Chapter 20, Section 1 (פֶּרֶק כ׳ אוֹת א׳)

1. Rabbi Yishma’el said (א. אָמַר רַבִּי יִשְׁמָעֵאל): The entire fellowship said to me (אָמְרוּ לִי כָּל חֲבוּרָה): “Son of the proud ones (בֶּן גֵּאִים), you rule in the light of Torah (אַתָּה מוֹשֵׁל בְּאוֹר שֶׁל תּוֹרָה), like Rabbi Nechunyah ben haKanah (כְּרַבִּי נְחוּנְיָא בֶּן הַקָּנָה). See if he has returned (רְאֵה אִם הֶחֱזַרְתּוֹ), and let him sit with us (וְיֵשֵׁב אֶצְלֵנוּ), from the watch-point from which he would peer (מִצְּפִיָּה שֶׁהָיָה מְצִיץ), and let him tell us (וְיֹאמַר לָנוּ): What is he?-of the Riders of the Merkavah (מַה הוּא, מִיּוֹרְדֵי הַמֶּרְכָּבָה), or not of the Riders of the Merkavah (וְלֹא מִיוֹרְדֵי מֶרְכָּבָה), for those whom the gatekeepers of the sixth Heikhal encounter (שֶׁהֵן פּוֹגְעִין בָּהֶן שׁוֹמְרֵי הֵיכָל הַשִּׁשִּׁי), and they would not touch true Riders of the Merkavah at all (וְלֹא הָיוּ נוֹגְעִין בְּיוֹרְדֵי מֶרְכָּבָה כָּל עִקָּר). What is the distinction between these and those?” (מַה הַפֵּרֶשׁ בֵּין אֵלּוּ לְאֵלּוּ).
