Chapter 16, Section 1 (פֶּרֶק ט״ז אוֹת א׳)

1. Rabbi Yishma‘el said (א. אָמַר רַבִּי יִשְׁמָעֵאל): Once my ears heard this warning (כֵּיוָן שֶׁשָּׁמְעוּ אָזְנַי הַתְרָאָה הַזֹּאת), my strength weakened (תָּשַׁשׁ כֹּחִי), I said to him (אָמַרְתִּי לוֹ): “Rabbi, if so, there is no end to the matter (רִבִּי אִם כֵּן אֵין לַדָּבָר סוֹף), for there is no person with a soul in him (שֶׁאֵין לְךָ אָדָם שֶׁהַנְּשָׁמָה בּוֹ), who is clean and purified from these eight attributes” (שֶׁנָּקִי וּמְנוֹעָר מִשְּׁמוֹנֶה מִדּוֹת הַלָּלוּ). He said to me (אָמַר לִי): “Son of the proud ones (בֶּן גֵּאִים), if not (וְאִם לָאו), stand and bring before Me all the mighty ones of the fellowship (עֲמוֹד וְהָבֵא לְפָנַי כָּל גִּבּוֹרֵי חֲבוּרָה), and all the glorious ones of the academy (וְכָל אַדִּירֵי יְשִׁיבָה), and I shall say before them (וַאֲנִי אוֹמֵר לִפְנֵיהֶם): the hidden secrets (הָרָזִים הַסְּתוּרִים), the concealed wonders (הַכְּבוּשִׁין נִפְלָאוֹת), and the woven web of the tractate (וַעֲרִיגַת הַמַּסֶּכֶת), upon which the perfection and adornment of the world stands (שֶׁשִּׁכְלוּל הָעוֹלָם וְסַלְסוּלוֹ עוֹמֵד עָלֶיהָ), and the rod upon which heaven and earth are spitted (וְשִׁפּוּד שָׁמַיִם וָאָרֶץ), that all the wings of earth and world (שֶׁכָּל כַּנְפֵי אֶרֶץ וָתֵבֵל), and the wings of the heavens of the heights (וְכַנְפֵי רְקִיעֵי מָרוֹם), are tied, sewn, connected, suspended, and supported upon it (קְשׁוּרִין תְּפוּרִין וּמְחֻבָּרִין תְּלוּיִין וְעוֹמְדִין בּוֹ), and the path of the Ladder of Heights (וּנְתִיב סֻלָּם מָרוֹם), whose one end is on earth (שֶׁרֹאשׁוֹ אֶחָד בָּאָרֶץ), and its other end is upon the right foot of the Throne of Glory (וְרֹאשׁוֹ אֶחָד עַל רֶגֶל יָמִין כִּסֵּא הַכָּבוֹד).
