The Words of Rasham
Behold, we find it written concerning the creation of the world: “These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created” (הִנֵּה מְצוּאֶה כָּתוּב בְּבְרִיאַת הָעוֹלָם: ״אֵלֶּה תּוֹלְדוֹת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְהָאָרֶץ בְּהִבָּרְאָם״), and our Sages, of blessed memory, said: “Behibbar’am [when they were created]—through Avraham” (וְרַז״ל אָמְרוּ: ״בְּהִבָּרְאָם – בְּאַבְרָהָם״).
From this we learn that from the beginning of the world’s creation, it was His intent to create it for Avraham (לָמַדְנוּ שֶׁמִּתְּחִלַּת בְּרִיאַת הָעוֹלָם נִתְכַּוֵּן לִבְרוֹאוֹ בִּשְׁבִיל אַבְרָהָם), for he is the head of the generations of the patriarchs (כִּי הוּא רֹאשׁ לְתוֹלְדוֹת הָאָבוֹת). And to this the verse hints when it begins to describe the destruction of the world because of the generation of the flood: “And only Noach remained” (וְגַם לָזֶה רָמַז הַכָּתוּב בְּאוֹמְרוֹ, כְּשֶׁבָּא לְסַפֵּר הַשְׁחָתַת הָעוֹלָם בִּשְׁבִיל דּוֹר הַמַּבּוּל: ״וַיִּשָּׁאֵר אַךְ נֹחַ״), to hint that the world was preserved and not utterly destroyed-for the sake of the merit of Avraham, Yitzchak, and Ya'akov (לְרַמֵּז שֶׁהָעוֹלָם נִתְקַיֵּים וְלֹא נִתְבַּטֵּל לְגַמְרֵי זֶרַע הַמִּין הָאֱנוֹשִׁי בִּשְׁבִיל זְכוּת אַבְרָהָם, יִצְחָק וְיַעֲקֹב).
For “ach” (only) in gematria equals 21 (כִּי ״אַךְ״ בְּגִימַטְרִיָּה כ״א)p1-15, and so too the initials of the names of the patriarchs add up to 21: alef from Avraham, yud from Yitzchak, and Yod from Ya'akov (וְכֵן רָאשֵׁי אוֹתִיּוֹת הָאָבוֹת עוֹלִים כ״א: א׳ מֵאַבְרָהָם, י׳ מִיִּצְחָק, י׳ מִיַּעֲקֹב). And as a further affirmation of our statement and of what we saw-that the world was given by Hashem for the sake of the patriarchs (וּלְתוֹסֶפֶת הָאֱמֶת לְאָמְרֵנוּ לִרְאִיָּתֵנוּ כִּי הָעוֹלָם נָתַן ה׳ בִּשְׁבִיל הָאָבוֹת), it is in His statement to Noach: “My bow I have set in the cloud” (הוּא בְּאָמְרוֹ שֶׁל הקב״ה לְנֹחַ: ״אֶת קַשְׁתִּי נָתַתִּי בֶּעָנָן״).
Know that the appearances of the rainbow are threefold: green, red, and white Green corresponds to Avraham, for he is the man of chesed, and chesed is symbolized by green Red corresponds to Yitzchak, for to his portion belongs Gevurah, symbolized by red, which is the trait of judgment White corresponds to Ya'akov, for he is the man of mercy, and to his portion belongs the trait of Emet [Truth], which is symbolized by white Until you understand that all the great luminaries, due to the intensity of their light, dim and diminish the flame of the torches of the lesser light Just as you clearly observe: the moon has no light when the sun appears in the world
Now the light of the rainbow is greater and more powerful than all the luminaries And the proof: as it is written, “My bow I have set in the cloud” (וְהָרְאָיָה מִדִּכְתִיב: ״אֶת קַשְׁתִּי נָתַתִּי בֶּעָנָן״), meaning: I will give the sign of the rainbow in the cloud p1-16(שֶׁרוֹצֶה לוֹמַר: אֶתֵּן אוֹת הַקֶּשֶׁת בֶּעָנָן). And due to its great light and the fiery shafts it casts into the cloud, it shall be visible to all (וּלְרוֹב אוֹרוֹ וּלְפִידָיו אֲשֶׁר יִתֵּן בֶּעָנָן אָז יֵרָאֶה לְעֵין כָּל), even though the cloud by its nature is darkness and darkens the atmosphere and the light of the sun (אַף כִּי הֶעָנָן לְפִי טִבְעוֹ חֹשֶׁךְ וּמַחְשִׁיךְ הָאֲוִיר וְאוֹר הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ). And behold, on the day that Elohim created