Come and see (תָּא חֲזֵי), how many garments are prepared in that world (כַמָה לְבוּשִׁין מִזְדַּמְּנִין בְּהַהוּא עָלְמָא). And that man who did not merit in this world with garments of mitzvah (וְהַהוּא בַּר נָשׁ דְּלָא זָכֵי בְּהַאי עָלְמָא בִּלְבוּשִׁין דְּמִצְוָה), when he enters that world (כַד עָיֵיל לְהַהוּא עָלְמָא), they clothe him in one garment that is recognized by the masters of Gehinnom (מְלָבְּשִׁין לֵיהּ בְּחַד לְבוּשָׁא דְּאִשְׁתְּמוֹדַע לְגַבֵּי מָארֵיהוֹן דְּגֵיהִנָּם). And that garment - woe to one who is clothed in it

For behold, how many appointed guards are ready to seize him (דְּהָא כַּמָּה גַּרְדִּינֵי נִמוּסִין, זְמִינִין לְאַחֲדָא בֵּיהּ), and bring him into Gehinnom (וְעַיְילֵי לֵיהּ לַגֵּיהִנָּם). And Shlomo the king cried out and said: “At all times let your garments be white” (Ecclesiastes 9)

It was taught in the secret of the Sefer d’Tzeni‘uta (Concealed Book) (תָּאנָא בְּרָזָא דְּסִפְרָא דִּצְנִיעוּתָא): four kings go forth to meet four (אַרְבַּע מַלְכִין נָפְקִין לְקַדְמוּת אַרְבַּע). In them hang clusters of grapes in the vineyard (בְּהוּ תַּלְיָין כַּעֲנָבִים בְּאִתְכְּלָא), bound within them are seven lines (צְרִירָן בְּהוּ ז׳ רְהִיטִין), bearing testimony (סָהֲדִין סַהֲדוּתָא). Yet they do not remain in their places

Ra‘aya Meheimna

Tzitzit - this commandment is to remind all the commandments of the Orayta (צִּיצִּית פִּקּוּדָא דָּא אִיהוּ לְאַדְכָּרָא כָּל פִּקּוּדֵי אוֹרַיְיתָא), as it is said: “And you shall see it, and remember all the commandments of Hashem, and do them” (Numbers 15) (בְּגִינָהּ כְּמָה דְאַתְּ אָמֵר וּרְאִיתֶם אֹתוֹ וּזְכַרְתֶּם אֶת כָּל מִצְּוֹת יְיָ וַעֲשִׂיתֶם אֹתָם). This is the sign of the King, for remembrance and for action It is written: “And you shall make a tzitz of gold” (Exodus 28) And behold, we have established the secret of the tzitz, that the Kohen Gadol is crowned with it And this is tzitz - that eyes should gaze upon it (וְדָא אִיהוּ צִּיץ, לְאִסְתַּכְּלָא בֵּיהּ עַיְינִין), for it is the sign of the supernal world in which the Kohen Gadol is crowned (דְּאִיהוּ סִימַן דְּעָלְמָא עִלָּאָה, דְּאִתְעַטָר בֵּיהּ כַּהֲנָא רַבָּא). And therefore, its vision atones for insolence of face (וּבְגִין כַּךְ אִסְתַּכְּלוּתָא דִּילֵיהּ מְכַפְּרָא עַל עַזּוּת פָּנִים), which cannot stand before Him, but only faces of truth (דְּלָא קַיְּימָא לְקַמֵּיהּ, אֶלָּא פָּנִים דְּקְשׁוֹט), the secret of all those supernal faces, which are faces of truth (רָזָא דְּכָל אִינּוּן פָּנִים עִלָּאִין, דְּאִינּוּן פָּנִים דִּקְשׁוֹט, פָּנִים דֶּאֱמֶת), included in the truth of Ya‘akov (דִּכְלִילָן בֶּאֱמֶת דְּיַעֲקֹב).

