Primary textDaf 38a (דַּף ל״ח ע״א)

Sava arose and said to him: Rabbi, Rabbi (קָם הַהוּא סָבָא וְאָמַר לוֹ רַבִּי רַבִּי), with an oath upon you regarding this supernal hidden point (בְּאוֹמָאָה עֲלָךְ בְּהַאי נְקוּדָה טְמִירָא עִלָּאָה). Descend here to reveal the hidden mystery And not for my honor do I act (וְלָא לִיקָרָא דִילִי עֲבִידְנָא), but for the honor of the Shekhinta (אֶלָּא לִיקָרָא דִשְׁכִינְתָּא), to show forth the glory of this hidden, concealed point (לְאַחֲזָאָה יְקָרָא דְהַאי נְקוּדָה טְמִירָא גְנִיזָא), of which it is said: “And it is hidden from the eyes of all living” (דְאִתְּמַר בָּהּ וְנֶעִלְמָה מֵעֵינֵי כָל חָי) (Job 28). And concerning it, it is said: “A path no bird of prey knows…”

Meanwhile, behold, the Rabbi ascended above into the air (אַדְהָכִי הָא רַבִּי סָלִיק לְעִילָא בְאַוִּירָא), to receive permission from that point which is concealed there (לְנַטְלָא רְשׁוּ מֵהַהִיא נְקוּדָה דְאִיהִי גְנִיזָא תַמָּן). And behold, he descended in the pillar of fire (וְהָא קָא נָחִית בְּעַמּוּדָא דְאֶשָּׁא), which is the breath of the mouth (דְאִיהִי הֲבַל דְּפוּמָא). In it the living creatures run and return This is what is written: “And the living creatures ran and returned…” (Ezekiel 1). And he said: In the beginning, there - Bet

“Bereshit” - there, Bet (בְּרֵאשִׁית תַּמָּן בַּ״ת). And this Bet is a hidden point in the air Of her it is said: “Keep me as the apple of the eye” (עֲלָהּ אִתְּמַר שָׁמְרֵנִי כְּאִישׁוֹן בַּת עָיִן) (Psalms 17). She is surely concealed in the light (אִיהִי וַדַּאי גְּנִיזָא בְאוֹר), and in her the air was made (וּבָהּ אִתְעֲבִיד אַוִּיר). And because of her it is said: “And the angel of Hashem appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of the bush” (וּבְגִינָהּ אִתְּמַר וַיֵּרָא מַלְאַךְ יְהוָה אֵלָיו בְּלַבַּת אֵשׁ מִתּוֹךְ הַסְּנֶה) (Exodus 3). Five times the “bush” is mentioned (חָמֵשׁ זִמְנִין אַדְכִּיר סְנֶה), and five times “light” - they correspond to the work of Bereshit (וְחָמֵשׁ זִמְנִין אוֹר אִינוּן לְקִבְלַיְיהוּ בְעוֹבָדָא דִבְּרֵאשִׁית). And they are: “Let there be light, and there was light, the light that it was good, Elohim separated between the light, and Elohim called the light” (וְאִינוּן יְהִי אוֹר, וַיְהִי אוֹר, אֶת הָאוֹר כִּי טוֹב, וַיַּבְדֵּל אֱלֹהִים בֵּין הָאוֹר, וַיִּקְרָא אֱלֹהִים לָאוֹר) (Bereshit 1). And they are the five rectifications of the measure (וְאִינוּן חָמֵשׁ תִּקּוּנִין דְּמִדָּה), which correspond to: Kamatz, Tzere, Holam, Hiriq, Kubutz (דְאִינוּן לְקִבְלַיְיהוּ אָ אֵ אֹ אִ אֻ). And of them it is said: “Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand” - this is Chesed (Isaiah 40). “And measured the heavens with a span” - what is a span? This is Gevurah (וְשָׁמַיִם בַּזֶּרֶת תִּכֵּן מָאי זֶרֶת דָּא גְּבוּרָה). “And comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure” - this is the middle pillar, which is the third “And weighed the mountains in scales” - this is Netzach “And the hills in a balance” - this is Hod And these are in the secret of the letter Heh (וְאִינוּן בְּרָזָא דְאָת ה׳), for this point is measured in them with five points (דְּהַאי נְקוּדָה מָדִיד בְּהוֹן ה׳ נְקוּדִין).

