Chapter 34, Section 1 (פֶּרֶק ל״ד אוֹת א׳)

1. This first decree is the uprooting of mountains (א. גְּזֵרָה רִאשׁוֹנָה זוֹ עֲקִירַת הָרִים): whoever has a son-the son denies his father (מִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ בֵּן, הַבֵּן כּוֹפֵר בְּאָבִיו), whoever has a field-denies it (מִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ שָׂדֶה, כּוֹפֵר בָּהּ). This first decree is Edom the wicked (גְּזֵרָה הָרִאשׁוֹנָה זוֹ אֱדוֹם הָרְשָׁעָה), who is destined to rule over Israel for nine months (שֶׁהִיא עֲתִידָה לִמְלוֹךְ עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל תִּשְׁעָה חֳדָשִׁים), as it is said: “I have sworn to the house of Eli…” (שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: נִשְׁבַּעְתִּי לְבֵית עֵלִי) (Shmuel I 3:14) this teaches that the Holy One, blessed be He, swore that Edom the wicked shall reign in the final end (מְלַמֵּד שֶׁנִּשְׁבַּע הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא שֶׁתִּמְלֹךְ אֱדוֹם הָרְשָׁעָה בַּקֵּץ הָאַחֲרוֹן), from dome to dome (מִכִּיפָּה לְכִיפָּה). And you must learn what is their decree (וְצָרִיךְ אַתָּה לִלְמֹד מַה הִיא גְּזֵרָתָם): they double it-if against a mighty one of Torah, elevenfold (כּוֹפְלִין אִם עַל גִּבּוֹרֵי תּוֹרָה עַל אֶחָד עָשָׂר). Whoever gives ten dinars of silver-they demand from him ten dinars of gold (כָּל מִי שֶׁנוֹתֵן עֲשָׂרָה דִּינְרֵי כֶסֶף, מְבַקְּשִׁין מִמֶּנּוּ עֲשָׂרָה דִּינְרֵי זָהָב), and whoever does not have-they cut from his flesh ten dinars’ weight of flesh (וְכָל מִי שֶׁאֵין לוֹ, חוֹתְכִין מִבְּשָׂרוֹ עֲשָׂרָה דִּינְרֵי בָּשָׂר). And they decree that they shall not circumcise their sons (וּגוֹזְרִין שֶׁלֹּא יִמֹּלוּ אֶת בְּנֵיהֶם), and that they shall not observe the laws of niddah (וְשֶׁלֹּא יִשְׁמְרוּ אֶת הַנִּדָּה), and whoever mentions the Name of the Holy One, blessed be He-they cut off his head (וְהַמַּזְכִּיר שְׁמוֹ שֶׁל הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא, חוֹתְכִין אֶת רֹאשׁוֹ).