a new thingp1-17 in the earth (וְהִנֵּה, בַּיּוֹם אֲשֶׁר בָּרָא אֱלֹקִים חֲדָשָׁה בָּאָרֶץ), it seemed as if it were due to the vision of human eyes (כִּמְדֻמֶּה הָיָה עַל רְאִיַּת עֵין בְּנֵי הָאָדָם), for it is small and cannot distinguish between good and evil (כִּי קָטָן הוּא וְאֵין מַבְחִין בֵּין טוֹב לְרָע), and it cannot perceive the heavenly light due to the intensity of its radiance (וְלֹא יָכוֹל לְהַשִּׂיג הָאוֹר הַשָּׁמַיִּי לְתַעֲצוּמַת אוֹרוֹ). And they thought they saw three faces of the sun as if in separation And since the light of the rainbow was then given through the sun (וּלְהִיוֹת שֶׁאוֹר הַקֶּשֶׁת נִתַּן אָז בַּשֶּׁמֶשׁ), its light was slightly dimmed due to its greatness as light (הֶחְשִׁיךְ אוֹרוֹ בְּמְעַט לִהְיוֹתוֹ גָּדוֹל כָּאוֹרָה). And since the rainbow has three hues, as we have said (וּלְהִיוֹת הַקֶּשֶׁת בַּעַל שְׁלֹשָׁה גְוָנִים כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמַרְנוּ), the face of the sun appeared in three places within its radiance (נִרְאָה פַּרְצוּף הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ בִּשְׁלֹשָׁה מְקוֹמוֹת בִּזְהָרוֹ), one green, one red, and one white p1-18(אֶחָד יָרוֹק וְאֶחָד אָדוֹם וְאֶחָד לָבָן).
For so the image of the vision was drawn in various places And it arose in the thought of the observers, who looked only at the surface of the vision and not with the eye of reason (וְעָלְתָה עַל מַחֲשֶׁבֶת הָרוֹאִים אֲשֶׁר הִבִּיטוּ בִּמְקֵרֵה הַרְאִיָּה וְלֹא בְּעֵין הַשֵּׂכֶל), that there were three distinct solar faces p1-19(כִּי יִהְיוּ שְׁלֹשָׁה פַּרְצוּפִים בִּפְרָטוּת). But far be it-far be it-to think such a thing (וְחָלִילָה חָלִילָה לַחְשֹׁב הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה), that a new creation was brought into being by Hashem at such a time (שֶׁבְּרִיאָה חֲדָשָׁה יִבְרָא ה׳ לְעֵת כָּזֹאת), even though He has the power and strength to do all that He wills (הַגַּם כִּי בְיָדוֹ הַכֹּחַ וְהַגְּבוּרָה לַעֲשׂוֹת כְּכָל אֲשֶׁר יַחְפֹּץ).
Moreover, nature does not alter its nature (וְגַם הַטֶּבַע לֹא יְשַׁנֶּה טִבְעוֹ), and what was is what shall be forever (וּמַה שֶּׁהָיָה לְעוֹלָמִים כְּבָר הוּא), and one sun was created to illuminate the earth (וְשֶׁמֶשׁ אֶחָד נִבְרָא לְהָאִיר עַל הָאָרֶץ). And one sun it was Indeed, it was perceived at that time with three hues (הָאֻמְנָם נִרְאָה אָז בָּעֵת הַהִיא בַּעַל שְׁלוֹשָׁה גְּוָנִים), and the metaphor for this is: when you hold in your hand a mirror that is broken (וְהַמָּשָׁל בָּזֶה: כְּשֶׁיֵּשׁ בְּיָדְךָ אַסְפַּקְלַרְיָא אֶחָת שֶׁתִּהְיֶה שְׁבוּרָה), and you gaze into it (וְתִסְתַּכֵּל בָּהּ), you will see many images of your face (תִּרְאֶה כַּמָּה וְכַמָּה פָּנִים דִּמְיוֹן פָּנֶיךָ), according to the number of fragments (לְפִי סְכוּם חֶשְׁבּוֹן הַשְּׁבָרִים), for each shard reflects one face separately (כִּי כָּל שֶׁבֶר יַרְאֶה פַּרְצוּף אֶחָד לְעַצְמוֹ).
And behold, aside from your face in that mirror (וְהִנֵּה זוּלַת פָּנֶיךָ בִּרְאִיּוֹת הָאַסְפַּקְלַרְיָא הַהִיא), so too was the appearance of the sun on that day (כֵּן הָיָה מַרְאֵה הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא), according to the hues of the rainbow that were given and shone like a sun (לְפִי גְּוָנֵי הַקֶּשֶׁת שֶׁנִּתְּנוּ וְהֵאִירוּ כְּשֶׁמֶשׁ)-thus the vision appeared in three faces, and yet to three it did not truly come (כֵּן הָיְתָה הַרְאִיָּה לִשְׁלֹשָׁה פָּנִים, וְאֶל שְׁלֹשָׁה לֹא בָּא).
