And in the manner that they are five wings of the lung (וּכְגַוְונָא דְּאִינּוּן חֲמִשָׁה כַּנְפֵי רֵיאָה), some say: branches (ס״א ענפי), all of them are open without obstruction (כֻּלְּהוּ פְּתִיחָן בְּלָא סִרְכָא), to receive this voice (לְקַבְּלָא הַאי קוֹל). So too, there must be five arrangements of the mouth (הָכִי נָמֵי צְּרִיכִין לְמֶהֱוִי חַמְשָׁא תִּקּוּנִין דְּפוּמָא), all of them open without obstruction (כֻּלְּהוּ פְּתִיחָן בְּלָא סִירְכָא), in five arrangements (בְּחָמֵשׁ תִּקּוּנִין), which are: Aleph, Chet, Hei, Ayin in the throat (דְּאִינּוּן: אחהע בַּגָרוֹן), Bet–Vav–Mem–Peh in the lips (בומף בְּשִׂפְוָון), Gimel, Yod, Kaf, Qof in the palate (גיכק בַּחֵיךְ), Dalet, Tet, Lamed, Nun, Tav in the tongue (דטלנתּ בְּלִישָׁנָא), Zayin, Samekh, Shin, Resh, Tzadi in the teeth (זסשרץ בַּשִּׁינַיִם). And speech that is with them (וְדִבּוּר דִּיְהֵא בְּהוֹן), should be without obstruction and hindrance at all (בְּלָא סִרְכָא וְעִכּוּבָא כְּלַל). This is what is written (הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב): “And it came to pass, before he had finished speaking, that behold, Rivkah came out” (Bereshit 24) (וַיְהִי הוּא טֶרֶם כִּלָּה לְדַבֵּר וְהִנֵּה רִבְקָה יוֹצֵּאת).
This is prayer (דָּא צְּלוֹתָא), which is speech (דְּאִיהוּ דִּבּוּר). And because of it, it was said (וּבְגִינֵיהּ אִתְּמַר): If my prayer is fluent in my mouth, I know that it is accepted (אִם שְׁגוּרָה תְּפִלָּתִי בְּפִי יוֹדֵעַ אֲנִי שֶׁמְקוּבָּל). And if there is obstruction and it comes forth with hindrance, I know that I am confused (Because, some say): such as obstruction in the lung, it is terefah And this voice is Shema Yisrael (וְקוֹל דָּא שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל), of which it is said: “And I heard the sound of their wings” (Ezekiel 1) (דְּבֵיהּ וָאֶשְׁמַע אֶת קוֹל כַּנְפֵיהֶם). And this is YHVH, which is voice (וְדָא יְדוָֹ״ד דְּאִיהוּ קוֹל), when it goes forth to receive Shekhinta in prayer in quietude (כַּד נָפִיק לְקַבְּלָא שְׁכִינְתָּא בִּצְּלוֹתָא בַּחֲשָׁאי), which is speech (דְּאִיהוּ דִּבּוּר), in which is said: “Adonai, open my lips” (דְּבֵיהּ אֲדֹנָ״י שְׂפָתַי תִּפְתָּח). All the limbs open all their wings, in 248 words, which are in the four portions of the Shema, in which the voice descends And when it descends, many birds chirp toward it, with many kinds of melody, all upon the limbs of the body, which are the branches of the Tree And in every wing of every limb, there is the dwelling of the bird, which is Adonai, and in every branch there is found an opening toward her Husband “Adonai, open my lips” is the opening toward Him, in the prayer of the Amidah There is no limb from the 248 limbs of the Shekhinta which is not an opening to receive it
And because of this it is called the conversation of the ministering angels It is the chirping of birds, which are the Neshamot that dwell in the limbs It is the conversation of the branches, which are the branches of the Tree And at that time, when YHVH descends toward Adonai in every limb, it is said of them: “When they stood, they let down their wings” (Ezekiel 1) And this is the mystery of Hashmal: fiery Chayot, sometimes silent, and sometimes speaking
And the masters of the Mishnah said (וְאָמְרוּ מָארֵי מַתְנִיתִין): it was taught in a Baraita (בְּמַתְנִיתָא תָּנָא): “When speech goes forth from the mouth of the Holy One, blessed be He, they are silent (כְּשֶׁהַדִּבּוּר יוֹצֵּא מִפִּי הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא, חָשׁוֹת); and when speech does not go forth from the mouth of the Holy One, blessed be He, they speak” (וּכְשֶׁאֵין הַדִּבּוּר יוֹצֵּא מִפִּי הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא, מְמַלְּלוֹת).