Tzitzit is the female, the secret of the lower world Its gazing is for remembrance (אִסְתַּכְּלוּתָא לְאַדְכְּרָא). Tzitz is male, tzitzit is female (צִּיץ דְּכַר, צִּיצִּית נוּקְבָא), and this is for every man (וְדָא לְכָל בַר נַשׁ). Tzitz is for the Kohen (צִּיץ לְכַהֲנָא). And we have learned: it is forbidden to gaze at Shekhinta Therefore there is tekhelet (בְּגִין כָּךְ אִית תְּכֵלָא), for tekhelet is the throne of the house of David, and its rectification (בְּגִין דִּתְכֵלֶת, אִיהוּ כֻּרְסְיָיא לְבֵית דָּוִד, וְתִקּוּנָא דִּילֵיהּ). And this is awe before Hashem, to fear that place

And upon this is written: “And you shall see it, and remember all the commandments of Hashem” (Numbers 15) And this is the throne in which judgments of souls are judged (וְדָא כֻּרְסְיָיא דְּדַיְינִין בָּהּ דִּינֵי נְפָשׁוֹת), as it is established: that all kinds of dreams are good, except for tekhelet (blue), which is the throne that ascends in judgment of souls (כְּמָה דְּאוֹקְמוּהָ, דְּכָל גַּוְונִין טָבִין לְחֶלְמָא, בַּר תְּכֵלָא, דְּאִיהוּ כֻּרְסְיָיא דְּסָלִיק בְּדִינָא דִּנְפָשׁוֹת).

It is written: “And they shall put upon the tzitzit of the corner a thread of tekhelet” (Numbers 15) “And they shall put upon the corner” is not written, but “upon the tzitzit” (וְנָתְנוּ עַל הַכָּנָף לָא כְּתִיב, אֶלָּא וְנָתְנוּ עַל צִּיצִּית). For this is what covers over the other threads “And you shall see it and remember” (וּרְאִיתֶם אוֹתוֹ וּזְּכַרְתֶּם). And it is written: “Remember what Amalek did to you” (Deuteronomy 25) What is the reason for this? It is like a son who broke a fence, and a dog bit him Whenever his father wished to rebuke his son, he would say: “Remember when the dog bit you” (כָּל זִמְנָא דַּאֲבוֹי בָּעֵי לְאוֹכָחָא לִבְרֵיהּ, הֲוָה אָמַר הֲוִי דָּכִיר כַּד נָשִׁיךְ לָךְ כַּלְבָא). So here too: “And you shall see it and remember” - for this is the place where souls ascend for judgment

In this manner, “And it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looks upon it, shall live” (Numbers 21) Why? Rather, when he lifted his eyes and saw the image of the one that bit him, he became afraid, and prayed before Hashem, and knew that it was the punishment of the guilty Just as whenever a son sees the strap of his father, he fears his father

Saved from the strap, he is saved from everything Who causes him to be saved? That which he sees with his eyes - that strap; that strap causes him to be saved And upon this it is written: “And he looked upon it, and lived” (Numbers 21) He saw the strap that smote him, and it brought him salvation

So too here: “And you shall see it, and remember, and do” (Numbers 15) And if not, behold that strap - for this will cause you always to be understanding, in order to serve Me continually, and then you shall do

“And you shall not stray after your heart” (Numbers 15) (וְלֹא תָתוּרוּ אַחֲרֵי לְבַבְכֶם) - this prevents you from following evil ways (יִמְנַע מִנְּכוֹן בִּישִׁין אֹרְחִין אַחֲרָנִין). Surely, “do not stray” and do not serve evil And for this reason ascends the color of tekhelet This tekhelet resembles the Throne of Glory As the Throne of Glory causes man to go in a straight path, to purify him (מַה כִּסֵּא הַכָּבוֹד, עָבִיד לְבַר נָשׁ לְמֵהַךְ לְאָרְחָא דְּמֵישָׁר, לְדַכְּאָה לֵיהּ), so too tekhelet causes man to go in the straight path (אוּף הַאי תְּכֵלֶת, עָבִיד לְבַּר נָשׁ לְמֵהַךְ בְּאֹרַח מֵישָׁר). Surely everything is in order to inspire awe of that place, to go in the straight path It is written: “From the wing of the earth we have heard songs: glory to the righteous. But I said, my secret is mine…” “From the wing of the earth” - this is the wing of tzitzit, which is the wing of the earth “We have heard songs” - these are the other threads which go forth and hang from the supernal place, within those supernal paths that proceed from supernal chokhmah “Glory to the righteous” - this is the Tzaddik, the life of the worlds, for these threads are his beauty, for from him they go forth, and each thread is crowned in two sides And when I contemplated, I said, “My secret is mine, my secret is mine” - for from the supernal secret of all faith they proceed

