Daf 95a (דַּף צ״ה ע״א)
Rabbi Chiya and Rabbi Yosi stayed overnight (רַבִּי חִיָּיא וְרַבִּי יוֹסִי אִעֲרָעוּ חַד לֵילְיָא) in the Tower of Tzor (בְּמִגְדַּל דְּצוֹר). They lodged there (אִתְאֲרָחוּ תַּמָּן) and rejoiced with one another (וְחַדּוּ דָּא בְּדָא). Rabbi Yosi said (אָמַר רַבִּי יוֹסִי), "How joyful I am to behold the face of the Shekhinta (כַּמָּה חַדֵּינָא דַּחֲמֵינָא אַנְפֵּי שְׁכִינְתָּא), for until now, throughout this entire journey (דְּהַשְׁתָּא בְּכָל אָרְחָא דָּא), I was distressed by a certain Sava, a merchant (אִצְטָעַרְנָא בַּחֲדָא סָבָא, טַיָּיעָא), who asked me questions along the entire way (דְּהֲוָה שָׁאִיל לִי כָּל אָרְחָא):
'Who is the serpent that flies through the air (מַאן הוּא נְחָשָׁא, דְּפָרַח בַּאֲוִירָא), moves about separately (וְאָזִיל בְּפִרוּדָא), yet has rest between its teeth for an ant lying there (וּבֵין כַּךְ וּבֵין כַּךְ, אִית נַיְיחָא לְחַד נְמָלָה, דְּשָׁכִיב בֵּין שִׁנּוֹי)?
It begins in unity and ends in separation (שָׁרֵי בְּחִבּוּרָא וְסִיֵּים בְּפִרוּדָא). And what is the eagle (וּמַאי אִיהוּ נִשְׁרָא) who nests in a tree that never existed (דְּקָא מְקַנְּנָא, בְּאִילָן דְּלָא הֲוָה)? Its offspring were stolen (בְּנוֹי דְּאִתְגְּזָלוּ), yet not from creatures created in a place never created (וְלָאו מִן בִּרְיָין דְּאִתְבְּרִיאוּ בַּאֲתָר דְּלָא אִתְבְּרִיאוּ). When ascending, they descend; when descending, they ascend p6-28(כַּד סַלְּקִין נַחְתִּין, כַּד נַחְתִּין סַלְּקִין). Two that are one,p6-29 and one that is three p6-30(תְּרֵין דְּאִינּוּן חַד, וְחַד דְּאִינּוּן תְּלָתָא). What is the beautiful maiden (מַהוּ עוּלֵימְתָּא שַׁפִּירְתָּא) who has no eyes p6-31(וְלֵית לָהּ עֵיינִין), her body hidden yet revealed (וְגוּפָא טְמִירְתָּא וְאִתְגַּלְיָא)?p6-32 She emerges in the morning and conceals herself by day (אִיהִי נַפְקַת בְּצַפְרָא, וְאִתְכַּסִּיאַת בִּימָמָא), adorned with adornments that never were (אִתְקַשְׁטַת בְּקִשּׁוּטִין דְּלָא הָווֹ).' He asked all this along the way, and it troubled me (כָּל דָּא שָׁאִיל בְּאָרְחָא, וְאִצְטָעַרְנָא). But now I have relief (וְהַשְׁתָּא אִית לִי נַיְיחָא). Had we been alone (דְּאִילּוּ הֲוֵינָא כַּחֲדָא), we could have occupied ourselves with matters of Orayta (אִתְעֲסַקְנָא בְּמִלֵּי דְּאוֹרַיְיתָא), rather than idle things (מַה דַּהֲוֵינָן בְּמִלִּין אַחֲרָנִין דְּתֹהוּ).p6-33
Rabbi Chiya said (אָמַר רַבִּי חִיָּיא), That old man, the merchant (וְהַהוּא סָבָא טַיָּיעָא) do you know anything about him? (יַדְעַת בֵּיהּ כְּלוּם)' Rabbi Yosi replied (אָמַר לֵיהּ), 'I know his words have no substance (יָדַעְנָא, דְּלֵית מַמָּשׁוּ בְּמִלּוֹי). Had he known anything, he would have opened with Orayta (דְּאִילּוּ הֲוָה יָדַע, יִפְתָּח בְּאוֹרַיְיתָא) and not spoken empty words along the way (וְלָא הֲוָה אָרְחָא בְּרֵיקָנַיָּיא).'
