the ground (וְאַחַר שֶׁתִּרְאֵהוּ כֵּן הִשְׁתַּחֲוֵה וּתְפֹל עַל פָּנֶיךָ אָרְצָה), and pray this prayer (וְהִתְפַלֵּל אֶת הַתְּפִלָּה הַזֹּאת):

Abtzavi (אַבְּצַבִי), Antoliphon (אַנְתוֹלִיפוֹן), Helios (הֵילִיוֹס), Natos (נָאטוֹס), Agdor (אַגְדוֹר), Epistos (אֶפִּיסְטוֹס), Akt (אַקְט), Koriphos (קוֹרִיפוֹס), Eiophistos (אֵיאוֹפִיסְטוֹס), Hazpalah (הַזְפָּלָה), Trokhus (טְרוֹכוּס), Ovinos (אוֹבִינוֹס), Katasites (קַאטָאסִיטֵס), Kazmontes (קַזְמוֹנְטֵס), Sagimos (סַגִּימוֹס), Pili (פִּילִי), Pantor (פַּאנְטוֹר), Kiri (קִירִי), Pomaos (פּוֹמָאוֹס), Eiophotos (אֵיאוֹפוֹטוֹס), Tirionos (תִּירִיוֹנוֹס), Astratiotos (אַסְטְרַטִיוֹטוֹס).

I, So-and-so son of So-and-so, cast my plea before you (מַפִּיל אֲנִי פְּלוֹנִי בֶּן פְּלוֹנִי תְּחִנָּתִי לְפָנֶיךָ), that you appear to me without fear (שֶׁתֵּרָאֶה לִי בְּלִי פַּחַד), and reveal yourself to me without dread (וְתִגָּלֶה לִי בְּלִי אֵימָה), and hide nothing from me (וְלֹא תְכַחֵד מִמֶּנִּי כָּל דָּבָר), and tell me truly all I seek (וְתַגֵּד לִי בֶאֱמֶת כָּל שֶׁאֲנִי מְבַקֵּשׁ). And stand on your feet and you will see it (וְעֲמוֹד עַל רַגְלֶיךָ וְתִרְאֵהוּ) in the northern wind going eastward (בְּרוּחַ צְפוֹנִית הוֹלֵךְ לַמִּזְרָח).

And afterward turn your hands behind you (וְאַחַר כָּךְ הָפֵךְ יָדֶיךָ לַאֲחוֹרֶיךָ), and lower your head (וְהַנֵּעַ רֹאשְׁךָ לְמַטָּה), and ask every matter you desire (וְשָׁאַל כָּל דָּבָר שֶׁתַּחְפֹּץ).

And after you question it, lift your eyes to heaven (וְאַחַר שֶׁתִּשְׁאָלֵהוּ שָׂא עֵינֶיךָ הַשָּׁמַיִם), and say: Orfeli’el, Orfeli’el (וֶאֱמוֹר: אוֹרְפְּלִיאֵל אוֹרְפְּלִיאֵל), I adjure you by He who formed you for His glory and majesty (מַשְׁבִּיעַ אֲנִי עָלֶיךָ בְּמִי שֶׁיְּצָרְךָ לְהוֹדוֹ וּלְהַדְרוֹ), to shine in His world (לְהָאִיר עוֹלָמוֹ), and gave you dominion by day (וְנָתַן לְךָ מֶמְשָׁלָה בַּיּוֹם), that you do not harm me (שֶׁלֹּא תַּזִּיקֵנִי), nor frighten me (וְלֹא תְפַחֵדֵנִי), and I shall not fear or tremble (וְלֹא אֵירָא וְלֹא אֶרְעָד), and turn to your path in peace (וּפְנֵה לְדַרְכְּךָ לְשָׁלוֹם), and I release you (וַאֲתִירְךָ), and you shall not delay to go (וְלֹא תִּתְעַכֵּב לָלֶכֶת), from now and forevermore (מֵעַתָּה וְעַד עוֹלָם).
