Chapter Ten (פֶּרֶק עֲשִׂירִי)
And because the Chokhmah within Keter also spread forth and became tenfold as well in the secret of Metakla [balance] (וּלְהִיוֹת שֶׁגַּם חָכְמָה שֶׁבַּכֶּתֶר נִתְפַּשְּׁטָה וְנַעֲשֵׂת בַּת עֶשֶׂר גַּם כֵּן בְּסוֹד מַתְקְלָא), and became a Parsah [barrier], namely a covering (וְנַעֲשֵׂית פַּרְסָא דְּהַיְנוּ מְכַסֶּה), and enclothes the seven lower Sefirot of the Malkhut within this Keter (וּמַלְבֶּשֶׁת לְשִׁבְעָה אַחֲרוֹנוֹת שֶׁל מַלְכוּת שֶׁבַּכֶּתֶר זוֹ), and the first three Sefirot of this Malkhut are called Reisha DeLa Ityada [the Unknowable Head] (וְהַשָּׁלֹשׁ רִאשׁוֹנוֹת שֶׁל מַלְכוּת זוֹ נִקְרָאִים רֵישָׁא דְלָא אִתְיְדַע), and this Chokhmah, the Metakla [balance] within it, became a garment for the Malkhut from outside (וְהַחָכְמָה זוֹ הַמַּתְקְלָא שֶׁבָּהּ נַעֲשֵׂית מַלְבּוּשׁ לַמַּלְכוּת מִבַּחוּץ). And just as the garment of a human being does not cover the head (וּכְמוֹ שֶׁמַּהַלְּבוּשׁ שֶׁל אָדָם אֵינוֹ מְכַסֶּה הָרֹאשׁ), so too this garment of Chokhmah does not cover the Malkhut except from the arms and below (כָּךְ הַמַּלְבּוּשׁ הַזֶּה שֶׁל חָכְמָה אֵינָהּ מְכַסָּה לַמַּלְכוּת כִּי אִם מִזְּרוֹעוֹת וּלְמַטָּה), namely from Chesed and below (דְּהַיְנוּ מֵחֶסֶד וּלְמַטָּה). And afterward the Binah within Keter also became in the secret of Metakla [balance] (וְאַחַר כָּךְ בִּינָה שֶׁבַּכֶּתֶר נַעֲשֵׂת בְּסוֹד מַתְקְלָא גַּם הִיא), and spread downward (וְנִתְפַּשְּׁטָה עַד לְמַטָּה), and the legs of Ein terminate equally with the legs of Arich (וְרַגְלֵי אֵין מִסְתַּיְּמִין בְּשָׁוֶה עִם רַגְלֵי אֲרִיךְ), and this Binah covered this Chokhmah from Keter and below (וְכִסְּתָה הַבִּינָה זוֹ לַחָכְמָה זוֹ מִכֶּתֶר וּלְמַטָּה), but the third of the Keter itself of the Chokhmah remained revealed (אֲבָל שְׁלִישׁ הַכֶּתֶר עַצְמוֹ שֶׁל חָכְמָה נִשְׁאַר מְגוּלֶּה). And do not wonder (וְאַל תִּתְמַהּ), behold every thing that enclothes its companion enclothes only from its head and below (הֲלֹא כָּל דָּבָר הַמַּלְבִּישׁ אֶת חֲבֵירוֹ אֵינוֹ מַלְבִּישׁ כִּי אִם מֵרֹאשׁוֹ וּלְמַטָּה), therefore it is revealed as stated (לָכֵן הוּא מְגוּלֶּה כָּאָמוּר), if so why did Binah enclothe Chokhmah from below upward until her Keter (אִם כֵּן לָמָּה הִלְבִּישָׁה בִּינָה לַחָכְמָה מִמַּטָּה לְמַעְלָה עַד הַכֶּתֶר שֶׁלָּהּ), it follows that also the Chokhmah, Binah, Da’at, which is the head, was covered (נִמְצָא שֶׁגַּם חָכְמָה וּבִינָה וָדַעַת שֶׁהוּא הָרֹאשׁ הָיָה מְכוּסֶּה)?
