Rabbi El‘azar said: “He shall not lie down”—what is “He shall not lie down”? Rather, every single night, when a man goes in the commandments of his Master, he does not lie down upon his bed until he has slain one thousand, one hundred and twenty-five of those evil weapons that dwell with him
Rabbi Abba said: A thousand are those of the left side, as it is written: “A thousand shall fall at your side” (רִבִּי אַבָּא אָמַר אֶלֶף אִינּוּן דִּסְטָר שְׂמָאלָא דִּכְתִיב יִפּוֹל מִצִּדְּךָ אֶלֶף) (Psalms 91). As it is written: “Let the pious exult in glory…” “The exaltations of El are in their throats…” “To execute vengeance…” this is what is written: “He shall not lie down…” and this is “to execute upon them the judgment…”
Rabbi Ḥizkiyah said: Corresponding to the three times that he smote his she-ass and loaded her with his sorceries, Yisrael were blessed three times Rabbi Ḥiyya said: Corresponding, Yisrael were blessed three times, when Yisrael ascend to appear before the Holy King “And Bil‘am saw that it was good in the eyes of Hashem…” “And he did not go as at other times to meet with enchantments…” (Numbers 24). What is “to meet with enchantments”?
Rabbi Yose said: Those two first times he went with all his sorceries, seeking to harm Yisrael Once he saw the desire of Kudsha Berikh Hu, who said: “Return to Balak, for My children do not desire your words…” Another word is destined from this “So,” as it is written: “So shall you speak” (מִלּוּלָא אוֹחֲרָא זַמִּין מֵהַאי כֹּה כְּמָה דִּכְתִיב וְכֹה תְּדַבֵּר) (Exodus 19). “So shall you speak,” and not you “So shall you speak”—for it rules over all rulers of sorceries and enchantments and evil weapons, that they cannot harm My children Then he desired to gaze upon them with the evil eye
Come and see, this wicked one, when he gazed upon Yisrael, he was looking upon these two levels, Ya'akov and Yisrael, to harm them, either in this or in that by his sorceries Because of this, with every blessing and blessing, Ya'akov and Yisrael were blessed “And Bil‘am saw that it was good…” How did he see? He saw that at the time when the countenance of the King shines, evil weapons do not stand in their existence, and all sorceries and all enchantments do not rise in their practice
Come and see, in these two times it is written: “And Elohim happened upon” and “And Hashem happened upon Bil‘am…” (Numbers 23). And it is written: “So shall you speak” (וּכְתִיב וְכֹה תְּדַבֵּר) (Exodus 19). But now, once he saw that no wrath was found, and his sorceries did not ascend, then: “He did not go as at other times…” (Numbers 24). Once he separated and removed himself from his sorceries, he remained in another arousal to praise Yisrael Rabbi Yehudah said: What arousal is here? He said to him: It was the arousal of a certain spirit from the side of the left, that one under which his weapons and his sorceries were bound
Rabbi El‘azar said: Thus have we learned, that even at this time the spirit of holiness did not rest upon him Rabbi Yose said to him: If so, behold, it is written: “And the spirit of Elohim came upon him,” and in all those other times it is not written thus (Numbers 24). He said to him: So it is Come and see, it is written: “He that has a good eye shall be blessed” (תָּא חֲזֵי כְּתִיב טוֹב עַיִן הוּא יְבוֹרָךְ) (Proverbs 22).
And it has been established: Do not read “shall be blessed,” but “shall bless” (וְהָא אוּקְמוּהָ אַל תִּקְרֵי יְבוֹרָךְ אֶלָּא יְבָרֵךְ). And Bil‘am was of the evil eye, for there was never found in the world an evil eye like his, for wherever he looked with his eye, destruction came And because of this they said (וְעַל דָּא אָמְרוּ), whoever passes his son in the marketplace (הַאי מַאן דְּאַעְבַּר בְּרֵיהּ בְּשׁוּקָא), and fears the evil eye (וּמִסְתַּפֵי מֵעֵינָא בִּישָׁא), let him cover a scarf on his head (יֶחֱפֵּי סוּדְרָא עַל רֵישֵׁיהּ), so the evil eye cannot rule over him (בְּגִין דְּלָא יָכִיל עֵינָא בִּישָׁא לְשַׁלְּטָאָה עָלֵיהּ). So here too (אוּף הָכָא), when Bil‘am saw he could not harm Yisrael with sorceries (כֵּיוָן דְּחָמָא בִּלְעָם דְּלָא יָכִיל בְּחַרְשׁוֹי), he sought to gaze with the evil eye (בָּעָא לְאִסְתַּכָּל בְּהוּ בְּעֵינָא בִּישָׁא), for wherever he looked, destruction came (בְּגִין דִּבְכָל אֲתָר דְּהֲוָה מִסְתָּכַּל בְּעֵינוֹי בִּישִׁין הֲוָה מִתְלַטְּיָיא).
Come and see (תָּא חֲזֵי), his intention against Yisrael (מַה רְעוּתֵיהּ דִּילֵיהּ לַקֳבְלֵהוֹן דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל): “And he set his face toward the wilderness” (כְּתִיב וַיָּשֶׁת אֶל הַמִּדְבָּר פָּנָיו) (Numbers 24). As the Targum says (כְּתַרְגּוּמוֹ), he turned to the calf made in the wilderness (וְשׁוִי לְעַגְלָא דִּי עֲבַדוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּמִדְבְּרָא), to gain support to harm them (בְּגִין דִּיְהֵא לֵיהּ סְטַר סִיּוּעָא לְאַבְאָשָׁא לְהוּ).
Now see what is written (הַשְׁתָּא חָמֵי מַה כְּתִיב): “And Bil‘am lifted his eyes and saw Yisrael” (וַיִּשָּׂא בִּלְעָם אֶת עֵינָיו וַיַּרְא אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל) (Numbers 24). He sought to gaze with the evil eye At that moment (בֵּיהּ שַׁעֲתָא), had Kudsha Berikh Hu not given healing first (אִלְמָלֵא דְּאַקְדִּים לוֹן קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא אַסְוָותָא), he would have destroyed them with his gaze (הֲוָה מְאַבֵּד לוֹן בְּאִסְתַּכְּלוּתָא דְּעֵינוֹי). And what healing did Kudsha Berikh Hu give? At that time: “And the spirit of Elohim was upon him” (בְּהַהִיא שַׁעֲתָא דָּא הוּא דִכְתִיב וַתְּהִי עָלָיו רוּחַ אֱלֹהִים) (Numbers 24). “Upon him”—upon Yisrael it says Like one who covers a scarf on the head of a child (כְּמַאן דְּפָרִישׁ סוּדְרָא עַל רֵישֵׁיהּ דְּיַּנּוּקָא), so his eye will not rule over them (בְּגִין דְּלָא יִשְׁלוֹט בְּהוּ עֵינוֹי).
