Chapter 33, Section 2 (פֶּרֶק ל״ג אוֹת ב׳)

2. At that moment, thus said the Holy One, blessed be He (ב. בָּאוֹתוֹ שָׁעָה אָמַר כָּךְ הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא): “Still they have not endured servitude (עֲדַיִן לֹא שִׁעְבְּדוּ שִׁעְבּוּדִין), yet they are already asking more than is proper” (וְהֵן מְבַקְשִׁין יוֹתֵר מִדַּי). The Holy One, blessed be He, becomes angry (הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא כּוֹעֵס), and binds the Mashiach (וְחוֹבֵשׁ לַמָּשִׁיחַ) for eight narrow years (שְׁמוֹנֶה שָׁנִים מְצוּמְצָמוֹת), corresponding to the eight days of circumcision (כְּנֶגֶד שְׁמוֹנַת יְמֵי מִילָה). Just as this infant-if not circumcised after eight days-is not worthy to enter the congregation (מַה תִּינוֹק זֶה שְׁמוֹנָה יָמִים שֶׁלֹּא נִמּוֹל אֵינוֹ רָאוּי לָבוֹא בַּקָּהָל), so too those years during which Mashiach is bound (אַף אוֹתָם שָׁנִים שֶׁמַּשִּׁיחַ נֶחְבָּשׁ), the Holy One, blessed be He, hides His face from him (הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא מַסְתִּיר פָּנָיו מִמֶּנּוּ).