At that time, when voice and speech are unified as one (בְּהַהוּא זִמְנָא דְּמִתְיַיחֲדִין קוֹל וְדִבּוּר כַּחֲדָא), which are YAHDVNHY (דְּאִינּוּן יְאֲהדוָֹנָהי), they are silent (חָשׁוֹת). But when “their faces and their wings are divided” (אֲבָל בְּזִמְנָא דִּפְנֵיהֶם וְכַנְפֵיהֶם פְּרוּדוֹת), YHVH is separated from Adonai (יְדוָֹ״ד מִן אֲדֹנָ״י בְּפֵרוּדָא); He is found in the four faces of the Chayot [living creatures] (אִיהוּ אִשְׁתְּכַח בְּאַרְבַּע אַנְפֵּי חֵיוָן), all of them open (כֻּלְּהוּ פְּתִיחָן), and facing Him they speak (לָקֳבְלֵיהּ מְמַלְּלוֹת), to request nourishment (לְמִשְׁאַל מְזוֹנָא), because nourishment for all is in Him (בְּגִין דְּמָזוֹן לְכֹלָּא בֵּיהּ) (Daniel 4). Adonai is found in the wings of the Chayot [living creatures] (אֲדֹנָ״י אִשְׁתְּכַח בְּכַנְפֵי הַחַיּוֹת), all of them open toward the Chayot [living creatures] (כֻּלְּהוּ פְּתִיחָן לְגַבֵּי חֵיוָן).
They roar with the voice that is YHVH, all on the right side The Ofanim chirp with speech, which is Adonai on the left side In the Serafim, voice and speech are joined in the middle They unify YHVH and Adonai (יְאֲהדוָֹנָהי). In them: “And a bird shall fly” (Bereshit 1) This is what is written: “And one of the Serafim flew to me” (Isaiah 6) And it was said of them: “A bird of the heavens will carry the voice, and the one with wings shall tell the matter” (Ecclesiastes 10) And the Serafim, six wings for each From the side of the Vav, which is the middle pillar (מִסִּטְרָא דְּאָת ו׳, דְּאִיהוּ עַמּוּדָא דְּאֶמְצָּעִיתָא), including right and left (כָּלִיל יְמִינָא וּשְׂמָאלָא). And it includes six words: “With two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew” (Isaiah 6) This is a sign (סִימָן).
Second Tikkun: “And above the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man upon it from above” (Ezekiel 1) A trace of the Sefer Torah (רְשִׁימוּ דְסֵפֶר תּוֹרָה), and it is: “As the beauty of a man to dwell in a house” (Isaiah 44) (וְאִיהוּ כְּתִפְאֶרֶת אָדָם לָשֶׁבֶת בָּיִת). And the sages established: Whoever recites Keri’at Shema evening and morning, it is as if he fulfills “And you shall meditate upon it day and night” (Joshua 1) The white Tallit is to the right, from the side of Chesed And it was said: “E-l, King, sits upon the throne of mercy and conducts Himself with lovingkindness” (וְאִתְּמַר, אֵל מֶלֶךְ יוֹשֵׁב עַל כִּסֵּא רַחֲמִים וּמִתְנַהֵג בַּחֲסִידוּת). “And the throne is established with Chesed” (Isaiah 16) Chesed ascends in seventy-two rings and bindings of the Tallit And there is a Tallit from the side of Metatron, who is Tet, including eighteen, between knots and links in every direction
Five knots, corresponding to the Five Books of the Torah And thirteen links, corresponding to the thirteen measures of mercy of the Orayta As it was said of them: “With thirteen attributes the Torah is interpreted” (וְאִתְּמַר בְּהוֹן, בי״ג מִדּוֹת הַתּוֹרָה נִדְרֶשֶׁת). And because of this it is said: “As the appearance of a man upon it from above” (Ezekiel 1) In the image of Tiferet, for it is “The beauty of a man upon it from above” (בְּדִיּוּקְנָא דְּתִפְאֶרֶת, דְּאִיהוּ תִפְאֶרֶת אָדָם עָלָיו מִלְמָעְלָה). And He is called by His Name: Yod, Heh, Vav, Heh “All who are called by My Name, for My glory I created him, I formed him, I also made him” (Isaiah 43) And above-“as the appearance of a man”-this is the Shekhinta, for She is like the vision of the middle pillar (וּלְעֵילָּא כְּמַרְאֵה אָדָם, דָּא שְׁכִינְתָּא, דְּאִיהִי כְּחֵיזוּ דְּעַמּוּדָא דְּאֶמְצָּעִיתָא), in four faces and in ten Sefirot, which are Adam (בְּד׳ אַנְפִּין, וּבְעֶשֶׂר סְפִירָאן, דְּאִינּוּן אָדָם). And the four faces of Adam, four letters And they are fourteen letters, and in them: “And by the hand of the prophets I will liken” (Hosea 12)