And when I gazed upon tekhelet [blue thread] (וְכַד אִסְתַּכַּלְנָא בִּתְכֵלֶת), and saw the strap for lashes (וַחֲמֵינָא רְצּוּעָה לְאַלְקָאָה), the place of awe, to be feared (אֲתָר דְּחִילוּ לְמִדְחַל), I said, “Woe to me!” (אֲמֵינָא אוֹי לִי), for people do not know to take heed and contemplate (דִּבְנֵי נָשָׁא לָא יַדְעֵי לְאַשְׁגְּחָא וּלְאִסְתַּכְּלָא), for what they are punished through falsehood (עַל מַה מִתְעָנְשִׁין לְשַׁקְרָא). “In this, traitors betray” (בְּהַאי בּוֹגְדִים בָּגָדוּ): for they recite Keri’at Shema [Recital of the Shema] without tzitzit [fringes] (דְּהָא קוֹרִין קְרִיאַת שְׁמַע בְּלָא צִּיצִּית), and bear false testimony (וְסָהֲדִין סַהֲדוּתָא דְּשִׁקְרָא). And these are traitors who betray (וְאִלֵּין אִינּוּן בּוֹגְדִים דְּבָּגָדוּ), deceiving themselves (מְשַׁקְּרֵי דְּגַרְמַיְיהוּ). “And a garment—traitors have betrayed” (וּבֶגֶד בּוֹגְדִים בָּגָדוּ): their garment without tzitzit [fringes] (לְבוּשָׁא דִּלְהוֹן בְּלָא צִּיצִּית) is called “a garment of traitors” (אִקְרֵי בֶּגֶד בּוֹגְדִים).

The garment of these traitors who betrayed - liars, bearing false testimony every day Woe to them, woe to their souls, for they ascend into that throne of tekhelet for judgment And upon them it is written: “He that speaks lies shall not stand before My eyes” (Psalm 101) That garment of theirs is recognized before all the masters of judgment Woe to them, for they have no portion in the World to Come Fortunate are the Righteous, whose garments and rectifications are recognized above, to do good to them in this world and in the World to Come (Until here) (ע״כ).

This commandment is the mitzvah of tzitzit (פִּקּוּדָא דָּא מִצְוַת צִיצִית), comprised of tekhelet and white (כָּלִיל תְּכֵלֶת וְלָבָן), judgment and mercy in fire (דִּינָא וְרַחֲמֵי בְּנוּרָא). White fire does not consume (אֶשָּׁא חִוָּורָא לָא אָכִיל), tekhelet consumes and drinks (תְּכֵלָא אָכִיל וְשָׁצֵי). “And the fire consumed the burnt offering” (2 Chronicles 7) (וַתֹּאכַל הָעוֹלָה), white from the right (חִוָּור מִימִינָא), tekhelet from the left (תְּכֵלֶת מִשְּׂמָאלָא).

