We have learned: Orayta, in what is it found White fire, and black fire above white fire In two fires Orayta is found Come and see (תָּא חֲזֵי), one fire it is (אֶשָּׁא חֲדָא הוּא), and this is divided into four (וְהַאי אִתְפְּלִג לְאַרְבָּעָה). One water it is (מַיָּא חֲדָא אִיהוּ), and this is divided into four (וְהַאי אִתְפְּלִיג לְאַרְבַּע). One spirit it is (רוּחָא חֲדָא אִיהוּ), and this is divided into four (וְהַאי אִתְפְּלִיג לְאַרְבַּע).

Three heads were found - some say: joined - in these hosts Their number: the first head, sixty-two thousand and seven hundred The second head, forty-one thousand and five hundred The third head, fifty-three thousand and four hundred Aside from all those other ranks spread out on their sides (בַּר כָּל אִינּוּן דַּרְגִּין אַחֲרָנִין דְּאִתְפָּרְשָׁן בְּסִטְרַיְיהוּ), and they have no reckoning (וְלֵית לוֹן חוּשְׁבָּנָא). All ranks upon ranks Aside from many legions of destructive spirits below (בַּר כַּמָה גַּרְדִּינֵי נִמוּסִין דְּאִינּוּן לְתַתָּא), brazen as dogs, biting like donkeys (חֲצִיפִין כְּכַלְבָּא, נַשְׁכִין כְּחַמָּרָא). Woe to one found among them (וַוי מַאן דְּאִשְׁתְּכַח גַּבַּיְיהוּ), and their judgment is in the fourth side (וְדִינָא דִּלְהוֹן בְּסִטְרָא רְבִיעָאָה).

The fourth banner (דִּגְלָא רְבִיעָאָה): Adam (אָדָ״ם), Raphael (רְפָאֵ״ל). West (מַעֲרָב). With him healing (בַּהֲדֵיהּ אַסְוָותָא). On the side of Adam is included supernal judgment, upon him healing rests This one - some say: one - grasps the horns of the ox (הַאי, ס״א חַד, אָחִיד בְּקַרְנוֹי דְּשׁוֹר), when it is desired to raise them to the great deep (כַּד מִבָּעֵי לְאַעֲלָא לוֹן לִתְהוֹמָא רַבָּא). And he subdues them, so that they not ignite the world After this there rests a sound of thin silence, judgment Some say: here, a word in secrecy, a word of speech not heard at all

On this side, one rests who rests, one ascends who ascends The sun is gathered to flow to this place Because of this, “And you shall sound a teru‘ah” (בְּגִין כַּךְ וּתְקַעְתֶּם תְּרוּעָה) (Numbers 10), in the south side (בִּסְטַר דָּרוֹם). But here, not this and not that Why teru‘ah (אֲמַאי תְּרוּעָה). To subdue the north side And because of this, the north side goes backward

Come and see (תָּא חֲזֵי), two trumpets (שְׁתֵּי חֲצוֹצְרוֹת), because they are from the sides of the two that we said, from the east and from the south (בְּגִין דְּאִינּוּן מִסִּטְרֵי תְּרֵי דְּקָאַמְרֵי, מִמִּזְרָח וּמִדָּרוֹם). They are prepared to break judgments and to subdue them And because of this they are of silver

And for this reason, “And on your days of joy and on your festivals etc., you shall blow with the trumpets” (וּבְגִין כָּךְ וּבְיוֹם שִׂמְחַתְכֶם וּבְמוֹעֲדֵיכֶם וְגוֹ׳, וּתְקַעְתֶּם בַּחֲצוֹצְרוֹת), simply (סְתָם), whether above or below (בֵּין לְעֵילָּא בֵּין לְתַתָּא). Happy are Yisrael (זַכָּאִין אִינּוּן יִשְׂרָאֵל), for Kudsha Berikh Hu desires their glory (דְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא בָּעֵי בִּיקָרֵיהוֹן), and gave them a supernal portion over all the other nations (וְיָהִיב לוֹן חוּלָקָא עִלָּאָה עַל כָּל שְׁאַר עַמִּין). And Kudsha Berikh Hu is praised in them with their praises (וְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא אִשְׁתְּבַּח בְּהוּ בְּתוּשְׁבַּחְתַּיְיהוּ), this is what is written (הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב): “And He said to me, you are My servant, Yisrael, in whom I will be glorified” (וַיֹּאמֶר לִי עַבְדִּי אָתָּה יִשְׂרָאֵל וְגוֹ׳) (Isaiah 49). “And it was, when the Ark set forward, Moshe said etc.”

