Rabbi El'azar said (אָמַר רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר): if one has a servant and brings him out to freedom from his bondage (וְכִי מָאן דְּאִית לֵיהּ עַבְדָּא וְאַפִּיק לֵיהּ לְחֵירוּ מִשִּׁעִבּוּדֵיהּ), does his master have to praise himself for bringing out his servant to freedom? And is it that Kudsha Berikh Hu, who said to Avraham (Bereshit 15:13), your seed shall be a stranger, and so forth (כִּי גֵר יִהְיֶה זַרְעֲךָ וְגוֹ׳), has to praise Himself so many times: I am Hashem your Elohim who brought you out of the land of Egypt?
Rabbi Shimon said to him (אָמַר לֵיהּ רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן): so it surely is (הָכִי הוּא וַדַּאי). But here Kudsha Berikh Hu does not praise Himself for bringing them out of exile Rather, fifty times the exodus from Egypt is mentioned in the Orayta (אֶלָּא חַמְשִׁין זִמְנִין אַדְכִּיר בְּאוֹרַיְיתָא יְצִיאַת מִצְרַיִם), to make known the level by which He brought them out, which is Yovel (לְאִשְׁתְּמוֹדְעָא בְּדַרְגָּא דְאַפִּיק לוֹן דְּאִיהוּ יוֹבְלָא), of which it is said (דְּאִתְּמַר בֵּיהּ) (Leviticus 25:11), it shall be a jubilee, the fiftieth year (יוֹבֵל הִיא שְׁנַת הַחֲמִשִּׁים שָׁנָה). And these are the fifty gates of Binah (וְאִינוּן חַמְשִׁין תַּרְעִין דְּבִינָה), which were given to Moshe at Sinai except one that was not given to him (דְּאִתְמַסְרוּ לְמֹשֶׁה בְּסִינַי בַּר חַד דְּלָא אִתְמַסַּר לֵיהּ). And because of this fifty times the exodus from Egypt is mentioned in the Orayta He said: surely now my mind is settled
Who are other Elohim? These are the appointed chiefs of the seventy nations (אִלֵּין מְמַנָּן דְּשַׁבְעִין אוּמִין), and Samael and the serpent-that is Ayin-Bet (וְסמא״ל וְנָחָ״שׁ הָא ע״ב). Because of this Kudsha Berikh Hu gave the Orayta from the right, which is Chesed, and from the left, which is Gevurah For it has seventy faces, to redeem from the seventy nations And the Orayta was given from water and fire, which are the two (וְאוֹרַיְיתָא אִתְיְיהִיבַת מִמַּיָּא וְאֶשָּׁא דְאִינוּן תְּרֵין), to redeem Yisrael from Samael and the serpent, who are water and fire (לְשֵׁזָבָא לְיִשְׂרָאֵל מִסמא״ל וְנָחָשׁ דְּאִינוּן מִמַּיָּא וְאֶשָּׁא). And about them it is said (וּבְגִינַיְיהוּ אִתְּמַר) (Exodus 20:3), You shall have no other Elohim before Me (לֹא יִהְיֶה לְךָ אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים עַל פָּנָי). And corresponding to the seventy nations, seventy souls And whoever transgresses the seventy faces of the Orayta, of which it is said, You shall have no other Elohim before Me (וּמָאן דְּעָבַר עַל שַׁבְעִין אַנְפִּין דְּאוֹרַיְיתָא דְּאִתְּמַר לֹא יִהְיֶה לְךָ אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים עַל פָּנָי), the seventy chiefs and nations of the evil inclination rule over the seventy souls (שָׁלְטִין שַׁבְעִין מְמַנָּן וְאוּמִין דְּיֵצֶר הָרָע עַל שַׁבְעִין נֶפֶשׁ). And how many gilgulim shall come upon a man for these sins And if the man did not return in Teshuvah