Daf 70b (דַּף ע ע״ב)
The ark of the Sefer Torah is the chamber of the heart (אֲרוֹנָא דְסֵפֶר תּוֹרָה דָא כִּיסָא דְלִבָּא), and it is a burning flame (וְאִיהוּ נוּר דָּלֵיק). And if not for the lobes of the lung which blow upon it (וְאִי לָא כַּנְפֵי רֵיאָה דְאִינוּן נָשְׁבִין עֲלֵיהּ), the heart would ignite the whole body (הֲוָה לִבָּא אוֹקִיד כָּל גּוּפָא). And that fire, which is the blood in the arteries of the heart (וְהַהוּא נוּרָא דְאִיהוּ דְּדָם דְּעַרְקִין דְּלִבָּא), the spirit blows after it in the arteries of the blood (רוּחָא נָשִׁיב אַבַּתְרֵיהּ בְּעַרְקִין דִּדְמָא), and all follow after it (וְכֻלְּהוּ מִתְנַהֲגִין אַבַּתְרֵיהּ). And this is what is written: “Wherever the spirit was to go, they went” (Ezekiel 1:12) And when from the heart the spirit rises - and it separates from the Nefesh, which is the Vav - upon the blood the fire burns (וְלִבָּא כַּד סָלִיק מִנֵּיהּ רוּחָא וְאִתְפָּרֵשׁ מִן נַפְשָׁא דְּאִיהוּ ו׳, עַל דְּמָא נוּר דָּלֵיק), it is said of the Nefesh: “I am asleep” (Song of Songs 5:2) (אִתְּמַר בְּנַפְשָׁא אֲנִי יְשֵׁינָה). And when the spirit comes to it, it is said: “But my heart is awake” (Song of Songs 5:2) And this is: “With my Nefesh I have desired You in the night, and with my spirit within me I will seek You” (Isaiah 26:9) And when the spirit comes to the heart, where is the Nefesh, it is said of it: “The voice of my beloved knocks” (Song of Songs 5:2)
He knocks at the gate of the heart, six knockings (דָּפִיק לְתַרְעָא דְלִבָּא שִׁית דְּפִיקִין), to make known that it is the Vav which comes to the Heh (some say: to the Dalet) which is the Nefesh (לְאִשְׁתְּמוֹדָע דְּאִיהוּ ו׳ דְּיֵיתֵי לְגַבֵּי ה׳ (נ״א ד׳), דְּאִיהִי נֶפֶשׁ). And in her are ten, and all are in appeasement This is what is written: “Open for Me, My sister, My companion, My dove, My perfect one, for My head is filled with dew” (Song of Songs 5:2) And in Tikkun Eighteen - some say: and in this Tikkun of six letters - which is “Created Six” (תִּקּוּנָא תַּמְנֵי סְרֵי נ״א וּבְתִקּוּנָא דָא שִׁית אַתְוָון, דְּאִיהוּ בָּרָ״א שִׁי״ת), they are hinted in this manner (אִינוּן רְמִיזִין כְּגַוְונָא דָא): “Open for Me” in the letter Bet, which is the gate (פִּתְחִי לִי בְּאָת ב׳ דְּאִיהִי תַּרְעָא). “My sister” in the letter Aleph “My companion” in the letter Reish “My dove” in the letter Yod “My perfect one” in the letter Tav “For My head is filled with dew” - this is the Yod, the point of the letter Bet
Its extremities are these six directions (קֶּוֵצּוֹתָיו אִלֵּין שִׁית סִטְרִין), of which it is written: “His legs are pillars of marble” (Song of Songs 5:15) (דְּאִתְּמַר בְּהוֹן שׁוֹקָיו עַמּוּדֵי שֵׁשׁ). And these knockings go and come for the four directions of His, and ascend and descend for His heavens and His earth And the six directions are six Sefirot And the knockings ascend and descend in them In the length of Chesed, in this manner, are the Tekiyot In the breaking of Gevurah, which are the Shevarim In the swiftness of the Middle Column, which is the Teruah In Chesed, Gevurah, Tiferet they ascend In Netzach, Hod, Yesod they descend And all of them knock towards the Shekhinta, which is the ladder (וְכֻלְּהוּ דָפְקִין לְגַבֵּי שְׁכִינְתָּא דְאִיהִי סֻלָּם), in which are six levels (דְּבֵיהּ שִׁית דַּרְגִּין), and this is the heart (וְדָא לִבָּא). And in it the angels of Elohim ascend and descend (וּבֵיהּ מַלְאֲכֵי אֱלֹהִים סָלְקִין וְנָחֲתִין), which are the knockings of the spirit (דְּאִינוּן דְּפִיקִין דְּרוּחָא). And these six ascend to ten, and this is Yod And they are Kashrak, Kshak, Krak p1-15(וְאִינוּן קַשְׁרַ״ק קְשַׁ״ק קְרַ״ק), until they are included in ten remembrances, ten kingships, and ten shofar-blasts (עַד דְּאִתְכְּלִילוּ בַּעֲשָׂרָה זִכְרוֹנוֹת וּבְעִשָׂר מַלְכִיּוֹת וּבְעִשָׂר שׁוֹפָרוֹת). Thirty ascend from below to above (תְּלָתִין סָלְקִין מִתַּתָּא לְעִילָא), and thirty descend from above to below (וּתְלָתִין נָחֲתִין מֵעִילָא לְתַתָּא). And they all ascend to sixty, six times ten When the knocking ascends with the force of Gevurah, then the judgment is strong When the knocking ascends and is extended, the shepherd is extended, for the staff inclines towards Chesed