And this secret emerges from a certain teaching in the Zohar, which says: Do not anticipate the footsteps of the Messiah until the colors of the rainbow no longer shine their light And have we not already said that the colors of the rainbow represent the patriarchs? (וְהֲלֹא כְּבָר אָמַרְנוּ כִּי מַרְאוֹת הַקֶּשֶׁת הֵם הָאָבוֹת), meaning: until the patriarchs awaken in love for their children (שֶׁרְצוֹנוֹ לוֹמַר: עַד שֶׁהָאָבוֹת לָא יִתְעוֹרְרוּ עַל אַהֲבַת בְּנֵיהֶם). Just as in the beginning of creation, the whole earth was green, as it says “Let the earth bring forth grass” (כְּמוֹ שֶׁבִּתְחִלַּת בְּרִיאַת הָעוֹלָם הָיָה כֻּלּוֹ יָרוֹק, כְּמוֹ שֶׁאוֹמֵר: ״חֲדַשָׁא הָאָרֶץ דֶּשֶׁא עֵשֶׂב״), so too Avraham, who was first to serve the Creator, his portion was the green, symbolic of chesed (כֵּן אַבְרָהָם שֶׁהָיָה תְּחִלָּה לַעֲבוֹדַת הַבּוֹרֵא – הָיָה לְחֶלְקוֹ הַיָּרוֹק, הַמְּרֻמָּז בַּחֶסֶד).
And just as afterwards the earth brings forth fruit-the fruit is red after green Thus Yitzchak came after Avraham—he who was second to Avraham in the service of the Creator—and his portion was the attribute of Gevurah [might], alluded to by red, which is the attribute of judgment
And just as the fruit, when fully ripened, turns white again (וּכְמוֹ שֶׁהַפֶּרִי אַחַר גְּמַר בִּשּׁוּלוֹ – הוּא חוֹזֵר לָבָן), so too Ya'akov, who was third after Avraham in divine service-his service was complete (כֵּן יַעֲקֹב שֶׁהָיָה שְׁלִישִׁי לְאַבְרָהָם בַּעֲבוֹדַת הַבּוֹרֵא – וְאָז עֲבוֹדָתוֹ אֵצְלוֹ הָיְתָה בְּשְׁלֵמוּת), and to him belongs the attribute of emet, symbolized in white, which is the attribute of mercy (הָיָה לְחֶלְקוֹ מִדַּת אֱמֶת הַמְּרֻמֶּזֶת בְּלָבָן, וְהִיא מִדַּת רַחֲמִים).
And the secret of the matter is in what the verse says: “The moon shall be humiliated, and the sun ashamed, for Hashem Tzevaot will reign on Mount Zion and in Yerushalayim, and before His elders-glory” (וְרָזָא דְּמִלְּתָא מַה שֶּׁאוֹמֵר הַכָּתוּב: ״וְחָפְרָה הַלְּבָנָה וּבוֹשָׁה הַחַמָּה כִּי מָלַךְ ה׳ צְבָאוֹת בְּהַר צִיּוֹן וּבִירוּשָׁלִַם וְנֶגֶד זְקֵנָיו כָּבוֹד״). His elders-are they not the patriarchs? (זְקֵנָיו – הֲלֹא הֵם הָאָבוֹת), for in the coming of the Mashiach, speedily in our days (כִּי בְּבִיאַת הַמָּשִׁיחַ בִּמְהֵרָה בְּיָמֵינוּ), the light of the patriarchs will be sevenfold greater than the light of the sun (אוֹר הָאָבוֹת יִהְיֶה שִׁבְעָתַיִם מֵאוֹר הַחַמָּה), and they shall illuminate the entire world (וְהֵם יָאִירוּ לְכָל הָעוֹלָם), and then they will awaken in love for us (וְאָז יִתְעוֹרְרוּ לְאַהֲבָתֵנוּ), and their lights shall shine forth-the colors of the rainbow-in perfection (וְיָזִירוּ אוֹרוֹת גְּוָונֵי הַקֶּשֶׁת בִּשְׁלֵמוּת). And behold-the time of lovers has arrived (וְהִנֵּה עֵת דּוֹדִים הִגִּיעַ), and they have begun to shine the radiance of their light (וְהִתְחִילוּ לְהַזְהִיר זֹהַר אוֹרָם). May Hashem hasten for us the redemption (ה׳ יַחִישׁ לָנוּ גְּאֻלָּה), and the daughter of Israel shall rejoice and be glad (וּבַת יִשְׂרָאֵל צָהֲלָה וְשָׂמֵחָה).
Notes
Rasham also expounded the gematria of the word “ach” in Sefer ha-Mefo’ar 24:1 (רַש״ם דָּרַשׁ אֶת הַגִּימַטְרִיָּה שֶׁל הַמִּלָּה ״אַךְ״ גַּם בְּסֵפֶר הַמְּפוֹאָר כד:א).
