“And the earth was without form and void (tohu va’vohu)”—remnant of prior worlds, destroyed in the beginning and not established “Was”—already, and afterward it was established By forty-two letters the world was engraved and established All are crown of the holy Name; when joined, letters ascend above and descend below, crowned in four directions, and the world can stand They stand in the works of the world Form of a seal—these are found within, as a signet imprint (טוּפְסְרָא דְּקִילְטָא... Entered and went out, Et, and Ve’Et, and the world was created Entered into the seal, joined, and the world was established

By blows of the great serpent they were smitten, and sank beneath the dust a thousand and five hundred cubits Afterward the great deep rose in darkness, and darkness covered all Until light came forth, split the darkness, went out and shone, as it is written: “He reveals deep things from darkness, and brings out to light the shadow of death” (Job 12)

The waters were weighed in the balance, one thousand five hundred by the fingers Three drops in the scale, half for existence, half descending below These ascend and these descend When they ascended with the rising of the hand, the scale stood straight, not swerving right or left As it is written: “Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand” (Isaiah 40) All was within the earth, sealed, unrevealed Force and might, waters frozen within, not flowing, not spreading Until the light above shone on it, the light struck its channels, released its power As it is written: “And God said: Let there be light, and there was light” (Bereshit 1)

This is the primordial supernal light, that existed before all From here went out all forces and powers The earth was perfumed and later brought forth her forces When it shone, the light extended from one end of the world to the other

But when it saw the wicked of the world, it was hidden and concealed, and comes forth only in hidden paths unrevealed “And God saw the light, that it was good” (Bereshit 1) We learned: every dream fulfilled with “that it was good” is peace above and below He saw the letters according to their ways, each one He saw Tet, good for him, good for his dream For the Orayta opens with “that it was good” (דְּהָא אוֹרַיְיתָא פָּתַח בֵּיהּ כִּי טוֹב). Light shone from end to end of the world—Tet, good Good it is: goodness shining in perfection

Tet is the ninth of all, letter illumined from above, first point, included in it, formed in the concealment of the point, secret of Yod, one point (ט' תְּשִׁיעָאָה דְּכֹלָּא. Vav from its power went forth, in it were made heavens (ו' מֵחֵילֵיהּ נָפִיק. When it ended in one point and was concealed in it, Bet shone; from it went forth upper and lower—upper hidden, lower revealed, secret of two, established in supernal power And this is “Tov.” These three letters, Tet-Vav-Bet, are joined later in the Tzaddik of the world, who includes all, above and below As it is said: “Say of the righteous, that it is good” (Isaiah 3) For supernal light is included in him, as it is written: “Hashem is good to all, and His mercies are over all His works” (Psalms 145) “To all”—written simply, for illuminating one day that shines to all, the supernal above all Until here, the concealment of the words Completion from the omissions (section twenty-seven)

Why is the Bet like a man formed in wisdom—closed on all sides and open in front? And the Alef is open behind—to say that it is open to receive from Keter, and has an opening to bestow to others Until here, from the omissions

“Bereshit bara Elohim”—secret of “Reshit”: “Of the first of your dough you shall give a portion” (Numbers 15) This is supernal Chokhmah, which is Reshit Bet is the house of the world, to be watered from that river that enters it This is the secret of what is written: “And a river went out of Eden to water the garden” (Bereshit 2) A river that gathers all from the supernal depth, whose waters never cease, to water the garden

That supernal depth is the first house, Bereshit The letters ended in it, in one fine hidden path within it From that depth came forth two forces, as it is written: “Et haShamayim” (וּמִגּוֹ הַהוּא עוּמְקָא נָפְקוּ תְּרֵין חֵילִין דִּכְתִיב אֶת הַשָּׁמַיִם). It is not written “Shamayim,” but “haShamayim”—from that depth hidden from all “And Et haAretz”—that concealment brought forth this earth
