Chapter 35, Section 4 (פֶּרֶק ל״ה אוֹת ד׳)

4. They sit and worry, and say: Surely there is redemption for Israel (ד. יוֹשְׁבִין וְדוֹאֲגִין וְאוֹמְרִין: בְּוַדַּאי יֵשׁ גְּאֻלָּה לְיִשְׂרָאֵל), and we mocked them (וַאֲנַחְנוּ הַלַּעַגְנוּ עֲלֵיהֶם), as it is said: “They shall lick the dust like a serpent…” (Mikhah 7:17) (שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: יְלַחֲכוּ עָפָר כַּנָּחָשׁ וְגוֹ'). It would have been fitting for the verse to say “they went out from him” (רָאוּי לַמִּקְרָא לוֹמַר: יָצְאוּ מִמֶּנּוּ)—what does it teach when it says “mamesh”? (מַה תַּלְמוּד לוֹמַר: מַמָּשׁ) It is that they truly fear the voice of the Mashiach (הֵם מִתְיָרְאִין מִקּוֹלוֹ שֶׁל מָשִׁיחַ). At that moment, when they hear his voice as he stands in the wheel of the chariot of the Holy One, blessed be He (בְּאוֹתוֹ שָׁעָה שֶׁשּׁוֹמְעִין קוֹלוֹ כְּשֶׁהוּא עוֹמֵד בַּגַּלְגַּל שֶׁל מֶרְכֶּבֶת שֶׁל הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא), they say: Is it possible, Heaven forbid, that this is a human born of woman? (אוֹמְרִים: הָעוֹלָם חַס וְשָׁלוֹם שֶׁזֶּה יְלוּד אִשָּׁה), that he does not stumble even in his voice? (שֶׁאֵינוֹ מַכְשִׁיל בְּקוֹלוֹ).
