Chapter Eighteen (פֶּרֶק שְׁמוֹנָה עָשָׂר)

Before Ein Sof sent forth His shefa below (קוֹדֶם אֲשֶׁר שָׁלַח אֵין־סוֹף שֶׁפַעוֹ לְמַטָּה), Ein Sof inserted the first three Sefirot — Keter, Chokhmah, Binah — one within the other like this (הִכְנִיס אֵין־סוֹף ג׳ סְפִירוֹת רִאשׁוֹנוֹת: כֶּתֶר, חָכְמָה, בִּינָה, זוֹ בְּתוֹךְ זוֹ כַּזֶּה: כח״ב).

In order that they not be broken, and each one help its fellow (כְּדֵי שֶׁלֹּא יִשָּׁבֵּרוּ וְאִישׁ אֶת רֵעֵהוּ יַעְזֹרוּ), afterward Ein Sof, blessed be He, sent forth a great and exceedingly abundant shefa downward (אַחַר כָּךְ שָׁלַח אֵין־סוֹף יִתְבָּרַךְ, שֶׁפַע רַב גָּדוֹל מְאֹד לְמַטָּה), and Keter received it at the outset (וְקִבֵּל הַכֶּתֶר לְכַתְּחִלָּה), and it filled him and overflowed him according to what he was able to contain (וּמִלֵּא אוֹתוֹ וְגִדֵּשׁ אוֹתוֹ כְּפִי מַה שֶּׁיָּכוֹל לְהַכִּיל). And since this shefa was too great to be contained (וּבְהִיוֹת הַשֶּׁפַע הַזֶּה גָּדוֹל מֵהַכִּיל), Keter took enough to fill itself for an Ohr Penimi (לָקַח הַכֶּתֶר דַּי מִלּוּאוֹ לְאוֹר פְּנִימִי), and the remainder went downward and surrounded him and became an Ohr Makif to Keter (וְהַשְּׁאָר הָלַךְ וְיָרַד סְבִיבוֹתָיו וְנַעֲשָׂה אוֹר מַקִּיף לַכֶּתֶר). And when it entered into Keter, it entered from above through his head (וּכְשֶׁנִּכְנַס לַכֶּתֶר נִכְנַס לְמַעְלָה דֶּרֶךְ רֹאשׁוֹ), and the analogy for this is a small vessel into which a large quantity of water is poured (וְהַמָּשָׁל בָּזֶה לִכְלִי קָטָן שֶׁזּוֹרְקִין בּוֹ מַיִם הַרְבֵּה), that which it can contain enters it (מַה שֶּׁיָּכוֹל לְהַכִּיל נִכְנַס בּוֹ), and the rest falls around it and covers it (וְהַשְּׁאָר נוֹפֵל סְבִיבוֹתָיו וּמְכַסֶּה אוֹתוֹ). And Keter could only receive it from a distance (וְלֹא יָכֹל כֶּתֶר לְקַבְּלוֹ כִּי אִם בְּרִיחוּק מָקוֹם), as I will explain (כַּאֲשֶׁר אֲבָאֵר), because it is close to Ein Sof (מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהוּא קָרוֹב לְאֵין־סוֹף). By way of analogy, like a person who takes two vessels in two hands and pours one liquid from this vessel into the other at a great distance (דֶּרֶךְ מָשָׁל כְּמוֹ הָאָדָם הַנּוֹטֵל שְׁנֵי כֵּלִים בִּשְׁתֵּי יָדָיו וְשׁוֹפֵךְ מַשְׁקֶה אֶחָד מִכְּלִי זֶה לִכְּלִי אַחֵר הָרָחוֹק מְאֹד), all that can be transmitted from the right hand to the left enters through a thin pipe (כָּל מַה שֶּׁיָּכוֹל לְהַרְחִיק מִיָּד יָמִין אֶל יָד שְׂמֹאל נִכְנָס בְּסוֹד צִנּוֹר דַּק), so too here (כָּךְ בְּכָאן), due to the nearness of Keter it required this thin pipe, in the secret of distant space (מִכֹּחַ קְרֹבַת הַכֶּתֶר הֻצְרְכָה לְצִנּוֹר דַּק זֶה בְּסוֹד רִיחוּק מָקוֹם).
