Chapter 39, Section 1 (פֶּרֶק ל״ט אוֹת א׳)

1. And forty years before the coming of Mashiach son of David, whose name is Menachem ben Amiel (א. וְאַרְבָּעִים שָׁנָה קֹדֶם שֶׁיָּבֹא מָשִׁיחַ בֶּן דָּוִד שֶׁשְּׁמוֹ מְנַחֵם בֶּן עַמִּיאֵל), there shall come Nechemyah ben Chushiel, a man from Ephraim son of Yosef (יָבוֹא נְחֶמְיָה בֶּן חוּשִׁיאֵל אִישׁ לְאֶפְרַיִם בֶּן יוֹסֵף), and he shall stand in Jerusalem (וְיַעֲמוֹד בִּירוּשָׁלַ‍ִם), and all Israel shall gather to him (וְיִתְקַבְּצוּ אֵלָיו כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל). There, each man and his household shall be gathered (שָׁם יִקָּבֵץ אִישׁ וּבֵיתוֹ), and the Children of Israel shall offer a sacrifice (וְיַקְרִיבוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל קָרְבָּן), and it shall be pleasing to Hashem (וְיֵעָרֵב לַי־הוָה), and the Children of Israel shall trace their lineage by their families (וְיִתְיָחֲסוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לְמִשְׁפְּחוֹתָם). And after forty years of Nechemyah ben Chushiel (וּלְאַחַר אַרְבָּעִים שָׁנָה לְנְחֶמְיָה בֶּן חוּשִׁיאֵל), Shiroy king of Persia shall rise up (יַעֲלֶה שִׁידוּיֵי מֶלֶךְ פָּרַס), and he shall stab Nechemyah ben Chushiel in Jerusalem (וְיִדְקֹר אֶת נְחֶמְיָה בֶּן חוּשִׁיאֵל בִּירוּשָׁלַ‍ִם), and all Israel shall mourn for him with great mourning and weeping (וְיִסְפְּדוּהוּ כָל יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּהֶסְפֵּד גָּדוֹל וּבְכִי). And afterward shall come the wife of Natan the prophet, of the house of David, Cheftzi-bah is her name (וְאַחַר כָּךְ תָּבוֹא אֵשֶׁת נָתָן הַנָּבִיא בֶּן דָּוִד חֶפְצִי־בָהּ), and these signs shall arrive in the month of Av (וְהָאוֹתוֹת הָאֵלֶּה מַגִּיעוֹת בְּחֹדֶשׁ אָב), on the sixth day of the month (בְּשִׁשָּׁה לַחֹדֶשׁ), Shiroy king of Persia shall stab Nechemyah in Jerusalem (יִדְקֹר שִׁידוּיֵי מֶלֶךְ פָּרַס אֶת נְחֶמְיָה בִּירוּשָׁלַ‍ִם), and Israel shall be pained with mourning (וְיִגַּע לְיִשְׂרָאֵל עַל אֵבֶל), and it shall distress them greatly (וְיִצַּר לָהֶם מְאֹד), and they shall flee to the wilderness of Jerusalem (וְיִפָּצוּ לְמִדְבַּר יְרוּשָׁלַ‍ִם), to complete the mourning of Nechemyah (לְמַלּוֹת לְאֵבֶל נְחֶמְיָה), for forty-one days (אֶחָד וְאַרְבָּעִים יוֹם). His corpse shall lie cast at the gates of Jerusalem (תִּהְיֶה נִבְלָתוֹ מֻשְׁלֶכֶת בְּשַׁעֲרֵי יְרוּשָׁלַ‍ִם), and no man nor beast nor wild animal nor bird shall be able to touch him (וְאָדָם וּבְהֵמָה וְחַיָּה וְעוֹפוֹת לֹא יוּכְלוּ לָגוּעַ בּוֹ). And after forty days, the Holy One Blessed Be He shall bury him (וְלְאַחַר אַרְבָּעִים יוֹם קוֹבְרוֹ הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא), in the graves of the House of Yehudah (בְּקִבְרוֹת בֵּית יְהוּדָה).
