And what was the spring that departed from it It was the Vav that ascended until Ein Sof, which is the supernal Mazal That descended to it, and that Vav is Abba, to his place And afterward Abba raised all his offspring to his place (Some say: That Abba descended to them, to his son, and afterward Abba ascended from his son to his place [All this is superfluous (כל זה מיותר)]. That is the hour that endures for him - blessed is he for whom the hour endures and does not press him As the masters of the Mishnah have established: whoever presses the hour, the hour presses him And behold, Rabbi Pedat - the hour pressed him Kudsha Berikh Hu said to him: If you desire, I will destroy the world, and perhaps you will fall in the hour of sustenance He said to him, the Holy Luminary: All this, why He said to him: This is the great secret I have heard - that a man who comes in Gilgul is obligated to his Master before he comes into the world Even though he does many merits, the matter does not depend on his merit, for his Mazal causes it to him And that which He said: “If you desire, I will destroy the world, and perhaps you will fall in the hour of sustenance” (ומה דאמר אי בעית דאחריב לעלמא ואפשר דנפלת בשעתא דמזוני) - surely thus I have heard, that every Tzaddik has a world of his own (בודאי הכי שמענא דכל צדיקא וצדיקא אית ליה עולם בפני עצמו). And this is the body of man, which is called a small world And because of this it is said: “If you desire, I will destroy the world, and I will bring him in another body, and perhaps you will fall in the hour of sustenance” (ובגין דא אמר אי בעית דאחרביה לעלמא ואייתי ליה בגופא אחרא ואפשר דנפלת בשעתא דמזוני). He said to him: But it is written: “If he take him another wife, her food, her covering, and her onah he shall not diminish” (Exodus 21) And: “Lo, all these things does El, twice and thrice with a man” (Job 33) And: “And if he does not these three unto her, then she shall go out free, without money” (Exodus 21) He said to him: Surely, here is revealed the supernal secret As the masters of the Mishnah have established: a man’s wife is like his own body And it is found that she is his life - as it is written: “See life with the woman whom you love” (Ecclesiastes 9) “She is a tree of life to those who hold her” (Proverbs 3) And she is his sustenance - as it is written: “A land wherein you shall eat bread without poverty” (Deuteronomy 8) And from her - children, life, and sustenance

And corresponding to these Gilgulim are change of place and change of the name and change of action Change of place is in the manner of Kudsha Berikh Hu (שִׁנּוּי מָקוֹם כְּגַוְונָא דְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא), about whom it is said (Isaiah 26) “Behold Hashem goes forth from His place” (דְאִתְּמַר בֵּיהּ הִנֵּה יהו״ה יוֹצֵא מִמְּקוֹמוֹ). And when He goes forth He changes from judgment to mercy and from mercy to judgment As the masters of the Mishnah have established “Not as I am written am I read. In the World to Come which is His place He is written in Hashem and read in Hashem. In this world He is written in Hashem and read in Adonai” (כְּמָה דְאוּקְמוּהוּ מָארֵי מַתְנִיתִין לֹא כְשֶׁאֲנִי נִכְתָּב אֲנִי נִקְרָא, בָּעוֹלָם הַבָּא דְאִיהוּ אַתְרֵיהּ נִכְתָּב בְּיהו״ה וְנִקְרָא בְּיהו״ה, בָּעוֹלָם הַזֶּה נִכְתָּב בְּיהו״ה וְנִקְרָא בְּאדנ״י). This is change of place outside His place which is the World to Come In the World to Come there is no change As it is written (Malachi 3) “I Hashem have not changed” (הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב אֲנִי יהו״ה לֹא שָׁנִיתִי). He is written in the Name Hashem and read in the Name Hashem He is called Hashem mercy Outside His place He changes and is called Adonai and is called judgment And this is the secret “He stands from the throne of mercy and sits upon the throne of judgment” (וְדָא רָזָא עוֹמֵד מִכִּסֵּא רַחֲמִים וְיוֹשֵׁב עַל כִּסֵּא דִין).

Change of the name is MTZPTZ (שִׁנּוּי הַשֵּׁם דָּא מצפ״ץ), which is Hashem in ATBSH (דְּאִיהוּ בְּאַ״תְּ בַּ״שׁ יהו״ה). Change of action is Shabbat (שִׁנּוּי מַעֲשֶׂה דָא שַׁבָּת), which requires all “after the hand” (דְּצָרִיךְ כָּל כִּלְאַחַר יָד). Every Tzaddik “after the hand” which is Shekhinta (כֹל דְּאִיהוּ צַדִּיק אַחַר יָד דְּאִיהִי שְׁכִינְתָּא), this is change of action (דָא שִׁנּוּי מַעֲשֶׂה). And at the time when it is “after the hand” there is no bowing there For it is said about it “Everyone who kneels kneels at Blessed” (דְאִתְּמַר בֵּיהּ כָּל הַכּוֹרֵעַ כּוֹרֵעַ בְּבָרוּךְ). The goat at its time bows to it For when it is “after the hand” it becomes a tail Yet even with all this it is said “The goat at its time bows to it in its place, but outside its place be a tail to lions and not a head to foxes” (וְעִם כָּל דָּא דְאָמַר תַּעֲלָא בְעִדָּנֵיהּ סָגִיד לֵיהּ בְּאַתְרֵיהּ, אֲבָל חוּץ מֵאַתְרֵיהּ הֱוִי זָנָב לַאֲרָיוֹת וְאַל תְּהִי רֹאשׁ לַשּׁוּעָלִים).