Rabbi El'azar said (רִבִּי אֶלְעָזָר אָמַר), here there is to observe, the Nun which - some say: from its seed - turns backwards (הָכָא אִית לְאִסְתַּכְּלָא, נ׳ דְּאִיהִי, ס״א מְנוֹזְרָא, מְחַזְרָא לַאֲחוֹרָא), here in two places, why (הָכָא בִּתְרֵי דּוּכְתֵּי, אֲמַאי). And if you say it is a bent Nun (וְאִי תֵּימָא נ׳ כְּפוּפָה), behold it is known, the bent Nun is female (הָא יְדִיעָה נ׳ כְּפוּפָה נוּקְבָּא). The straight Nun is the generality of male and female And this we have already established in this place: “And it was, when the Ark set forward” (וְהָא אוֹקִימְנָא בַּאֲתָר דָּא, וַיְהִי בִּנְסוֹעַ הָאָרוֹן). Why then was it turned backwards in this manner

Come and see (תָּא חֲזֵי): the letter Nun is not said in Ashrei yoshvei veitekha [Happy are those who dwell in Your house] (נ בְּאַשְׁרֵי יוֹשְׁבֵי בֵיתֶךָ לָא אִתְּמַר), because she is in exile (בְּגִין דְּהִיא בְּגָלוּתָא). And behold, the Companions have already established it (וְהָא אוּקְמוּהָ חַבְרַיָּיא), as it is written: “She has fallen; she shall no more rise, the virgin of Yisrael, etc.” (Amos 5). Rather, what is written above? “And the Ark of the Covenant of Hashem went before them, a three days’ journey, to search out a resting place for them” (וַאֲרוֹן בְּרִית יְיָ נוֹסֵעַ לִפְנֵיהֶם דֶּרֶךְ שְׁלֹשֶׁת יָמִים לָתוּר לָהֶם מְנוּחָה) (Numbers 10). When the Ark was carried (כֵּיוָן דְּהֲוָה נָטִיל אֲרוֹנָא), Nun was carried upon it (נוּ״ן נָטִיל עָלֵיהּ), [some say: with it] (נ״א עִמֵּיהּ), and behold, the Shekhinta was seated above the Ark (וְהָא שְׁכִינְתָּא עַל גַּבֵּי אֲרוֹנָא יְתִיב).

Come and see (תָּא חֲזֵי), the belovedness of Kudsha Berikh Hu toward Yisrael (חֲבִיבוּתָא דְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לְגַבַּיְיהוּ דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל). For even though they are the Satan, straying from the straight path Kudsha Berikh Hu does not desire to abandon them And at all times He turns His face toward them (וּבְכָל זִמְנָא אַהְדָּר אַנְפּוֹי לָקֳבְלַיְיהוּ), for if not, they would not endure in the world (דְּאִי לָאו הָכִי לָא יְקוּמוּן בְּעָלְמָא).

Come and see (תָּא חֲזֵי), the Ark would take before them a journey of three days (אֲרוֹנָא הֲוָה נָטַל קַמַּיְיהוּ אֹרֵחַ תְּלָתָא יוֹמִין), the Nun was not separated from it (נ לָא הֲוָה מִתְפְּרַשׁ מִנֵּיהּ), and was taken with it (וְנָטִיל עִמֵּיהּ). And because of the love of Yisrael He turned His face and gazed from above the Ark (אַהְדָּר אַנְפּוֹי וְאִסְתְּחַר מִלְּגַבֵּי אֲרוֹנָא), like the ram that goes (כְּהַאי אַיָּילָא דְּעָזַלְתָּא), when it goes, it turns its face back to the place it came from (כַּד אִיהוּ אָזִיל, אַהְדָּר אַפּוֹי לַאֲתָר דְּנָפִיק). And because of this, “when the Ark set forward” (וְעַל דָּא בִּנְסוֹעַ הָאָרוֹן), the Nun turned its face toward Yisrael (נוּ״ן אַסְחַר אַנְפִּין לָקֳבְלַיְיהוּ דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל), and the shoulders of the body toward the Ark (וְכַתְפֵי גּוּפָא לְגַבֵּי אֲרוֹנָא). And because of this, when the Ark would set forward (וְעַל דָּא כַּד אֲרוֹנָא הֲוָה נָטִיל), Moshe said: “Arise, Hashem, do not abandon them, turn Your face toward us” (מֹשֶׁה אָמַר קוּמָה יְיָ, לָא תִּשְׁבּוֹק לוֹן, אַהְדָּר אַנְפָּךְ לְגַבָּן). Then the Nun turned toward them in this manner (כְּדֵין נוּ״ן אִתְהַדָּר לְגַבַּיְיהוּ כְּגַוְונָא דָּא), like one who turns his face toward the one he loves (כְּמַאן דִּמְהַדָּר אַנְפֵּיהּ לְמַאן דְּרָחִים). And when the Ark rested (וְכַד הֲוָה שָׁארֵי אֲרוֹנָא), and Yisrael to rest (וְיִשְׂרָאֵל לְמִשְׁרֵי), then the Nun turned its face from Yisrael (כְּדֵין אַהְדָּר נוּ״ן אַנְפּוֹי מִיִשְׂרָאֵל), and returned toward the Ark (וְאִתְהַדָּר לְגַבֵּי אֲרוֹנָא), and in all was it turned (וּבְכֹלָּא אִתְהַדָּר).

Rabbi Shimon said (אָמַר רִבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן): El'azar (אֶלְעָזָר), surely it is so (בְּודַּאי הָכִי הוּא). But here He did not turn His face from Yisrael For if so, the Nun would need to be turned from another, supernal side - some say: from above This one turned backward (הַאי מְנוּזָר לַאֲחוֹרָא), and this one on the straight path toward the Ark (וְהַאי בְּאוֹרַח מֵישָׁר לְגַבֵּי אֲרוֹנָא).
