Chapter 39, Section 2 (פֶּרֶק ל״ט אוֹת ב׳)

2. And I, Zerubavel, continued to inquire of Matatron and Micha’el, prince of the host of Hashem (ב. וַאֲנִי זְרֻבָּבֶל הוֹסַפְתִּי לִשְׁאוֹל מְטַטְרוֹ״ן וּמִיכָאֵ״ל שַׂר צְבָא ה׳), concerning the covenant with the holy ones (עַל אוֹדוֹת בְּרִית עִם קְדוֹשִׁים). And he said to me: “The calf shall lie there, and consume her branches” (וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלַי: הָעֵגֶל הַזֶּה שָׁם יִרְבַּץ וְכָלָה סְעִיפֶיהָ) (Isaiah 27:10). And this city was the city Nineveh, the city of blood—it was great Rome (וְהַכֶּרֶךְ הַזֶּה הָיָה עִיר נִינְוֵה עִיר הַדָּמִים, הָיְתָה רוֹמִי רַבָּתִי). And I said to him: “My lord, until when is the end of wonders?” (וְאָמַרְתִּי לוֹ: אֲדֹנִי עַד מָתַי קֵץ הַפְּלָאוֹת) (Daniel 12:6). And he cleaved to me and grasped my hand (וַיִּדְבַּקְנִי וַיֶּאֱחֹז בְּיָדִי), and brought me to the House of Desolation (וַיְבִיאֵנִי אֶל בֵּית הַחֶרֶף), and there he showed me a stone (וַיַּרְאֵנִי שָׁם אֶבֶן), that had a face like the appearance of a virgin who had not known a man, and beautiful exceedingly (שֶׁיֵּשׁ לָהּ פָּנִים כְּמַרְאֵה הַבְּתוּלָה אֲשֶׁר לֹא יָדְעָה אִישׁ וִיפָת עַד לִמְאֹד). And he said to Zerubavel: “What do you see?” (וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל זְרֻבָּבֶל מַה אַתָּה רוֹאֶה), and I said to him: “I see a statue of marble, and the likeness of its face is as a beautiful woman” (וָאֹמַר לוֹ אֲנִי רוֹאֶה צֶלֶם שֵׁישׁ וּדְמוּת פָּנֶיהָ כְּאִשָּׁה יָפָה). And the man who spoke with me answered and said to me (וַיַּעַן וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלַי הָאִישׁ הַמְדַבֵּר בִּי): “This statue was the wife of Belial (הַצֶּלֶם הַזֶּה אֵשֶׁת בְּלִיַּעַל הָיְתָה). And at the time that Belial knew the statue, she conceived and bore this one: Armilus (וּבְשָׁעָה שֶׁיָּדַע הַבְּלִיַּעַל אֶת הַצֶּלֶם וַתַּהַר וַתֵּלֶד זֶה אַרְמִילוּס). And he shall be the head of all idolatry (וְהוּא יִהְיֶה לְרֹאשׁ לְכָל עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה), and he shall be entirely cleft on one side (וְיִהְיֶה כֻּלּוֹ חָתוּךְ מִצַּד אֶחָד), for half of him is from the stone and half from Belial (כִּי חֶצְיוֹ מִן הָאֶבֶן וְחֶצְיוֹ מִן הַבְּלִיַּעַל), and the half from the stone shall be sealed like the appearance of stone” (וְחֶצְיוֹ שֶׁמִּן הָאֶבֶן יִהְיֶה חָתוּם כְּמַרְאֵה אֶבֶן).