The answer is (תְּשׁוּבָה): know (דַּע), because this enclothing whereby the Chokhmah enclothes the Binah is from within (לְפִי שֶׁזֶּה הַהִתְלַבְּשׁוּת שֶׁהַחָכְמָה מַלְבֶּשֶׁת לְבִינָה הוּא מִבִּפְנִים), namely in the secret of Ohr Penimi [Inner Light] within her, giving her vitality (כְּלוֹמַר בְּסוֹד אוֹר פְּנִימִי בְּתוֹכָהּ שֶׁנּוֹתֶנֶת לָהּ חַיּוּת), and when we say that Binah enclothes Chokhmah (וּמַה שֶּׁאֲנַחְנוּ אוֹמְרִים שֶׁבִּינָה מַלְבֶּשֶׁת לַחָכְמָה), it is because Binah appears outwardly and appears to our eyes as though Binah enclothes Chokhmah (לְפִי שֶׁבִּינָה נִרְאֶה לַחוּץ וְנִרְאֶה לְעֵינֵינוּ כְּאִלּוּ בִּינָה מַלְבֶּשֶׁת לַחָכְמָה), but in truth she is only a covering for Chokhmah (וּבֶאֱמֶת אֵינָהּ כִּי אִם מְכַסֶּה לַחָכְמָה). Meaning (כְּלוֹמַר), that the Chokhmah is included within the Binah (שֶׁהַחָכְמָה נִכְלֶלֶת בְּתוֹךְ הַבִּינָה), therefore the Binah covered the Chokhmah from her head until her feet, until the Keter (לָזֶה הָיְתָה מְכַסָּה הַבִּינָה מֵרֹאשָׁהּ וְעַד רַגְלֶיהָ לַחָכְמָה עַד הַכֶּתֶר), and even the Keter of the Chokhmah would not have remained revealed (וַאֲפִלּוּ הַכֶּתֶר שֶׁל הַחָכְמָה לֹא [הָיָה] נִשְׁאַר מְגוּלֶּה), except only (אֶלָּא רַק), because the stature of Binah is shorter than the stature of Chokhmah (מִפְּנֵי שֶׁקוֹמָתָהּ שֶׁל בִּינָה יוֹתֵר קְצָרָה מִקּוֹמַת חָכְמָה), because she is the aspect of the female (מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהִיא בְּחִינַת נְקֵבָה). Nevertheless (עַל כָּל פָּנִים), even though she is called Yechidah [Singular One] (אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁנִּקְרֵאת יְחִידָה), and I have already told you this reason in its place, why she is called Yechidah and not Yachid (וּכְבָר אָמַרְתִּי לְךָ הַטַּעַם הַזֶּה בִּמְקוֹמוֹ לָמָּה נִקְרֵאת יְחִידָה וְלֹא יָחִיד), because she is the aspect of the female (מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהִיא בְּחִינַת נְקֵבָה), nevertheless regarding this matter she is not called female, whose secret is judgment (אֶלָּא לְעִנְיַן זֶה אֵינָהּ נִקְרֵאת נְקֵבָה שֶׁסּוֹדָהּ דִּין), and here no judgment whatsoever is visible (וְכָאן אֵין דִּין כְּלָל נִרְאֶה), because all are sweetened (כִּי כּוּלָּם נִמְתָּקִים). And the true reason is (וְהָאֱמֶת הַטַּעַם הוּא), that every stature of the companion beneath it possesses vessels smaller in quantity than the vessels of the companion above it (שֶׁכָּל קוֹמָה שֶׁל חֲבֵירוֹ שֶׁתַּחְתָּיו יוֹתֵר קָטָן כַּמּוּת כֵּלָיו מִכְּלֵי