And furthermore, He is called Chai, from the side of the Tzaddik And in Him, Kudsha Berikh Hu and His Shekhinta are then called “Adam,” which is the middle pillar Tal, and His Shekhinta is Heh And with Heh, He is Adam Because Tal rises in the calculation of Yod, Heh, Vav And this is the one who brings down the Tal, toward the Heh The knot of the Tallit, the Chai of the worlds (קֶשֶׁר דְּטַלִית, חַ״י עָלְמִין), which binds Kudsha Berikh Hu and His Shekhinta in all directions (דְּקָשִׁיר קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא וּשְׁכִינְתֵּיהּ בְּכָל סִטְרִין), in the four corners of the Tallit (בְּאַרְבַּע כַּנְפוֹת דְּטַלִית).
Tefillin on the left (תְּפִלִּין מִשְּׂמָאלָא). This is what is written (הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב): “Hashem has sworn by His right hand and by the arm of His strength” (Isaiah 62) (נִשְׁבַּע יְיָ בִּימִינוֹ וּבִזְרוֹעַ עֻזּוֹ). By His right hand-this is Orayta By the arm of His strength-these are Tefillin YHVH in four sections Adonai is a palace for four letters in the four compartments of Tefillin The knot of the hand-Tefillin is the Tzaddik, Chai of the worlds It is the bond of both On the left arm (בִּזְרוֹעַ שְׂמָאלָא). The knot of the head is the middle pillar YHVH–Ehyeh are held above These are Keter, Chokhmah, Binah
Keri’at Shema is union in the middle It grasps between Tzitzit and Tefillin All sections of Tzitzit and Tefillin are included in Shema From the middle pillar, which is Tallit and Tefillin “It shall be a sign upon your hand and frontlets between your eyes” (Exodus 13) “They shall make for themselves Tzitzit” (Numbers 15) The Shin of the Tefillin is halakhah to Moshe from Sinai “All nations shall see the Name of Hashem upon you and they shall fear you” (Deuteronomy 28) They said: this is the head-Tefillin The Shin of the Tefillin: two Shins are six hundred Six degrees (שִׁית דַּרְגִּין). Seven branches of the two Shins are thirteen All is 613 (וְכֹלָּא תרי״ג). No commandment is not weighed to the whole Orayta
In this manner, every commandment is YHVH Yah with “My Name” is 365 (יָ״הּ עִם שְׁמִ״י שס״ה). Vav–Heh with “My Remembrance” is 248 (ו״ה עִם זִכְרִי רמ״ח). Therefore every mitzvah is weighed to 613 (וּבְגִין דָּא כָּל מִצְּוָה אִיהִי שְׁקִילָא לְתרי״ג). And behold they established: Shema Yisrael includes 613 from the side of Tzitzit And 613 from the side of Tefillin is everywhere “And they shall be frontlets” - Totafot (וְהָיוּ לְטוֹטָפוֹת, טֹטָפֹת): “Tet,” the Chai of the worlds, the Tzaddik, corresponding to Metatron (טט, ח״י עָלְמִין, צַדִּיק, לְקָבְלֵיהּ מְטַטְרוֹן). “Pat,” Tiferet (פַּת, תִּפְאֶרֶת). Metatron is the horse of Tiferet, in which all the Sefirot are enclothed And thus he is like a body to a Neshama When Kudsha Berikh Hu withdraws from him, he remains mute He has no voice and no speech It is found that Kudsha Berikh Hu and His Shekhinta are voice and speech
For every angel and angel And in every voice and speech of Orayta And in every voice of prayer And in every commandment In every place His dominion is over upper and lower He is the life of all He bears all (אִיהוּ סָבִיל כֹּלָּא). There is no Adonai without YHVH Just as there is no speech without voice And no voice without speech This is truth in Atzilut But in the world of separation, there is voice without speech The knot of Tefillin-Shaddai-binds above and below And this is the Tzaddik, Chai of the worlds, who holds (some say: in it) between voice and speech
