Chapter 22, Section 5 (פֶּרֶק כ״ב אוֹת ה׳)

5. Rabbi Yishma’el said (ה. אָמַר רַבִּי יִשְׁמָעֵאל): Immediately I went (מִיָּד הָלַכְתִּי), and I became angry before Nechunyah ben haKanah (וְכָעַסְתִּי כְּנֶגֶד נְחוּנְיָא בֶּן הַקָּנָה), saying (לֵאמֹר): “Prince, angry one-why do I need life?” (נָשִׂיא כַּעַס לָמָּה לִי חַיִּים). He said to me (אָמַר לִי): “Son of the proud ones (בֶּן גֵּאִים), if for this you came (אִם לְזוֹ), what is My honor upon you? (מָה כְּבוֹדִי עֲלֵיכֶם?). I have placed in your mouths Torah, Prophets, and Writings (שַׂמְתִּי בְּפִיכֶם תּוֹרָה נְבִיאִים וּכְתוּבִים), Mishnah and Midrash (מִשְׁנָה וּמִדְרָשׁ), Halakhot and Aggadot (הֲלָכוֹת וַאֲגָדוֹת), and legal rulings on prohibition and permission (וּפִסְקֵי הֲלָכוֹת אִיסּוּר וְהֶיתֵּר). If not for the mysteries of Torah that I hid from you (אִלְמַלֵּא סִתְרֵי תּוֹרָה שֶׁגָּנַזְתִּי מִכֶּם), would you have come and appeared before Me at all?” (כְּלוּם בָּאתֶם וְנִרְאֵיתֶם לְפָנַי). “I know why you have come (יוֹדֵעַ אֲנִי עַל מָה בָּאתָ)-you have come only because of the gatekeepers of the seventh Heikhal” (לֹא בָּאתָ אֶלָּא עַל שׁוֹמְרֵי הֵיכָל הַשְּׁבִיעִי).
