And when the stormy wind passes, as it is said: “And the spirit of impurity I will remove from the earth” (וְכַד אִתְעֲבַר רוּחַ סְעָרָה, כְּמָה דְאַתְּ אָמַר וְאֶת רוּחַ הַטּוּמְאָה אַעֲבִיר מִן הָאָרֶץ) (Zechariah 13:2), then the beating is aroused in that Ruach Of it, it is said: “By the word of Hashem were the heavens made, and by the Ruach of His mouth all their host” (עֲלֵיהּ אִתְּמַר בִּדְבַר יהו״ה שָׁמַיִם נַעֲשׂוּ וּבְרוּחַ פִּיו כָּל צְבָאָם) (Psalms 33:6). At that time, the breaths of prayer ascend in it, in the Ruach of holiness, upward And supernal breaths are aroused toward them, of which it is said: “For not on bread alone shall man live…” (Deuteronomy 8:3). This is the breath of the heart of the holy Shekhinta, the flame of the altar And immediately when the breaths of the mouths of Yisrael ascend in prayer, Kudsha Berikh Hu inquires because of it: “Who is this ascending from the wilderness…” (Song of Songs 3:6). Truly: “Who is this ascending” (מִי בְּזֹאת עוֹלָה וַדַּאי). And because of this, there is hevel and there is hevel There is Hevel, of which it is said: “And she again bore his brother, Hevel” (אִית הֶבֶל דְּאִתְּמַר בֵּיהּ וַתּוֹסֶף לָלֶדֶת אֶת אָחִיו אֶת הָבֶל) (Bereshit 4:2). And there is Hevel of prayers and good devotions And there is hevel of vain words, empty words (וְאִית הֲבַל דְּמִלִּין בְּטֵלִין מִלִּין רֵיקָנִין), of which it is said: “They are vanity, the work of delusions; in the time of their visitation they shall perish” (דְּאִתְּמַר בְּהוֹן הֶבֶל הֵמָּה מַעֲשֵׂה תַּעֲתּוּעִים בְּעִת פְּקוּדָּתָם יֹאבֵדוּ) (Jeremiah 10:15).

What is “in the time of their visitation”? It is at the time when redemption and visitation come to Yisrael-they shall perish from the world These are the vain hevel of delusions, that mislead mankind But the Ruach of holiness rules in the world-this is the beating of which it is said: “The voice of my beloved knocks” (וְרוּחָא דְקוּדְשָׁא שַׁלִּיט בְּעָלְמָא, דְאִיהוּ דְפִיקוּ דְאִתְּמַר בֵּיהּ קוֹל דּוֹדִי דוֹפֵק) (Song of Songs 5:2). The beating that ascends in the waves of the sea, the ship that is the heart And of all the waves it is said: “Wherever the Ruach was to go, they went” (וְכָל גַּלַּיָּיא עֲלַיְהוּ אִתְּמַר אֶל אֲשֶׁר יִהְיֶה שָּׁמָּה הָרוּחַ לָלֶכֶת יֵלֵכוּ) (Ezekiel 1:12). And in them the Chayot are “running and returning”-running two and returning two And these are YHVH (וְאִינוּן יהו״ה), of which it is said: “Thus says YHVH: From the four winds, come O Ruach” (דְּאִתְּמַר בְּהוֹן כֹּה אָמַר יהו״ה מֵאַרְבַּע רוּחוֹת בֹּאִי הָרוּחַ) (Ezekiel 37:9).

Shekhinta-about her it is said: “Who placed the sand as a boundary for the sea” (שְׁכִינְתָּא עֲלָהּ אִתְּמַר אֲשֶׁר שַׂמְתִּי חוֹל גְּבוּל לַיָּם) (Jeremiah 5:22). And she is the boundary of all, like the boundary of Shabbat And when the waves run in four directions, immediately, when they see the Shekhinta, which is the sand of the heart [some say: of the sea], that is the sand that restrains the sea (וְכַד רָצִין גַּלִּין בְּאַרְבַּע רוּחִין, מִיָּד דְּחַזְיָין שְׁכִינְתָּא דְאִיהוּ חוֹל לֵב [נ״א לים], דְּאִיהִי חוֹל דְּאַסְחַר לְיַמָּא), it is said of them: “And return”-they return to their places (אִתְּמַר בְּהוֹן וָשׁוֹב, חָזְרָאן לְאַתְרַיְיהוּ). And these four winds, when they go forth from the heart, their motion is to the four directions of the ship Two into the two wings of the lungs, and two into the two chambers of the heart And the movement of the beating of the Ruach makes its motion And it beats in one point, or two, or three, and returns to its place And in the vowels of the beating the beating is known Sometimes it beats once and returns to its place And this beating is known in the vowels of the Orayta

At that time, when it beats in one point below, it is Chirek And if it is above, it is Cholem When it is in the middle, it is Shurek If it is above, it shows that fire is dominant, which is hot and dry and light Of it, it is said: “This is the law of the burnt offering” (דַעֲלֵיהּ אִתְּמַר זֹאת תּוֹרַת הָעוֹלָה) (Leviticus 6:2). And if it beats in a point below, it is Chirek, descending in water, which is cold and moist and heavy And if it beats in a point in the middle, it is Shurek, blowing with Ruach upon water, holding both, and it is hot and moist And this is when it beats once above and the beating ceases, or it beats once below and the beating ceases, or it beats once in the middle and the beating ceases And if it beats two times, one after the other, and the beating ceases, these are Tzeirei, whose beatings are equal But if it beats one point above and one point below, one after the other, these are Sheva, two points These are fire and water-sometimes this ascends and that descends: “The greater luminary to rule the day, and the lesser luminary to rule the night” (אִינוּן אֵשׁ וּמַיִם, לְזִמְנִין דָּא סָלִיק וְדָא נָחִית, כְּגוֹן אֶת הַמָּאוֹר הַגָּדוֹל [לממשלת היום] וְאֶת הַמָּאוֹר הַקָּטֹן [לממשלת הלילה]) (Bereshit 1:16). And sometimes they are equal, and they are shamayim-fire and water And sometimes it beats three beatings: one above, then a second in the middle, and then a third below-these are the three elements aroused in it: fire, water, and Ruach in the middle, and this is Shurek And if it beats two equal beatings, one after the other, and a point after them below, these are Segol-water, fire, and Ruach below And sometimes the beating is in extension-this is Patach And sometimes the beating is in extension, and a point is placed after it-this is Kamatz, in extension it shows mercy
