Chesed, judgment, mercy - The Ways of Conduct

However, providence must change according to the deeds of those below (אֲבָל הַשְּׁגָחָה צְרִיכָה לְהִשְׁתַּנּוֹת לְפִי מַעֲשֵׂי הַתַּחְתּוֹנִים), for sometimes He will act with Chesed to grant good (כִּי לְפָעָמִים יִהְיֶה פּוֹעֵל חֶסֶד לְשַׁלֵּם טוֹב), and sometimes judgment to punish one who deserves it (וּלְפָעָמִים דִּין לְהַעֲנִישׁ לָרָאוּי לוֹ). Therefore, governance was arranged with Chesed and judgment And in truth, sometimes the Holy One, blessed be He, will act with great and complete Chesed to forgive all transgression (וּבֶאֱמֶת יֵשׁ לְפָעָמִים שֶׁיְּהִיֶה הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא פּוֹעֵל חֶסֶד גָּדוֹל וְגָמוּר לִמְחֹל כָּל פֶּשַׁע), and sometimes He acts with intense judgment, that justice pierce the mountain, and to scrutinize even as a hair's breadth (וְיֵשׁ לְפָעָמִים שֶׁפּוֹעֵל דִּין תַּקִּיף, שֶׁיְּקוֹב הַדִּין אֶת הָהָר, וּלְדַקְדֵּק אֲפִלּוּ כְּחוּט הַשַּׂעָרָה). And there is a middle quality between Chesed and judgment, and it is called mercy Thus the governance is divided into Chesed, judgment, and mercy (הֲרֵי הַהַנְהָגָה מִתְחַלֶּקֶת לְחֶסֶד, דִּין, רַחֲמִים), and according to these divisions, so is the above-mentioned general providence (וּלְפִי הַחִלּוּקִים הָאֵלֶּה כָּךְ תִּהְיֶה הַשְּׁגָחָתוֹ הַכְּלָלִית הַנַּ״ל).

Behold here are four aspects of action - Chesed, judgment, mercy, and general governance And these are the primary heads of governance and its foundations, like the elements of nature for their composites And they are all alluded to in the four letters of the Name, blessed be He, as I will explain to you further with the help of Heaven And if you should ask me, why is there need for four (וְאִם תִּשְׁאַלְנִי מַה הַצֹּרֶךְ לְד׳), is not the general providence itself able to act sometimes with Chesed, sometimes with judgment, and sometimes with mercy - or all three together as is proper for each case?

Know that this flows from the Emanator, blessed be He, desiring to be awakened in His action according to the awakening He receives from those below Therefore, we discern in His actions two aspects (עַל כֵּן הִנֵּה נַבְחִין בִּפְעוּלוֹתָיו שְׁנֵי עִנְיָנִים): first - this awakening that He wishes to receive from those below, and likewise to bestow upon them (א׳ - הַהִתְעוֹרְרוּת הַזֶּה שֶׁהוּא רוֹצֶה לְקַבֵּל מִן הַתַּחְתּוֹנִים, וְכֵן לְהַשְׁפִּיעַ בָּהֶם), and this is the matter of His connection to them and His desire to have a relationship with them (וְזֶהוּ עִנְיַן הִתְקַשְּׁרוּת בָּהֶם וּרְצוֹנוֹ שֶׁיְּהֵא לוֹ שַׁיָּכוּת עִמָּהֶם); and second - the action He performs according to the awakening (וּב׳ - עִנְיַן הַפְּעוּלָה אֲשֶׁר יִפְעַל עַל פִּי הַהִתְעוֹרְרוּת).

Thus it is found that the awakening is not the action, and the action is not the awakening (וְנִמְצָא שֶׁאֵין הַהִתְעוֹרְרוּת הַפְּעוּלָה, וְלֹא הַפְּעוּלָה הַהִתְעוֹרְרוּת), but they are two things necessary to one another for the completion of governance (אֶלָּא הֵם שְׁנֵי דְבָרִים צְרִיכִים זֶה לָזֶה לְהַשְׁלִים הַהַנְהָגָה). And therefore, this connection and relationality of the Emanator, blessed be He, with those below - that is what we call Shekhinah (וְלָכֵן לְהִתְקַשְּׁרוּת וּלְשַׁיָּכוּת הַזֹּאת שֶׁל הַמַּאֲצִיל בָּרוּךְ הוּא עִם הַתַּחְתּוֹנִים - הוּא שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ קוֹרְאִים שְׁכִינָה), and His actions according to their types we call Chesed, judgment, and mercy (וּלִפְעוּלוֹתָיו בְּחִלּוּק מִינֵיהֶם - אֲנַחְנוּ קוֹרְאִים חַד״ר). It follows, then, that the root of the governance which changes according to those governed is these three modes of action - Chesed, judgment, and mercy

And when the Emanator, blessed be He, brings forth the outcomes of these actions in man or in the world He brings forth physical things - only they are drawn from His acting thus Therefore, when He acts by way of Chesed He brings forth in physicality the element of water - cold and moist in its nature When He acts by judgment - He brings forth fire, whose nature is hot and dry And when He acts through the middle quality, mercy - He brings forth air, hot and moist

These are the natural elements that build all things according to their kinds (הֵן הֵם יְסוֹדוֹת הַטֶּבַע הַבּוֹנִים כָּל הַדְּבָרִים לְמִינֵיהֶם), in conjunction with the earth, which comes from the aspect of general governance (בְּחִבּוּר הֶעָפָר עִמָּהֶם, שֶׁהוּא יוֹצֵא מִבְּחִינַת הַהַנְהָגָה הַכְּלָלִית), as I will further explain to you with the help of Heaven (כְּמוֹ שֶׁאֲדַבֵּר לְךָ עוֹד מִזֶּה בְּסִיַּיעְתָּא דִּשְׁמַיָּא). And from these roots - which are these actions - influence is drawn to the branches, which are their outcomes in this world For in His continual acting in this way, He grants existence to what proceeds from that action