For a complete Tzaddik, even though he descends from his level and becomes a tail to lions (דְּהָא צַדִּיק גָּמוּר אַף עַל גַּב דְּנָחִית מִדַּרְגֵּיהּ וְאִתְעֲבִיד זָנָב לַאֲרָיוֹת), about him it is said (Psalms 37) “I have not seen a Tzaddik forsaken” (עֲלֵיהּ אִתְּמַר לֹא רָאִיתִי צַדִּיק נֶעֱזָב). What is his tail? It is the thorn of the letter Dalet from Echad, which is the small Yod, the lower Shekhinta About him it is said (Proverbs 24) “For seven times the Tzaddik falls and rises” (עֲלֵיהּ אִתְּמַר כִּי שֶׁבַע יִפּוֹל צַדִּיק וָקָם).

Come and see the Gilgul of the letter Vav, which goes out in its hour About it is said: “Mazal of the hour causes” (דַּעֲלֵיהּ אִתְּמַר מַזָּל שָׁעָה גוֹרֵם). As the masters have established: “Not Mazal of the day causes, but Mazal of the hour causes” (כְּמָה דְאוּקְמוּהָ אֵין מַזָּל יוֹם גוֹרֵם אֶלָּא מַזָּל שָׁעָה גוֹרֵם).

Concerning Avraham, what is written of him when he came in Gilgul “And Avraham rose early in the morning to the place” (Bereshit 19) And in order to precede him, Yitzchak, what is written of him in Gilgul “And Yitzchak went out to meditate in the field towards evening” (Bereshit 24) He went out to her, to the field (נָפַק לְגַבָּהּ לְחַקְלָא), as it is said (Jeremiah 9): “Oh, that I had in the wilderness a lodging place of wayfaring men” (בְּגִין דְּאִתְּמַר בֵּיהּ מִי יִתְּנֵנִי בַמִּדְבָּר מְלוֹן אוֹרְחִים). One preceded to search her in the morning The other to search her in the evening

Ya’akov, what is written of him “And he met the place” (Bereshit 28) (וַיִּפְגַּע בַּמָּקוֹם). He encountered her (פָּגַע בָּהּ). Blessed is he who encounters her like Ya'akov (זַכָּאָה אִיהוּ מָאן דְּפָגַע כְּגוֹן יַעֲקֹב), for of him it is said: “And he lodged there” (Bereshit 28) (דַּעֲלֵיהּ אִתְּמַר וַיָּלֶן שָׁם). And that lodging is accompaniment Immediately when he aroused there: “And angels of Hashem encountered him” (Bereshit 32) And with all this, though he encountered her, he guarded her and did not unite with her until her Husband came And this is: “And he lodged there because the sun had set” (Bereshit 28) For his sake: “And the sun rose for him” (Bereshit 32) This is Moshe, who came with him in Gilgul, the Ruach of Moshe

And because of this, Ya'akov and Moshe stood in one level, in the Middle Column (וּבְגִין דָּא יַעֲקֹב וּמֹשֶׁה הֲווֹ קַיְימֵי בְּדַרְגָּא חֲדָא בְּעַמּוּדָא דְאֶמְצָעִיתָא), but this one in body and that one in Neshama (אֲבָל דָּא בְגוּפָא וְדָא בְנִשְׁמָתָא). And because of this there is no hour enduring for any man, for she is Shekhinta without her Husband And because of this, when the hour pressed Rabbi Pedat (וּבְגִין דָּא כַּד דְּחִיקַת לֵיהּ שַׁעִתָּא לְרַבִּי פְּדָת), and He said: “If you desire, I will destroy the world, and perhaps you will fall in the hour of sustenance” (וְאָמַר אִי בָּעִית דְּאַחְרְבֵיהּ לְעָלְמָא וְאֶפְשַׁר דִּנְפַלְתְּ בְּשַׁעִתָּא דִמְזוֹנֵי). And what is ‘perhaps’ (וְאוּלַי דִּנְפַלְתְּ מַאי וְאוּלַי)? Rather, “perhaps” means if Kudsha Berikh Hu desires, that you will fall in the hour of sustenance, for it is his Wife that acts And “perhaps” if her Husband desires, that she exists in what she does without permission of her Husband

And in this manner, there is no hour that endures, that Shekhinta endures for that man, unless he comes in Gilgul in that man of that hour And the secret of the matter is: “With this shall Aharon come into the Holy” (Leviticus 16) And without her Husband it is said: “And he shall not come at all times into the Holy” (Leviticus 16) And “the stranger that draws near shall be put to death” (Numbers 1) And there is no death except poverty And this “stranger” is not another strange blemished one, but a stranger from her Husband