Rabbi Chiya said (אָמַר רַבִּי חִיָּיא), 'Is that merchant here? (וְהַהוּא טַיָּיעָא אִית הָכָא), for sometimes among those who seem empty (דְּהָא לְזִמְנִין בְּאִינּוּן רֵיקָנִין), a person finds golden bells (יִשְׁכַּח גְּבָר זַגִּין דְּדַהֲבָא).' Rabbi Yosi said to him (אָמַר לֵיהּ), 'Here he is (הָא הָכָא אִיהוּ), preparing his donkey with food (וְאַתְקִין חֲמָרֵיהּ בְּמֵיכְלָא).' They summoned him, and he came before them (קָרוּ לֵיהּ, וְאָתָא לְקָמַיְיהוּ). He said to them (אָמַר לוֹן), 'Now two are three, and three are as one' (הַשְׁתָּא תְּרֵין אִינּוּן תְּלַת, וּתְלַת אִינּוּן כְּחַד). Rabbi Yosi said (אָמַר רַבִּי יוֹסִי), 'Did I not tell you (לָא אֲמֵינָא לָךְ) that all his words are empty (דְּכָל מִלּוֹי רֵיקָנִין), and that he sits among the empty ones? (וְאִינּוּן בְּרֵיקָנַיָּיא, יָתִיב קָמַיְיהוּ)'
The Sava said to them (אָמַר לוֹן רַבָּנָן), "I became a merchant (אֲנָא טַיָּיעָא אִתְעַבִידְנָא), but only recently (וּמִיּוֹמִין זְעִירִין), for originally I was not a merchant (דְּהָא בְּקַדְמִיתָא לָא הֲוֵינָא טַיָּיעָא). But I have one young son (אֲבָל בְּרָא חַד זְעִירָא אִית לִי), whom I placed in a house of study (וְיָהֲבִית לֵיהּ בְּבֵי סִפְרָא), and I desire that he occupy himself with Orayta (וּבָעֵינָא דְּיִשְׁתָּדַּל בְּאוֹרַיְיתָא). Whenever I encounter one of the Rabbis traveling on the way (וְכַד אֲנָא אַשְׁכַּחְנָא חַד מֵרַבָּנָן דְּאָזִיל בְּאָרְחָא), I follow behind him (אֲנָא טָעִין אֲבַתְרֵיהּ), and on this day (וְהַאי יוֹמָא), I had hoped to hear new words of Orayta (חֲשִׁיבְנָא דְּאֶשְׁמַע מִלִּין חַדְתִּין בְּאוֹרַיְיתָא), but I have heard nothing (וְלָא שְׁמַעְנָא מִדִי)."
Rabbi Yosi said (אָמַר ר' יוֹסִי), "Of all the words you have spoken (בְּכָל מִלִּין דְּשָׁמַעְנָא דְּקָאַמָרְתּ), I desire none except one (לָא תַּוָוהְנָא, אֶלָּא מֵחַד). Either you spoke it foolishly (אוֹ אַנְתְּ בִּשְׁטּוּתָא אָמַרְת), or these are empty words (אוֹ מִלִּין רֵיקָנִין אִינּוּן)." The Sava said (אָמַר הַהוּא סָבָא), "Which is it?" (וּמַאן אִיהִי). He replied, "The beautiful maiden…" (אָמַר עוּלֵימְתָּא שַׁפִּירְתָּא וְכוּ').