She is that which emerges from the pure air (דְּאִיהִי דְּנָפִיק מִגּוֹ אַוִּירָא דַכְיָא), which is the supernal Keter (דְּאִיהוּ כֶתֶר עִלָּאָה). And because these five measurements are in the secret of the supernal Heh (וּבְגִין דְּאִלֵּין חָמֵשׁ מְדִידִין אִינוּן בְּרָזָא דְה׳ עִלָּאָה), it goes in them five hundred years between each one (אִיהוּ אָזִיל בְּהוֹן חֲמֵשׁ מְאָה שְׁנִין בֵּין כָּל חַד וְחַד). And the secret of the matter: “The Tree of Life - its journey is five hundred years” (וְרָזָא דְמִלָּה עִץ הַחַיִּים מַהֲלַךְ חֲמֵשׁ מֵאוֹת שָׁנָה). And between each and every one, five hundred years And the thickness of each one, five hundred years All of them ascend in a balance, five by five to every side And the secret of the matter: “And you shall make bars of acacia wood, five for the boards of the one side of the Mishkan, and five bars for the boards of the other side of the Mishkan, and five bars for the boards of the side of the Mishkan for the rear westward” (וְרָזָא דְמִלָּה וְעָשִׂיתָ בְרִיחִם עֲצֵי שִׁטִּים חֲמִשָּׁה לְקַרְשֵׁי צֶלַע הַמִּשְׁכָּן הָאֶחָד, וַחֲמִשָּׁה בְרִיחִם לְקַרְשֵׁי צֶלַע הַמִּשְׁכָּן הַשֵּׁנִית, וַחֲמִשָּׁה בְרִיחִים לְקַרְשֵׁי צֶלַע הַמִּשְׁכָּן לַיַּרְכָתַיִם יָמָּה) (Exodus 26). The “two sides” are the thighs of truth “Westward” - what is “westward”? This is the supernal Shekhinta (יָמָּה, מָאי יָמָּה דָא שְׁכִינְתָּא עִלָּאָה), of which it is said: “And the likeness over the heads of the living creature was an expanse” (הַהוּא דְאִתְּמַר בֵּיהּ וּדְמוּת עַל רָאשֵׁי הַחַיָּה רָקִיעַ) (Ezekiel 1). And this is what they established: “There is no separation between the upper waters and the lower waters except as the breadth of a hair” (וְאִיהוּ דְאוּקְמוּהוּ אֵין בֵּין מַיִם הָעִלְיוֹנִים לַמַּיִם הַתַּחְתּוֹנִים אֶלָּא כִּמְלֹא נִימָא). And concerning this thread it is said: “One sovereignty does not touch another sovereignty even as the breadth of a hair” (וְהַאי נִימָא עֲלֵיהּ אִתְּמַר אֵין מַלְכוּת נוֹגַעַת בַּחֲבֵרְתָּהּ אֲפִילוּ כִּמְלֹא נִימָא). And in this Kudsha Berikh Hu is exacting with the Righteous even as a hair’s breadth And this thread is the thread that reminds of the sign of the covenant of circumcision And the covenant is this thread Woe to those who separate the sign of the covenant between water and water, and prevent seed from him (וַוי לוֹן מָאן דְּאַפְרִישׁ אוֹת בְּרִית בֵּין מַיִם לַמַּיִם, וּמָנַע זַרְעָא מִנֵּיהּ), for they return the world to Tohu vaVohu (דְּאַחְזַר עָלְמָא לְתֹהוּ וָבֹהוּ). And the secret of the matter: “He did not create it a waste, He formed it to be inhabited” (וְרָזָא דְמִלָּה לֹא תֹהוּ בְרָאָהּ לָשֶׁבֶת יְצָרָהּ וַדַּאי) (Isaiah 48). The upper waters are the Written Orayta (מַיִם עִלְיוֹנִים אוֹרַיְיתָא דְבִכְתָב), the lower waters are the Oral Orayta (מַיִם תַּחְתּוֹנִים אוֹרַיְיתָא דִבְעַל פֶּה). The thread that is between them is Yesod (נִימָא דְאִיהוּ בֵין תַּרְוַיְיהוּ דָא יְסוֹד), which is the secret of Orayta (דְּאִיהוּ רָזָא דְאוֹרַיְיתָא), and it is the foundation and root of both (וְאִיהוּ יְסוֹדָא וְעִקָּרָא דְתַרְוַיְיהוּ). And one who withholds the secret of the root of the two Torahs (וּמָאן דְּמָנַע רָזָא דְעִקָּרָא דִתְרֵי תוֹרוֹת), it is as if he returns the world to Tohu vaVohu (כְּאִלּוּ אַהְדַּר עָלְמָא לְתֹהוּ וָבֹהוּ). And these are those who say there is no Orayta except its plain meaning (וְאִלֵּין אִינוּן דְּאָמְרִין דְּלָא אוֹרַיְיתָא אֶלָּא כִּפְשָׁטָה), and that there is no other secret in it (וְלֵית בָּהּ רָזָא אָחֳרָא). And these are two Partzufin

This is the Garden of Orders, of which it is said: “A locked garden is my sister, my bride” (אִיהוּ גַ״ן סְדָרִים דְּאִתְּמַר בָּהּ גַּן נָעוּל אֲחוֹתִי כַלָּה) (Song of Songs 4). “A locked garden” - from the side of Mem, closed And Vav is locked in the six days of the week This is what is written: “It shall be shut the six working days” (הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב יִהְיֶה סָגוּר שֵׁשֶׁת יְמֵי הַמַּעֲשֶׂה) (Ezekiel 46). “But on the day of Shabbat it shall be opened” (וּבְיוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת יִפָּתֵחַ) (ibid.). And on Shabbat, so that it not be as one who locks a door before borrowers (וּבְשַׁבָּת בְּגִין דְּלָא תְהֵא כְּנוֹעֵל דֶּלֶת בִּפְנֵי לָוִוין), of whom it is said: “Borrow upon Me, and I will repay” (דְּאִתְּמַר בְּהוּ לְווּ עָלַי וַאֲנִי פוֹרֵעַ). She is opened toward them, who are the additional Neshamot
