Chapter 31, Section 5 (פֶּרֶק ל״א אוֹת ה׳)
5. Rabbi Yishma’el said: Thus said Rabbi Akiva in the name of Rabbi Eliezer the Great (ה. אָמַר רַבִּי יִשְׁמָעֵאל: כָּךְ אָמַר רַבִּי עֲקִיבָא מִשּׁוּם רַבִּי אֱלִיעֶזֶר הַגָּדוֹל): Our ancestors did not accept upon themselves to place one stone upon another in the Heikhal (לֹא קִבְּלוּ עֲלֵיהֶם אֲבוֹתֵינוּ לָשׂוּם אֶבֶן עַל אֶבֶן בַּהֵיכָל), until they compelled the Molcho shel Olam and all His attendants (עַד שֶׁכָּפוּ לְמַלְכוֹ שֶׁל עוֹלָם וְכָל מְשָׁרְתָיו), and He submitted to them (וְנִזְקַקוּ לָהֶם), and He revealed to them the secret of the Torah-how to build it and how to use it (וְגִלָּה לָהֶם סוֹדָהּ שֶׁל תּוֹרָה הֵיאַךְ יַעֲשׂוּהוּ וְהֵיאַךְ יִשְׁתַּמְּשׁוּ בוֹ). Immediately, the Holy Spirit appeared from the great corridor that is in the House of Hashem (מִיָּד הוֹפִיעַ רוּחַ הַקֹּדֶשׁ מִמָּבוֹי הַגָּדוֹל אֲשֶׁר בְּבֵית ה׳), for the Shekhinah had not descended and had not dwelled in the Holy of Holies (שֶׁלֹּא יָרְדָה וְלֹא שָׁרְתָה שְׁכִינָה בְּבֵית קָדְשֵׁי הַקָּדָשִׁים), because of the decree (מִפְּנֵי הַגְּזֵרָה). And when they saw the Throne of Glory that coiled and stood between the Ulam and the Mizbe’ach (וְכֵיוָן שֶׁרָאוּ אֶת כִּסֵּא הַכָּבוֹד שֶׁנִּתְסַלְסֵל וְעָמַד בֵּין הָאוּלָם וְהַמִּזְבֵּחַ), though the gate was built (שֶׁאַף עַל פִּי שַׁעַר בָּנוּי).