The Sava opened and said (פָּתַח הַהוּא סָבָא וְאָמַר), (Tehillim 118) "'Hashem is with me, I shall not fear; what can man do to me?' (יְיָ' לִי לֹא אִירָא מַה יַּעֲשֶׂה לִי אָדָם). 'Hashem is with me among my helpers, etc.' (יְיָ' לִי בְּעֹזְרָי וְגוֹ'). 'It is better to take refuge in Hashem, etc.' (טוֹב לַחֲסוֹת בַּיְיָ' וְגוֹ'). How good, pleasant, precious, and lofty are the words of Orayta! (כָּמָּה טָבִין וּנְעִימִין וְיַקִּירִין וְעִלָּאִין מִלִּין דְּאוֹרַיְיתָא). How then could I speak before the Rabbis (וַאֲנָא הֵיכִי אֵימָא קָמֵי רַבָּנָן), having heard nothing from their mouths until now (דְּלָא שְׁמַעְנָא מִפּוּמַיְיהוּ עַד הַשְׁתָּא), not even one word? (אֲפִילּוּ מִלָּה חֲדָא). Yet I must speak (אֲבָל אִית לִי לְמֵימָר), for there is no shame at all (דְּהָא לֵית כִּסּוּפָא כְּלָל) in speaking words of Orayta before everyone (לְמֵימָר מִלֵּי דְּאוֹרַיְיתָא קָמֵי כֹּלָּא)."
That Sava wrapped himself (אִתְעַטָּף הַהוּא סָבָא), opened, and said (פָּתַח וְאָמַר): "(Leviticus 22), And the daughter of a Kohen, if she becomes married to a strange man, she may not eat of the offering of the holy things" (וּבַת כֹּהֵן כִּי תִהְיֶה לְאִישׁ זָר הִיא בִּתְרוּמַת הַקֳּדָשִׁים לא תֹאכֵל). This verse is joined to another verse (הַאי קְרָא, אַקְרָא אַחֲרָא סָמִיךְ): "(Leviticus 22) And the daughter of a Kohen, if she becomes widowed or divorced and has no offspring, she returns to her father's house as in her youth; from her father's bread she may eat, but no stranger may eat thereof" (וּבַת כֹּהֵן כִּי תִהְיֶה אַלְמָנָה וּגְרוּשָׁה וְזֶרַע אֵין לָהּ וְשָׁבָה אֶל בֵּית אָבִיהָ כִּנְעוּרֶיהָ מִלֶּחֶם אָבִיהָ תֹּאכֵל וְכָל זָר לא יֹאכַל בּוֹ). These verses mean exactly as they say (הָנֵי קְרָאֵי כְּמַשְׁמָעָן). However, the words of Orayta are concealed words (אֲבָל מִלִּין דְּאוֹרַיְיתָא מִלִּין סְתִימִין אִינּוּן). And how numerous are the concealed words of wisdom hidden in every single word of Orayta (וְכַמָּה אִינּוּן מִלִּין דְּחָכְמְתָא דִּסְתִּימִין בְּכָל מִלָּה וּמִלָּה דְּאוֹרַיְיתָא)!
They are made known to wise ones (וְאִשְׁתְּמוֹדְעָן, אִינּוּן לְגַבֵּי חַכִּימִין) who understand the paths of Orayta (דְּיַדְעִין אָרְחִין דְּאוֹרַיְיתָא). For the Orayta’s words are not like the words of a dream (דְּהָא אוֹרַיְיתָא לָאו מִלִּין דְּחֶלְמָא אִינּוּן), given over merely to whoever interprets them (דְּקָא אִתְמָסְרָן לְמַאן דְּפָשַׁר לוֹן), to follow after one’s mouth (וְאִתְמַשְּׁכָן בָּתַר פּוּמָא). Yet even so, words of a dream need interpretation according to their ways (וְעִם כָּל דָּא אִצְטְרִיכוּ לְמִפְשַׁר לוֹן לְפוּם אָרְחוֹי). And if dream words need interpretation according to their ways (וּמַה אִי מִלִּין דְּחֶלְמָא אִצְטְרִיכוּ לְמִפְשַׁר לוֹן לְפוּם אָרְחוֹי), how much more so the words of Orayta (מִלִּין דְּאוֹרַיְיתָא), which are the delights of the Holy King (דְּאִינּוּן שַׁעֲשׁוּעִין דְּמַלְכָּא קַדִּישָׁא)! All the more must one walk in them on the true path (עַל אַחַת כַּמָּה וְכַמָּה דְּאִצְטְרִיכוּ לְמֵהָךְ בְּאֹרַח קְשׁוֹט בְּהוּ), as it is written (Hosea 14), "For the ways of Hashem are upright, etc." (כִּי יְשָׁרִים דַּרְכֵי יְיָ' וְגוֹ').