Sava arose from among the masters of the Academy (קָם סָבָא מֵאִינוּן מָארֵי מְתִיבְתָּא), and said: Holy Luminary (וְאָמַר בּוֹצִינָא קַדִּישָׁא), behold these signs, they are the shepherd in exile (הָא סִמָּנִין אִלֵּין אִינוּן דְּמַרְעָא בְגָלוּתָא). When the knocking is shortened, the exile is shortened Behold, the staff inclines towards Gevurah, within the great judgment And the loins are shown to Mashiach and the tribes And because of this, that sickness is imposed in exile upon Yisrael: “I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem… that you not stir up nor awaken until it please” (Song of Songs 2:7) And if the knocking is extended, behold the staff is towards Chesed And with all this, the shepherd in exile is prolonged And if the knocking is not long and not short (וְאִי דְפִיקוּ אִיהוּ לָא אֲרִיךְ וְלָא קְצִר), behold mercy is aroused towards the sick one in exile, which is the heart (הָא אִתְעַר רַחֲמֵי לְגַבֵּי חוֹלֶה בְגָלוּתָא דְאִיהִי לִבָּא), and towards her arteries, which are the children of Yisrael (וּלְגַבֵּי עַרְקִין דִּילָהּ דְּאִינוּן בְּנָהָא יִשְׂרָאֵל). And this is the Middle Column (וְדָא אִיהוּ עַמּוּדָא דְאֶמְצָעִיתָא), of which it is said: “And with great mercies I will gather you” (Isaiah 54:7) (עֲלֵיהּ אִתְּמַר וּבְרַחֲמִים גְּדוֹלִים אֲקַבְּצֵךְ).
And furthermore, when the knocking is in Teruah, in swiftness, one pressure after another, redemption will come And furthermore, that sick one, which is the heart, when the spirit does not blow towards her (וְעוֹד הַהִיא חוֹלָה דְאִיהוּ לִבָּא, כַּד רוּחָא לָא נָשִׁיב לְגַבָּהּ), of which it is said: “And the spirit of Elohim was hovering over the face of the waters” (Bereshit 1:2) (דְּאִתְּמַר בֵּיהּ וְרוּחַ אֱלֹהִים מְרַחֶפֶת עַל פְּנֵי הַמָּיִם), she does not knock in her arteries (אִיהִי לָא דְפִיקַת בְּעַרְקִין דִּילָהּ). And all are considered in exile as the dead And it is said of them: “He has placed me in dark places, like the dead of old” (Lamentations 3:6) And because of this, in exile, “I am asleep” (וּבְגִין דָּא בְגָלוּתָא אֲנִי יְשֵׁנָה), and she is sick in exile (וְאִיהִי חוֹלָה בְגָלוּתָא). And how many healers, Talmidei Chakhamim (Torah scholars), labor for her (וְכַמָּה אַסְיָין תַּלְמִידֵי חֲכָמִים קָא מִשְׁתַּדְלָן לְגַבָּהּ), with how many spices and fragrances of roses, apples, nuts, and pomegranates (בְּכַמָּה בוּסְמִין וְרֵיחִין דְּשׁוֹשַׁנִּים תַּפּוּחִים וְאֱגוֹזִים וְרִמּוֹנִים). But the spirit does not return to her in them, in her exile, in her shepherd And no knocking returns to her (וְלָא דְפִיקוּ אִתְחַזְרַת לְגַבָּהּ), until Ra‘aya Meheimna, her beloved, comes (עַד דְּיֵיתֵי רָעִיָא מְהֵימְנָא רְחִימוּ דִילָהּ), of whom it is said: “The one who feeds among the lilies” (Song of Songs 2:16) (דְּאִתְּמַר בֵּיהּ הָרוֹעֶה בַּשּׁוֹשַׁנִּים). And he brings her an apple (וְאַיְיתֵי לָהּ תַּפּוּחַ), and sets it for a seal (וְשַׁוִּי לְחוֹטָמָא), and she smells it (וְאַרְחָא בֵיהּ), and she recognizes him (וְאִשְׁתְּמוֹדְעַת לְגַבֵּיהּ). This is what is written: “A comforter who restores my soul” (Lamentations 1:16) Immediately the spirit returns and the knocking to her