That is: the sign which Hashem gave to Noach is that the rainbow was given specifically in a cloud (כְּלוֹמַר: הָאוֹת שֶׁנָּתַן ה׳ לְנֹחַ הִיא שֶׁהַקֶּשֶׁת נִתְּנָה דַּוְקָא בֶּעָנָן), and the light pierces through the cloud even though the cloud (וְהָאוֹר בּוֹקֵעַ דֶּרֶךְ עָנָן), by nature, usually darkens-even the light of the sun (אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁהֶעָנָן בְּדֶרֶךְ כְּלָל מַחֲשִׁיךְ, אֲפִלּוּ אֶת אוֹר הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ).
“A new thing in the land” - Yirmiyahu 31:21 (״חֲדָשָׁה בָּאָרֶץ״ – יִרְמְיָהוּ ל״א:כ״א), that is: something new (כְּלוֹמַר: דָּבָר חָדָשׁ), in this case-merely imagined (וּבְמִקְרֶה זֶה: מְדֻמֶּה בִּלְבַד). The intent, as will be clarified in the following sentence (הַכַּוָּנָה, כְּפִי שֶׁתִּתְבָּרֵר בַּמִּשְׁפָּט הָעוֹקֵב), is to a rare celestial phenomenon that surprised the inhabitants of the region and frightened them (הִיא לַתּוֹפָעָה הַשְּׁמֵימִית הַנְּדִירָה שֶׁהִפְתִּיעָה אֶת בְּנֵי הָאֵזוֹר וְהִבְהִילָה אוֹתָם). Its scientific name is parhelia (שְׁמָהּ הַמַּדָּעִי שֶׁל הַתּוֹפָעָה הוּא "פַּרְהֵלְיָה), and it occurs when rays of sunlight pass through a cloud containing ice crystals (וְהִיא מִתְרַחֶשֶׁת כְּשֶׁקַּרְנֵי אוֹר הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ עוֹבְרוֹת דֶּרֶךְ עָנָן שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ חַלְקִיקֵי קֶרַח), and the light rays are refracted and reflected in the form of two or three suns (וּקַרְנֵי הָאוֹר נִשְׁבָּרוֹת וּמֻחְזָרוֹת בִּדְמוּת שְׁתֵּי שֶׁמָּשוֹת אוֹ שָׁלוֹשׁ). Sometimes there also appears a halo that resembles a rainbow linking the two secondary suns (לְפָעָמִים נִרְאֵית גַּם הֵילָה הַדּוֹמָה לְקֶשֶׁת, הַמְּחַבֶּרֶת בֵּין שְׁתֵּי הַשְּׁמָשׁוֹת הַנּוֹסָפוֹת).
It should be noted that the meaning of the word yarok [green] in antiquity does not necessarily match its meaning today (יֵשׁ לְצַיֵּן שֶׁמַּשְׁמָעוּת הַמִּלָּה ״יָרוֹק״ בְּעַתִּיקוּת לֹא דַּוְקָא זֹהִי שֶׁל הַיּוֹם), and it may here refer to a bluish hue (וְיֵיתָכֵן שֶׁהַכַּוָּנָה כָּאן לְגוֹן כָּחֹל). Rashi, for example, writes: “Tekhelet—wool dyed with the blood of a chilazon, and its color is green” (רש״י, לְמָשָׁל, כּוֹתֵב: ״וּתְכֵלֶת – צֶמֶר צָבוּעַ בְּדַם חִילָזוֹן, וְצִבְעוֹ יָרוֹק״ – רש״י עַל שְׁמוֹת כ״ה:ד׳). In effect, Rasham accurately describes the phenomenon of parhelia (רַש״ם לְמַעֲשֶׂה מְתָאֵר בִּדְיוּק אֶת תּוֹפַעַת הַפַּרְהֵלְיָה): the inner edge of the mock sun appears red, its middle white, and its outer edge green to blue (צִדָּהּ הַפְּנִימִי שֶׁל הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ הַמְּדוּמָה הוּא אָדוֹם, הָאֶמְצָעִי לָבָן, וְהַקָּצֶה הַחִיצוֹנִי יָרוֹק עַד כָּחוֹל).
That is: the people imagined that they had seen a new creation (כְּלוֹמַר: הָאֲנָשִׁים דִּמְּיוּ לְעַצְמָם שֶׁרָאוּ בְּרִיאָה חֲדָשָׁה), and in the next paragraph, Rasham refutes this possibility (וּבַפִּסְקָה הַבָּאָה מַפְרִיךְ רַש״ם אֶת הָאֶפְשָׁרוּת הַזֹּאת).