Mikdash Melekh on Zohar: “A beautiful maiden who has no eyes” (עוּלֵימְתָּא שַׁפִּירְתָּא דְּלֵית לָהּ עֵינִין). “Explanation: the Ari, of blessed memory, said that Ze’ir Anpin has twice one hundred and thirty, which are five Havayot of Chesed equal to one hundred and thirty, and five Havayot of Gevurah another one hundred and thirty” (פֵּירוּשׁ הָאָרִ״י ז״ל כִּי זְעֵיר אַנְפִּין יֵשׁ לוֹ ב׳ פְּעָמִים ק״ל שֶׁהֵם ה׳ הֲוָיוֹת דְּחֶסֶד גִּימַטְרִיָּא ק״ל וְה׳ הֲוָיוֹת דְּגְבוּרָה ק״ל אֲחֵרִים). “And they are two eyes, for ‘eye’ has the numerical value one hundred and thirty” (וְהֵם ב׳ עֵינַיִם כִּי עַיִן גִּימַטְרִיָּא ק״ל). “But Malchut has only five Havayot of Gevurot, which equal one hundred and thirty, one eye” (אֲבָל הַמַּלְכוּת אֵין לָהּ אֶלָּא ה׳ הֲוָיוֹת דְּגְבוּרוֹת שֶׁהֵם גִּימַטְרִיָּא ק״ל עַיִן אַחַת). “And this is the meaning of ‘she has no eyes,’ meaning not two eyes” (וְזֶה שֶׁאָמַר דְּלֵית לָהּ עֵינִין שְׁנַיִם).
Mikdash Melekh on Zohar: “In the discourse of Mishpatim, the Shekhinah is a beautiful maiden who has no eyes” (בְּסָבָא דְּמִשְׁפָּטִים הַשְּׁכִינָה עוּלֵימְתָּא שַׁפִּירְתָּא דְּלֵית לָהּ עֵינִין). “In Shaar haPesukim, daf 72, it explains the reason that she comes from the side of Yitzchak, in the secret of ‘and his eyes grew dim from seeing’” (בְּסֵפֶר שַׁעַר הַפְּסוּקִים דַּף ע״ב כָּתַב הַטַּעַם שֶׁהִיא מִסִּטְרָא דְּיִצְחָק קָא אָתְיָא בְּסוֹד וַתִּכְהֶין עֵינָיו מֵרְאֹת). “And the eyes within her are of great judgments” (וּבָעֵינַיִם שֶׁבָּהּ שֶׁל דִּינִים גְּדוֹלִים). “As mentioned above in the passage ‘turn your eyes away from me’” (כַּנַּ״ל בְּפָרָשַׁת הָסֵבִי עֵינַיִךְ מִנֶּגְדִּי). “And the judgments of the eyes descend to the chamber of merit, and from them are made the seventy Sanhedrin, ‘an eye for an eye,’ for there is the place of judgment and accounting” (וְהַדִּינִים דְּעֵינַיִן יֵשׁ יוֹרְדִים לְהֵיכַל זְכוּת וְנַעֲשִׂים מֵהֶם ע׳ סַנְהֶדְרִין עַיִן תַּחַת עַיִן שֶׁשָּׁם מְקוֹם הַדִּין וְהַחֶשְׁבּוֹן). “But in Atzilut she is a beautiful maiden without eyes” (אֲבָל בַּאֲצִילוּת הִיא עוּלֵימְתָּא שַׁפִּירְתָּא דְּלֵית לָהּ עֵינִין). “For all the judgments within her descend to Beri’ah” (כִּי כָּל הַדִּינִים שֶׁבָּהּ יוֹרְדִים לִבְרִיאָה). “And especially since it is known that the Mochin of Elohim of smallness descend to Beri’ah” (וּבִפְרָט שֶׁיָּדוּעַ שֶׁמוֹחִין דְּאֱלֹהִים דְּקַטְנוּת יוֹרְדִים לִבְרִיאָה). “And she remains in Atzilut entirely beautiful” (וְנִשְׁאֶרֶת בַּאֲצִילוּת כֻּלָּהּ יָפָה). “And the blemish of the Name Elohim is not in