חֲבֵירוֹ שֶׁעָלָיו), namely the lower vessel in comparison to the upper vessel (חַיֵּינוּ כְּלִי הַתַּחְתּוֹן מִכְּלֵי הָעֶלְיוֹן). Therefore (לָכֵן), also the Malkhut of Adam Kadmon is so great (גַּם הַמַּלְכוּת דְּאָדָם קַדְמוֹן הִיא כָּל כָּךְ גְּדוֹלָה), that Ein and Arich are unable to grasp all her vessels completely (עַד שֶׁאֵין וַאֲרִיךְ אֵינָם יְכוֹלִים לְתָפְסָם כֵּלֶיהָ מִכֹּל וָכֹל), and they left her Keter, Chokhmah, Binah, namely her Reisha DeLa Ityada [the Unknowable Head], revealed (וְהִנִּיחוּ כח״ב שֶׁלָּהּ דְּהַיְנוּ רֵישָׁא דְלָא אִתְיְדַע שֶׁלָּהּ מְגוּלֶּה), because they were unable to grasp them, namely the Keter, Chokhmah, Binah (לְבִלְתִּי יְכוֹלֶת לָהֶם לִתְפּוֹס אוֹתָם [כח״ב]), because of their smallness, namely of Ein and Arich (מִפְּנֵי קְטַנּוּתָם [שֶׁל אֵין וַאֲרִיךְ]). Even though she is the aspect of the female (אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁהִיא בְּחִינַת נְקֵבָה), and even though she is somewhat concealed because she is the Malkhut of Adam Kadmon (וְאַף עַל פִּי שֶׁהִיא קְצָת נֶעְלָם מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהִיא מַלְכוּת אָדָם קַדְמוֹן), and just as he, namely Adam Kadmon, is concealed and he is male (וּכְמוֹ שֶׁהוּא [אָדָם קַדְמוֹן] נֶעְלָם וְהוּא זָכָר), his Malkhut is also male (מַלְכוּת שֶׁלּוֹ הוּא גַּם כֵּן זָכָר), and the reason of the aspect of female does not apply here (וְהַטַּעַם שֶׁל בְּחִינַת נְקֵבָה אֵינוֹ עִנְיָן לְכָאן), nevertheless know (מִכָּל מָקוֹם תֵּדַע), that every Partzuf beneath its companion does not possess vessels and limbs as great as the Partzuf above it (כִּי כָּל פַּרְצוּף שֶׁתַּחַת חֲבֵירוֹ אֵינוֹ כָּל כָּךְ כֵּלָיו וְאֵיבָרָיו גְּדוֹלִים כְּמוֹ הַפַּרְצוּף שֶׁעָלָיו), as you shall know this in detail in the five Partzufim (כְּמוֹ שֶׁתֵּדַע זֶה בִּפְרָטוּת בַּה׳ פַּרְצוּפִים). And both this and that are true (וְזֶה וְזֶה אֱמֶת), because the stature of Binah is shorter than the stature of Chokhmah (מִפְּנֵי שֶׁקוֹמָתָהּ שֶׁל בִּינָה יוֹתֵר קְצָרָה מִקּוֹמַת חָכְמָה), and Binah was unable to contain from the stature of Chokhmah except only until the upper third of the Keter of Chokhmah from below upward (וְלֹא הָיְתָה בִּינָה יְכוֹלָה לְהָכִיל מִקּוֹמַת חָכְמָה כִּי אִם עַד שְׁלִישׁ הָעֶלְיוֹן הַכֶּתֶר שֶׁל חָכְמָה בִּלְבַד מִלְּמַטָּה לְמַעְלָה), and also from the Keter of Chokhmah two thirds of it are covered by Binah (וְגַם מֵהַכֶּתֶר שֶׁל חָכְמָה שְׁנֵי שְׁלִישָׁיו מְכוּסֶּה מִבִּינָה), for if, Heaven