Meanwhile, Ra‘aya Meheimna came to the Sava He said: Sava, Sava (וְאָמַר סָבָא סָבָא), Tefillin, Tzitzit, and Mezuzah section are three commandments (תְּפִלִּין וְצִּיצִּית וּפָרָשַׁת מְזוּזָה, אִינּוּן ג׳ פִּקּוּדִין). They are included in Keri’at Shema Keri’at Shema is the fourth commandment Tzitzit is mentioned three times In Tefillin “sign” is mentioned twice In Tzitzit, the seven of “that you may remember” must be cast
In Mezuzah, Shaddai is outside, YHVH inside Why are the sections closed and open The measure of length and breadth of Tzitzit was fixed All the length of Tzitzit is twelve thumb-widths The mitzvah of Tekhelet: one third cord, two thirds fringe Between knot and knot, the width of a thumb Each link must be tripled So too Tefillin, why on the head
To correspond to the heart (וְלָקֳבֵל לִבָּא). The straps reach the heart on the left And the navel on the right The strap of the hand is wound three times on the middle finger But surely, a garment of honor is not unless three by three to every side-twelve Corresponding to four white garments, four golden garments, four of a common priest From the side of the blessing of a common priest is hinted: “Let not the blessing of a common man be light in your eyes” (וּמִסִּטְרָא דְּבִרְכַּת כֹּהֵן הֶדְיוֹט קָא רָמִיז, אַל תְּהִי בִּרְכַּת הֶדְיוֹט קַלָה בְּעֵינֶיךָ). One third cord, two thirds fringe-this is Tekhelet
Every link is tripled-every triple is from the side of holiness As it is written: “Holiness, unto You they shall triple” (Isaiah 6) Yisrael is a third, because “the third over all” (Exodus 14) Tzitzit is from the side of the middle pillar It is the third to the Patriarchs Every tripled matter-Vav, Heh, Vav-each word is tripled from its side
A link, encircled by three windings, is the Shekhinta “Holiness, unto You they shall triple” (קְדוּשָּׁה לְךָ יְשַׁלֵּשׁוּ). She is tripled in the middle pillar It includes the three branches of the Patriarchs Which are the Shin of Shabbat, the Shekhinta the unique daughter Some say: full of manna The link is Tekhelet in Tzitzit
Happy is the body that is marked so With the Shekhinta and Kudsha Berikh Hu upon the wings of the mitzvah Marked with the strap of the hand-Tefillah With three windings on the middle finger Which is like the link, encircled by three windings Marked with the knot of the Tefillin It includes two knots, ascending fifteen tripled-two in one knot
Thirteen links contain thirty-nine windings, as the number of Tal Thirteen links as one-ascending between them This is the son of Yah, the middle pillar
Every knot is in the likeness of the palm of the right hand Every link is in the likeness of a finger Each has three joints, corresponding to three windings So in every finger three joints, except the thumb The thumb is the measure between knot and knot of Tzitzit, a thumb’s width This is the measure of the nose And the measure of the right and left eye It is the measure between eye and eye And the measure of the right ear and the left And the measure of each lip And the measure of the tongue (וּמִדָּה דְּלִישָׁנָא). “One measure for all the curtains” (Exodus 26)
A cubit is the measure of the body, for four directions, above and below These are six cubits In each cubit are three joints-eighteen joints in six cubits These are the secret of the eighteen shakings of the lulav For six directions (לְשִׁית סִטְרִין). Three shakings for each direction Of them it is said: “This your stature is like a palm tree” (Song of Songs 7) And this is the measure of the stature, Mikveh Yisrael in the Shekhinta It is eighteen, four times These are four that ascend to seventy-two
