Chapter 38, Section 4 (פֶּרֶק ל״ח אוֹת ד׳)

4. Immediately, one says to the other: “Now what remedy is left for us? (ד. מִיָּד אוֹמֵר זֶה לָזֶה: עַכְשָׁיו מָה תַּקָּנָה יֵשׁ לָנוּ) Come, let us bring a gift to Mashiach—perhaps he will be appeased by us.” (בּוֹאוּ וּנְקַרֵּב דוֹרוֹן לַמָּשִׁיחַ אוּלַי יִרְצֶה לָנוּ.) Immediately they bring a gift and come before him (מִיָּד מְבִיאִין דוֹרוֹן וּבָאִין אֶצְלוֹ), as it is said: “The kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts” (Psalms 72:10) (שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: שְׁבָא וּסְבָא אַשְׁכָּר יַקְרִיבוּ). He says to them: “What am I, and what is my kingship? Go, present your gift to the Holy One Blessed Be He!” (אוֹמֵר לָהֶם: מָה אֲנִי וּמָה מַלְכוּתִי לְכוּ וְהַגִּישׁוּ לַהַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא) They say to him: “But does the Holy One Blessed Be He accept bribes? Behold, He turns back upon one who accepts bribes!” (אוֹמְרִים לוֹ: וְכִי הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא מְקַבֵּל שׁוֹחַד וַהֲלֹא הוּא מַחְזִיר עַל מִי שֶׁמְּקַבֵּל שׁוֹחַד) “Why did you transgress His command and accept a bribe?” (מִפְּנֵי מָה עֲבַרְתֶּם עַל צִוּוּי וְקִבַּלְתֶּם שׁוֹחַד)