The middle column unites both of them, green And for this reason the masters of the Mishnah established: “From when does one recite Shema in the morning? From when one can distinguish between tekhelet and white” (וּבְגִין דָּא אוּקְמוּהָ מָארֵי מַתְנִיתִין, מֵאֵימָתַי קוֹרִין אֶת שְׁמַע בְּשַׁחֲרִית, מִשֶּׁיַּכִּיר בֵּין תְּכֵלֶת לְלָבָן). And for this reason they instituted the section of tzitzit to be read in union

Rabbi Nehorai opened in the section of tzitzit and expounded (פָּתַח רַבִּי נְהוֹרָאי בְּפָרָשַׁת צִיצִית וְדָרַשׁ): “And they shall make for themselves tzitzit on the corners of their garments throughout their generations” (Numbers 15) (וְעָשׂוּ לָהֶם צִיצִית עַל כַּנְפֵי בִגְדֵיהֶם לְדוֹרוֹתָם). Why is it written here ledorotam full, while regarding Shabbat it is written deficient, as it says: “To observe the Shabbat throughout their generations” (Exodus 31)

For we have learned (דְּתָנִינָן): They ordained that the section of tzitzit should be included in the recitation of Shema (תִּקְנוּ פָּרָשַׁת צִיצִית בִּקְרִיאַת שְׁמַע). And in a man’s dwelling, one finds the section of Shema, except for the section of tzitzit, which is missing from there With what is it completed? Only when a man wraps himself in his house with tzitzit, and goes out wearing it to his doorway, then it is complete And the Holy One, blessed be He, rejoices in him (וְהַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא שָׂמֵחַ בּוֹ), and the Angel of Death moves away from there (וּמַלְאַךְ הַמָּוְת זָז מִשָּׁם). And this is ledorotam, that it should be complete And when he goes out from the entrance of his house with this mitzvah, the destroying angel moves away from there, and a man is saved from all harm From where do we know this? From that which is written: 'Mezuzot.' From its letters it is implied: 'Move away, Death' (Zaz Mavet) (מְנָלָן. For permission is not given to the destroyer, and he departs from his entrance

As for Shabbat, why is it written 'for their generations' deficient? Because when the day is sanctified, the dwelling of Yisrael must be with a burning lamp, a set table, and a prepared bed, their dwelling arranged like that of a groom to receive the bride And what is this? It is Shabbat, who is the bride (וּמַאי נִיהוּ. And she is never brought in except to a dwelling arranged in her honor, as is fitting for her And upon this it is written: “To make the Shabbat” (Exodus 31) And it is written: ledorotam - to bring in the holy bride into her dwelling and to be within her

At the time when the day is sanctified, and this bride comes, and she does not find a prepared dwelling, a set table, and a burning lamp (בְּשָׁעָה שֶׁקִּידַּשׁ הַיּוֹם, וְכַלָּה זוֹ בָּאָה, וְאֵינָהּ מוֹצְאָה דִירָה מְתוּקֶּנֶת, וְשׁוּלְחָן עָרוּךְ, וְנֵר דָּלוּק), this bride says: “This dwelling is not of Yisrael. Between Me and the children of Yisrael it is written - this is not of Yisrael, his dwelling is not for holiness” (כַּלָּה זוֹ אוֹמֶרֶת, אֵין דִּירָה זוֹ מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל. Therefore there must be a sign of holiness in the house And upon this it is written ledorotam in Shabbat and in tzitzit

Rabbi Nehorai said (אָמַר רִבִּי נְהוֹרָאי): I testify concerning one who goes out from the door of his house wrapped in the garment of mitzvah, and with tefillin upon his head (אַסְהַדְּנָא, עַל מַאן דְּנָפַק מִתְּרַע בֵּיתֵיהּ בְּעִיטּוּפָא דְמִצְוָה, וּתְפִילִּין בְּרֹאשׁוֹ), at the time when he goes out between two gates (בְּשָׁעָה דְּנָפֵיק בֵּין תְּרֵין תַּרְעִין), Shekhinta is appointed upon him And two angels stand over him, one on the right and one on the left (וּתְרֵין מַלְאָכִין דְּקָיְימָין עֲלֵיהּ, חַד מִיָּמִינָא, וְחַד מִשְּׂמָאלָא), and all of them accompany him until the synagogue and bless him (וְכוּלְּהוֹן מְלַוִּין לֵיהּ עַד בֵּי כְּנִישְׁתָּא, וּמְבָרְכִין לֵיהּ). And one accuser who stands at the entrances of men goes behind them, and against his will he answers and says: Amen