her” (וּמוּם שֵׁם אֱלֹהִים אֵין בָּהּ). “And the measure of the verse is: ‘your eyes,’ which are great judgments, ‘are pools in Cheshbon,’ pools meaning reservoirs that descend downward like flowing water to the chamber of merit” (וְזֶה שִׁעוּר הַכָּתוּב עֵינַיִךְ שֶׁהֵם דִּינִים גְּדוֹלִים הֵם בְּרֵכוֹת בְּחֶשְׁבּוֹן בְּרֵכוֹת לְשׁוֹן בְּרֵכָה שֶׁיוֹרְדוֹת לְמַטָּה כַּמַּיִם הַנִּגָּרִים אַרְצָה לְהֵיכַל זְכוּת). “The place of judgment and accounting” (מְקוֹם הַדִּין וְהַחֶשְׁבּוֹן). “And there is the gate of the many” (וְשָׁם הוּא שַׁעַר בַּת רַבִּים). “For in the world of Atzilut it is a private domain, ten high, the Name Mah, and its width is four letters of the Name Havayah” (כִּי בְּעוֹלָם הָאֲצִילוּת הוּא רְשׁוּת הַיָּחִיד גָּבוֹהַּ עֲשָׂרָה שֵׁם מ״ה וְרָחְבּוֹ ד׳ אוֹתִיּוֹת הֲוָיָ״ה). “Whereas the world of Beri’ah is where the Klipot begin, which is the domain of the many” (מַה שֶּׁאֵין כֵּן עוֹלָם הַבְּרִיאָה שָׁם מַתְחִילִים הַקְּלִיפּוֹת שֶׁהוּא רְשׁוּת הָרַבִּים). “For in the chamber of merit there is the place of judgment and accounting, and according to what is decided there, God forbid, the Klipot take strength from those Gevurot to carry out all the decrees that are decided there” (שֶׁבְּהֵיכַל זְכוּת שָׁם מְקוֹם הַדִּין וְהַחֶשְׁבּוֹן וְכְפִי אֲשֶׁר נִפְסַק שָׁם לְרָעָה חַס וְשָׁלוֹם אָז לֹקְחִים הַקְּלִיפּוֹת כֹּחַ מֵהַגְּבוּרוֹת הָהֵם לְבַצֵּעַ כָּל הַפְּסָקֵי דִּינִים). “Whereas in Atzilut there is sweetening of judgment” (מַה שֶּׁאֵין כֵּן בַּאֲצִילוּת יֵשׁ שָׁם מִתּוּק הַדִּין). “And the completion of the verse is in this manner, as explained there at length” (וְתַשְׁלוּם הַפָּסוּק עַל דֶּרֶךְ זֶה עַיֵּן שָׁם בְּאֹרֶךְ).
Mikdash Melekh on Zohar 2:95a:12 ()“A beautiful maiden who has no eyes” (עוּלֵימְתָּא שַׁפִּירְתָּא דְּלֵית לָהּ עֵינִין). “In Etz Chaim daf 71, the secret of ‘the table in the north and the menorah in the south’ is Leah and Rachel” (בְּעֵץ חַיִּים דַּף ע״א סוֹד מַה שֶּׁנֶּאֱמַר שֻׁלְחָן בַּצָּפוֹן מְנוֹרָה בַּדָּרוֹם הֵם לֵאָה וְרָחֵל). “The hidden menorah is Leah, who is the concealed world, whose judgments are strong, and we sweeten her in the south” (מְנוֹרָתָא דְּסְתִימָא הִיא לֵאָה שֶׁהִיא עָלְמָא דְּאִתְכַּסְיָא שֶׁדִּינֶיהָ תַּקִּיפִין וַאֲנַחְנוּ מְמַתְּקִים אוֹתָהּ בַּדָּרוֹם). “And it is known that the eyes of Leah are soft and beautiful because the Netzach and Hod of Imma shine in her eyes” (וְנוֹדָע כִּי עֵינֵי לֵאָה רַכּוֹת יָפוֹת לְפִי שֶׁמְּאִירִים בָּהּ בְּעֵינֶיהָ נֵצַח וְהוֹד דְּאִימָּא). “But Rachel, who is the beautiful