forbid, this Keter of Chokhmah had no revealed portion (שֶׁאִלּוּ לֹא הָיָה חַס וְשָׁלוֹם הַכֶּתֶר הַזֶּה שֶׁל חָכְמָה מְגוּלֶּה קְצָתוֹ), human beings would be like the beasts of the field and no human being would possess wisdom (הָיוּ בְּנֵי אָדָם כְּחַיּוֹת הַשָּׂדֶה וְלֹא הָיָה חָכְמָה לְשׁוּם אָדָם). And to this the author of Sefer Berit Menuchah alluded and said by allusion (וְלָזֶה רָמַז בַּעַל סֵפֶר בְּרִית מְנוּחָה וְאָמַר בְּרֶמֶז), “the Chokhmah revealed her head” (הַחָכְמָה גִּלְּתָה רֹאשָׁהּ), and were it not revealed (וְאִלּוּלֵי לֹא הָיְתָה מְגוּלָה), human beings would be like the beasts of the field (הָיוּ בְּנֵי אָדָם כְּחַיּוֹת הַשָּׂדֶה), and even though he speaks in the world of Beri’ah (וְאַף שֶׁהוּא מְדַבֵּר בְּעוֹלָם הַבְּרִיאָה), you already know that “everything that happened to the fathers happened to the children” (כְּבָר יָדַעְתָּ שֶׁכָּל מַה שֶּׁאֵירַע לָאָבוֹת אֵירַע לַבָּנִים) (Ramban, Genesis 12).
Behold before you (הֲרֵי לְפָנֶיךָ), that the garments are such that Chokhmah enclothes the Malkhut from outside (שֶׁהַמַּלְבּוּשִׁין הֵם שֶׁחָכְמָה מַלְבֶּשֶׁת מַלְכוּת מִבַּחוּץ), and Chokhmah is covered by Binah and enclothes Binah from within (וְחָכְמָה מְכוּסָה מִבִּינָה וּמַלְבֶּשֶׁת בִּינָה מִבִּפְנִים), and this is the meaning of what is said in Sifra deTzni‘uta (וְזֶהוּ אוֹמְרוֹ בְּסִפְרָא דְצְנִיעוּתָא): “And He prepared and bequeathed garments of glory” (וּלְבוּשִׁין דִּיקָר אִתְקִין וְאַחְסִין), so that the light of Chokhmah should not be entirely revealed and the worlds would be unable to endure it (כְּדֵי שֶׁלֹּא יִהְיֶה אוֹר שֶׁל חָכְמָה כּוּלּוֹ מְגוּלֶּה וְלֹא יוּכְלוּ הָעוֹלָמוֹת לְסָבְלוֹ). And if you say (וְאִם תֹּאמַר), let Ein Sof make them able to endure it (יַעֲשֶׂה אֵין סוֹף כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּסְבְּלוּ), the answer is (תְּשׁוּבָה): in order that they should not, Heaven forbid, treat it with disrespect, namely the light of Chokhmah (כְּדֵי שֶׁלֹּא יְזַלְזְלוּ בּוֹ [בְּאוֹר הַחָכְמָה] חַס וְשָׁלוֹם), and that disrespect would cause irreparable corruption (וְהַזִּלְזוּל הָיָה גּוֹרֵם קִלְקוּל בִּלְתִּי תַּקָּנָה), therefore for the sake of the honor which Sifra deTzni‘uta calls “glory” (לָכֵן בִּשְׁבִיל הַכָּבוֹד שֶׁקּוֹרֵא הַסִּפְרָא דְצְנִיעוּתָא דִּיקָר), namely “garments of glory” (דְּהַיְנוּ לְבוּשִׁין דִּיקָר), for the sake of honor the garments were made (בִּשְׁבִיל הַכָּבוֹד נַעֲשׂוּ הַמַּלְבּוּשִׁים). And the spreading of these