Sefer haBahir

Why place tekhelet (blue) in tzitzit (מַאי טַעְמָא אָנוּ מֵטִילִין תְּכֵלֶת בַּצִּיצִית), and why thirty-two (וּמַאי טַעְמָא שְׁלֹשִׁים וּשְׁתַּיִם). Parable: A king with a fine garden (מָשָׁל לְמֶלֶךְ שֶׁהָיָה לוֹ גַּן נָאֵה), thirty-two paths (וְלוֹ שְׁלֹשִׁים וּשְׁתַּיִם נְתִיבוֹת). He set a guard (וְשָׂם שׁוֹמֵר), revealed them only to him (וְהוֹדִיעוֹ לְבַדּוֹ אוֹתָן). Said: guard them, walk them (אָמַר לוֹ, שׁוֹמְרֵם וְלֵךְ בָּהֶם), then peace to you (וְכָל זְמָן שֶׁתַדְרִיכֵם שָׁלוֹם לָךְ). The guard said: alone I cannot (אָמַר, אִם אֲנִי אֶהְיֶה לְבַדִּי), one cannot maintain all (אִי אֶפְשָׁר לְשׁוֹמֵר אֶחָד לְקַיֵּים). And people will say: stingy king, greedy guard So he set more guards (לְכָךְ שָׂם שׁוֹמֵרִים אֲחֵרִים), over the thirty-two paths (עַל הַנְתִיבוֹת אֵלֶּה שֶׁהֵן שְׁלֹשִׁים וּשְׁתַּיִם). Why tekhelet (וּמַאי טַעְמָא דְּתְכֵלֶת). Lest guards say: the garden is ours He gave them a sign (נָתַן לָהֶם סִימָן): see the King’s seal (רְאוּ הַסִימָן לַמֶּלֶךְ). The garden is His (שֶׁהַגָּן הַזֶּה), the paths He arranged (וְאֵלֶּה הַנְתִיבוֹת הוּא תִקְנָם). Not mine, behold His seal

Parable: A king and his daughter (מָשָׁל לְמֶלֶךְ וּבִתוֹ), they had servants (שֶׁהָיוּ לָהֶם עֲבָדִים). They sought to go far (בִּקְשׁוּ לֵילֵךְ מֵרָחוֹק), feared the king (פַּחֲדוּ מִן אֵימַת הַמֶּלֶךְ). The king gave his sign They feared the daughter (פַּחֲדוּ מִן הַבַּת), she gave her sign (וְנָתְּנָה לָהֶם סִימָן). They said: now with two signs, “Hashem shall guard you from all evil, He shall guard your soul” (Psalm 121) And what is it? Land from which heavens were hewn (וּמַאי נִיהִי, אֶרֶץ דְּנֵחְצָבָה מִמֶּנָּה שָּׁמַיִם), the Throne of Kudsha Berikh Hu (וְהִיא כִּסְאוֹ שֶׁל הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא). A precious stone (וְהִיא אֶבֶן יְקָרָה), the sea of wisdom (וְהִיא יַם הַחָכְמָה). Opposite it: tekhelet in tzitzit

Rabbi Meir said (דְּאָמַר רַבִּי מֵאִיר): Why tekhelet different from other colors (מָה נִשְׁתָּנָה תְּכֵלֶת מִכָּל מִינֵי צִבְעוֹנִין). Because tekhelet resembles the sea The sea resembles the sky The sky resembles the Throne of Glory As it is said: “And they saw the God Yisrael, and beneath His feet like sapphire, and like the essence of heaven for purity” (Exodus 24) And it is written: “Like the appearance of sapphire, the likeness of a Throne” (Ezekiel 1) (Until here) (ע״כ).