maiden, does not receive the Netzach and Hod of Imma, and therefore she is alluded to by the table” (מַה שֶּׁאֵין כֵּן רָחֵל שֶׁהִיא עוּלֵימְתָּא שַׁפִּירְתָּא וְכוֹ׳ כִּי אֵין מַגִּיעִים אֵלֶיהָ נֵצַח וְהוֹד דְּאִימָּא וְלָכֵן הִיא רְמוּזָה לַשֻּׁלְחָן). “The table has the numerical value of twice Tzedakah, and Tzedakah is Malchut in its two aspects, the aspect of Leah within it and the aspect of Rachel within it” (שֻׁלְחָן גִּימַטְרִיָּא ב׳ פְּעָמִים צְדָקָה וּצְדָקָה הִיא מַלְכוּת בִּשְׁתֵּי בְחִינוֹתֶיהָ בְּחִינַת לֵאָה שֶׁבָּהּ וּבְחִינַת רָחֵל שֶׁבָּהּ). “And therefore it is in the north, for it comes from the side of the menorah” (וְלָכֵן הוּא בַּצָּפוֹן דְּמִסִּטְרָא דְּמְנוֹרָה קָא אָתְיָא). “But Leah, although her judgments are strong, nevertheless the oil of the menorah is the Netzach and Hod of Abba included in the Netzach and Hod of Imma” (אֲבָל לֵאָה אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁדִּינֶיהָ תַּקִּיפִין מִכָּל מָקוֹם הַשֶּׁמֶן שֶׁל הַמְּנוֹרָה הוּא נֵצַח וְהוֹד דְּאַבָּא הַכְּלוּלִים בְּנֵצַח וְהוֹד דְּאִימָּא). “For the oil within the olive is the Netzach and Hod of Abba, and the olives themselves are the Netzach and Hod of Imma” (כִּי הַשֶּׁמֶן שֶׁבְּתוֹךְ הַזַּיִת הוּא נֵצַח וְהוֹד דְּאַבָּא וְהַזֵּיתִים עַצְמָם הֵם נֵצַח וְהוֹד דְּאִימָּא). “And it is possible that she is called ‘hidden’ because the illumination that comes to her is also hidden of all hidden, as the Rav arranged in the wording of the prayer ‘may it be the will from before the hidden of all hidden, the Ancient of all ancient, the hidden of all’” (וְאֶפְשָׁר שֶׁנִּקְרֵאת סְתִימָא מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהָאֲרָה הַבָּאָה אֵלֶיהָ הִיא גַּם כֵּן סְתִימָא דְּכָל סְתִימִין כְּדֶרֶךְ שֶׁסִּדֵּר הָרַב בִּלְשׁוֹן הַתְּפִלָּה יְהֵא רַעֲוָא מִן קֳדָם סְתִימָא דְּכָל סְתִימִין עַתִּיקָא דְּכָל עַתִּיקִין סְתִימָא דְּכוֹלָּא). “That is, the line of Ein Sof that enters into Adam Kadmon and illuminates all Atzilut and its illumination reaches Leah and Rachel” (דְּהַיְינוּ חוּט הָאֵין סוֹף הַנִּכְנָס לְתוֹךְ אָדָם קַדְמוֹן וּמֵאִיר בְּכָל אֲצִילוּת וּמַגִּיעַ הָאֲרָתוֹ עַד לֵאָה וְרָחֵל). “But since Leah’s judgments are strong, we must sweeten her at the root of the Chesed, which is the south, and for this reason she is called hidden, because the hidden of all illuminates in her” (אֶלָּא שֶׁלֵּאָה שֶׁדִּינֶיהָ תַּקִּיפִין אֲנַחְנוּ צְרִיכִים לְמַתְּקָהּ בְּשֹׁרֶשׁ הַחֶסֶד שֶׁהוּא הַדָּרוֹם וְעַל זֶה נִקְרֵאת סְתִימָא מִפְּנֵי שֶׁסְתִימָא דְּכֹלָּא נָהִיר בָּהּ).
