Chapter Forty-Nine (פֶּרֶק אַרְבָּעִים וְתִשְׁעָה)

The letter Shin is a letter of truth (אוֹת הַשִּׁין הִיא אוֹת שֶׁל אֱמֶת), that is, just as in the world of Tikkun, Chokhmah is on one side, Binah on the other side, and Da‘at in the middle (דְּהַיְנוּ, כְּמוֹ שֶׁהָעוֹלָם הַתִּקּוּן: חָכְמָה מִכָּאן, בִּינָה מִכָּאן, דַּעַת בָּאֶמְצַע), and likewise Chesed is on one side, Gevurah on the other, and Tiferet in the middle (וְכֵן חֶסֶד מִכָּאן, גְּבוּרָה מִכָּאן, ת״ת בָּאֶמְצַע), so too is the letter Shin - three points, one from here, one from there, and one in the middle (כֵּן אוֹת הַשִּׁין ג׳ נְקֻדוֹת: אַחַת מִכָּאן, וְאַחַת מִכָּאן, וְאַחַת בָּאֶמְצַע). And the letter Shin - from it the world was created (וְאוֹת הַשִּׁין מִמֶּנָּה נִבְרָא הָעוֹלָם), for it is the Name Shaddai who said to His world: "Enough" (שֶׁהִיא שֵׁם שַׁדַּי, הָאוֹמֵר לְעוֹלָמוֹ: דַּי). And know that from these three points, a line emerged from each of them (וְדַע שֶׁאֵלּוּ הַג׳ נְקֻדוֹת, יָצָא מִכָּל אֶחָד מֵהֶם קָו), in such a way that there were three lines (בְּאֹפֶן שֶׁהָיוּ ג׳ קְוֵים), and since these lines are in the mystery of the scale (וּלְהִיוֹת שֶׁאֵלּוּ הַקְּוִים הֵם בְּסוֹד מְתֶקְלָא), they must be joined together (צָרִיךְ שֶׁיִּהְיוּ מְחוּבָּרִים יַחַד), just as Netzach and Hod are joined in Yesod (כְּמוֹ שֶׁנֶּצַח וְהוֹד מְחוּבָּרִים בְּיְסוֹד), so too these three must be joined together (כֵּן אֵלּוּ הַג׳ צָרִיךְ שֶׁיִּהְיוּ מְחוּבָּרִים יַחַד). But their joining is in this way (אֲבָל חִבּוּרָם הוּא בְּזֶה הָאֹפֶן): the right one, when it extended like a Nun Sofit and then folded like a bent Nun (שֶׁהַיְּמָנִי כְּשֶׁנִּתְפַּשֵּׁט כְּמוֹ ן׳ וְנִתְקַפֵּל כְּמוֹ נ כְּפוּפָה), it folded toward the line close to it (נִתְקַפֵּל לִצַּד הַקָּו הַקָּרוֹב אֵלָיו), and likewise the left line (וְכֵן הַקָּו שֶׁל שְׂמֹאל). But the line in the middle found no place to fold - neither to the right nor to the left (וְהַקָּו שֶׁבָּאֶמְצַע לֹא מָצָא מָקוֹם לְהִתְקַפֵּל לֹא לִצַּד יָמִין וְלֹא לִצַּד שְׂמֹאל), and it contracted within itself (נִתְקַמֵּץ בְּתוֹכוֹ), and was compressed between the two aforementioned Nuns (וְנִתְכּוֹוֵץ בֵּין שְׁתֵּי הַנּוּנִין הַנִּזְכָּרוֹת). And therefore, the point of connection of the middle line is thicker than the others (וְלָזֶה מְקוֹם הַחִבּוּר שֶׁל הַקָּו הָאֶמְצָעִי הוּא יוֹתֵר עָב מֵאֲחֵרִים), and for this they said that the form of the Shin is: two Nuns and a Vav between them (וְלָזֶה אָמְרוּ שֶׁצוּרַת הַשִּׁין הוּא: נ׳ כִּי כֵן הוּא תְּרֵין נוּנִין וְוָ בֵּינֵיהוּ).
