Chapter One (פֶּרֶק רִאשׁוֹן)
he light of the Garment would extend and spread without any hindrance (אוֹר הַמַּלְבּוּשׁ הָיָה הוֹלֵךְ וּמִתְפַּשֵּׁט בְּלִי שׁוּם מְנִיעָה), and would fill the cavity of the circle of the supernal Tehiru (וּמְמַלֵּא חָלַל הֶעָגוֹל שֶׁל טְהִירוּ עִלָּאָה), from the top of the circle that touches His Essence, may He be blessed, above (מִן רֹאשׁ הֶעָגוֹל שֶׁנוֹגֵעַ בְּעַצְמוּתוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ לְמַעְלָה), until after the place of the seven lands (עַד אַחַר מָקוֹם ז׳ אֲרָצוֹת), from which it returns to be Ein Sof, blessed be He (אֲשֶׁר מִשָּׁם חוֹזֵר לִהְיוֹת אֵין סוֹף בָּרוּךְ הוּא), and touches His Essence, may He be blessed, which is below (וְנוֹגֵעַ בְּעַצְמוּתוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ אֲשֶׁר לְמַטָּה), and likewise at the walls of the circle (וְכֵן בְּכָתְלֵי הֶעָגוֹל). And about this it is said: “Behold, this one stands behind our wall, observing through the windows” (Song of Songs 2:9) (וְעָלָיו נֶאֱמַר: הִנֵּה זֶה עוֹמֵד אַחַר כַּתְלֵנוּ מַשְׁגִּיחַ מִן־הַחַלּוֹנוֹת), which are five windows, and they are five aspects of the Havayah (שֶׁהֵם ה׳ חַלּוֹנוֹת וְהֵם ה׳ בְּחִינוֹת הַהוָיָה), that is, five Partzufim (דְּהַיְינוּ ה׳ פַּרְצוּפִים), and with the upper tip of the Yod they are five windows (וְעִם הַקּוֹץ הָעֶלְיוֹן שֶׁל הַיּו״ד הֵם ה׳ חַלּוֹנוֹת), which from ten divide into five Chasadim and five Gevurot, as is known (אֲשֶׁר מֵעֶשֶׂר נֶחְלָקִים לַחֲמִשָּׁה חֲסָדִים וַחֲמִשָּׁה גְּבוּרוֹת כְּנוֹדָע). And the five Chasadim are the windows and the channels of the heavens, which drip forth Chokhmah (וְהַחֲמִשָּׁה חֲסָדִים הֵם הַחַלּוֹנוֹת וַאֲרוּבּוֹת הַשָּׁמַיִם, הַנּוֹזְלִים חָכְמָה), and “peering through the lattices” - that is, five lattices (וּמֵצִיץ מִן הַחֲרַכִּים דְּהַיְינוּ ה׳ חֲרָכִים), which are from the five Gevurot among the ten Partzufim (שֶׁהוּא מִן ה׳ גְּבוּרוֹת שֶׁבְּעֲשֶׂרֶת הַפַּרְצוּפִים), from the expression “Ketina tore sacks” (Berakhot 46a) (מלשון: קְטִינָא חָרִיךְ שָׂקֵי), and they are not as open as windows (וְהֵם אֵינָם כָּל כָּךְ פְּתוּחִים כְּמוֹ חַלּוֹנוֹת). And the end of the light of the Garment was so bright and pure, almost like its beginning (וְהָיָה סוֹף אוֹרוֹ שֶׁל הַלְּבוּשׁ כָּל כָּךְ בָּהִיר וְזַךְ כִּמְעַט כְּמוֹ תְּחִלָּתוֹ), and this was not the intent of the supernal Emanator (וְלֹא הָיְתָה כָּךְ כַּוָּנַת הַמַּאֲצִיל הָעֶלְיוֹן), but rather to come to a diminution and descent of levels (אֶלָּא לָבוֹא אֶל פְּחִיתוּת וִירִידַת הַמַּדְרֵגוֹת), for the ultimate purpose of the creation of man (לִתְכֵּלֶת כַּוָּנַת בְּרִיאַת הָאָדָם), and there was also no space available for the existence of the worlds (וְלֹא הָיָה גַּם כֵּן מָקוֹם פָּנוּי לַעֲמִידַת הָעוֹלָמוֹת), because the Garment filled all (כִּי הַלְּבוּשׁ הָיָה מְמַלֵּא הַכֹּל). Therefore, Kudsha Berikh Hu elevated the light of the lower half of the Garment behind the upper half (לָכֵן הֶעֱלָה קב״ה אוֹר חֲצִי הַלְּבוּשׁ הַתַּחְתּוֹן אֲחוֹרֵי חֲצִי הָעֶלְיוֹן), with its Names, its vitality, and its soul (עִם שְׁמוֹתָיו וְחַיּוּתוֹ וּנְשָׁמָתוֹ), in order to clear space for the existence of the worlds (כְּדֵי לְפַנּוֹת מָקוֹם לַעֲמִידַת הָעוֹלָמוֹת). And the space of the lower half of the Garment remained empty of the light of the Garment (וְנִשְׁאַר מָקוֹם חֲצִי הַמַּלְבּוּשׁ הַתַּחְתּוֹן פָּנוּי מֵאוֹר הַלְּבוּשׁ), but its imprint remained in its place (אֲבָל רִשּׁוּמוֹ נִשְׁאָר בִּמְקוֹמוֹ), in the secret of: “The Shekhinta did not depart until it left a mark” (בְּסוֹד: לֹא זָזָה שְׁכִינְתָא עַד שֶׁעָשְׂתָה רוֹשֶׁם). (Yonat Elem, chapter 1 (יוֹנַת אֵלֶם פֶּרֶק א׳), and likewise in Leit (וְכֵן לֵיֵט), and this expression appears almost exclusively in the writings of Rabbi Menachem Azariah of Fano in many places (וְהַבִּיטּוּי מוֹפִיעַ כִּמְעַט בְּלְבַד בִּכְתָבֵי הָרְמַ״ע מִפָּאנוֹ בִּמְקוֹמוֹת רַבִּים). And this Garment is called Shekhinah (וְהַלְּבוּשׁ הַזֶּה נִקְרָא שְׁכִינְה), meaning: the place in which Y–H dwells in the front and V–H in the back (רָצָה לוֹמַר: מָקוֹם שֶׁשׁוֹכֵן י״ה בַּפָּנִים וְו״ה בָּאֲחוֹרַיִים).