three, namely the Keter, Chokhmah, Binah of Arich (וְהִתְפַּשְּׁטוּת אֵלּוּ הַשְּׁלֹשָׁה דְּהַיְנוּ כֶּתֶר חָכְמָה בִינָה שֶׁל אֲרִיךְ), and their enclothing as we have said (וּבְהִתְלַבְּשׁוּתָם כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמַרְנוּ), causes the Tikkun (גּוֹרֵם הַתִּיקּוּן), and after these three were rectified (וְאַחַר שֶׁנִּתְקַנּוּ אֵלֶּה הַשְּׁלֹשָׁה), the thread of Ein Sof entered within the Sefirot of these three (נִכְנַס הַחוּט שֶׁל אֵין סוֹף בְּתוֹךְ סְפִירוֹתֵיהֶם שֶׁל אֵלֶּה הַג׳), and bequeathed this enclothing to Abba and Imma and Ze’ir Anpin and his Nukvah (וְהוֹרִישׁ הַהִתְלַבְּשׁוּת הַזֶּה לְאַבָּא וְאִמָּא וּזְעֵיר וְנוּקְבֵיהּ). Namely (דְּהַיְנוּ): Abba enclothes the Chesed of Arich (אַבָּא מַלְבִּישׁ חֶסֶד שֶׁל אֲרִיךְ), just as Chokhmah enclothes the Chesed of the Malkhut (כְּמוֹ שֶׁחָכְמָה מַלְבֶּשֶׁת חֶסֶד שֶׁל מַלְכוּת), and Imma enclothes the Gevurah of Arich (וְאִמָּא מַלְבֶּשֶׁת גְּבוּרָה שֶׁל אֲרִיךְ), and attaches herself to Chokhmah, namely Abba (וּמִתְדַּבֶּקֶת בְּחָכְמָה דְּהַיְנוּ אַבָּא), as Rashbi said in the Idra (כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמַר הָרַשְׁבִּ״י בְּאִדְּרָא): “They emerge as one and dwell as one, never separating forever” (כַּחֲדָא נָפְקִין וּכַחֲדָא שָׁרְיָין דְּלָא מִתְפָּרְשִׁין לְעָלְמִין) (Etz Chaim, Sha‘ar 12, chapter 2). And afterward Ze’ir Anpin and his Nukvah enclothe Arich from the navel and below (וְאַחַר כָּךְ זְעֵיר וְנוּקְבֵיהּ מַלְבִּישִׁין לַאֲרִיךְ מִן הַטַּבּוּר וּלְמַטָּה), and also Binah enclothes Ze’ir Anpin from within, from his head until his feet (וְגַם בִּינָה מַלְבֶּשֶׁת לִזְעֵיר מִבִּפְנִים מֵרֹאשׁוֹ וְעַד רַגְלָיו), just as the Chokhmah of Arich enclothes the Binah from within as stated (כְּמוֹ שֶׁהַחָכְמָה שֶׁל אֲרִיךְ מַלְבֶּשֶׁת לְבִינָה מִבִּפְנִים כָּאָמוּר). And this is the meaning of what is said in Sifra deTzni‘uta, “and He bequeathed” (וְזֶהוּ אוֹמְרוֹ בְּסִפְרָא דְצְנִיעוּתָא וְאַחְסִין), namely “He prepared and bequeathed garments of glory” (דְּהַיְנוּ וּלְבוּשִׁין דִּיקָר אִתְקִין וְאַחְסִין), meaning He bequeathed them to that which is beneath them (פֵּירוּשׁ הוֹרִישׁ אוֹתָם לְמַה שֶּׁלְּמַטָּה מֵהֶם), and because in the world of Atzilut Ze’ir Anpin and the Malkhut are visible there alone (וּלְפִי שֶׁבְּעוֹלָם הָאֲצִילוּת נִמְצָא זְעֵיר אַנְפִּין וְהַמַּלְכוּת נִרְאֵית לְשָׁם בִּלְבַד), therefore the Malkhut is a Partzuf unto itself (לָזֶה הַמַּלְכוּת הוּא פַּרְצוּף בִּפְנֵי עַצְמוֹ).