in these gilgulim (וְאִם לָא חָזַר בַּר נַשׁ בִּתְיוּבְתָּא בְּאִלֵּין גִּלְגּוּלִין), that body goes down to destruction (הַהוּא גוּפָא נָחִית בַּאֲבַדּוֹן). The first gilgul is imprinted with the color white (גִּלְגּוּלָא קַדְמָאָה אִצְטַבַּע בְּגַוָּון חִוָּור), and the soul rides upon a white horse, which is the body (וְרָכִיב נַפְשָׁא בְסוּסְיָא חִוְורָא דְאִיהוּ גוּפָא). If he returned in Teshuvah it is said of him (Isaiah 1:18), though your sins are as scarlet, they shall be white as snow And if not, he shall come in a second gilgul (וְאִם לַאו יֵתֵי בְגִלְגּוּלָא תִּנְיָינָא), and ride upon a red horse (וְרָכִיב בְּסוּסְיָא סוּמְקָא). And if he returned in Teshuvah, it is said of his sin (וְאִם חָזַר בִּתְיוּבְתָּא אִתְּמַר בְּחוֹבָא דִילֵיהּ) (ibid.), though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool (אִם יַאְדִּימוּ כַתּוֹלָע כַּצֶּמֶר יִהְיוּ). And if not, he shall return and gilgul in a third gilgul (וְאִם לָא, אִתְחַזַּר אִתְגַּלְגַּל בְּגִלְגּוּלָא תְּלִיתָאָה), and ride upon a green horse, and this is the body (וְרָכִיב בְּסוּסְיָא יְרוֹקָא וְדָא גוּפָא). And these are the constellations: Lion, Ox, and Eagle About them it is said (דַּעֲלַיְיהוּ אִתְּמַר) (Job 33:29), behold, all these does El work, twice, three times with a man (הֶן כָּל אֵלֶּה יִפְעַל אֵ״ל פַּעֲמַיִם שָׁלוֹשׁ עִם גָּבֶר). And if for these three He does not do for her (וְאִם שְׁלָשׁ אֵלֶּה לֹא יַעֲשֶׂה לָהּ) (Exodus 21:11), then for the soul, in three gilgulim (לְנַפְשָׁא בִּתְלַת גִּלְגּוּלִין), He shall provide her food, clothing, and duty of marriage (דְּעָבִיד לָהּ שְׁאֵר כְּסוּת וְעוֹנָה), and she shall go out free, without money (וְיָצְאָה חִנָּם אֵין כָּסֶף) (ibid.). And about three transgressions of Yisrael and about four I will not turn it back (Amos 2:6). And for the fourth, which is the constellation of Adam, I will not turn it back (וְעַל אַרְבָּעָה דְאִיהוּ מַזָּל אָדָם לֹא אֲשִׁיבֶנּוּ), so that he will not be corrupted (דְּלָא יְקַלְקְלוּ לֵיהּ). But for the Righteous, “and showing kindness to thousands” (אֲבָל לְצַדִּיקַיָּא וְעֹשֶׂה חֶסֶד לַאֲלָפִים) (Exodus 20:5)-thousands indeed (אֲלָפִים וַדַּאי). In three gilgulim he profits three thousands, which are the worlds of longing And for those who love Him and keep His commandments (Exodus 20:6), for the guilty who did not return in Teshuvah in these three gilgulim (לְחַיָּיבַיָּא דְּאִינְהוּ לָא יַחְזְרוּן בִּתְיוּבְתָּא בִּתְלַת גִּלְגּוּלִין אִלֵּין), it is said of them (אִתְּמַר בְּהוֹן) (Leviticus 23:30), and I will destroy that soul from among its people (וְהַאֲבַדְתִּי אֶת הַנֶּפֶשׁ הַהִיא מִקֶּרֶב עַמָּהּ).
Rabbi said (אָמַר רַבִּי): if so, where does it descend? Rather, there are seven earths (אֶלָּא שֶׁבַע אַרְעִין אִינוּן), and they ascend to seventy, corresponding to seventy souls (וְסָלְקִין לְשַׁבְעִין לָקֳבֵל שִׁבְעִים נֶפֶשׁ). And the seven earths are: Eretz (Earth), Adamah (Ground), Arka,p1-16 Gei (Valley), Tziyah (Dryness), Neshiya (Oblivion), Tevel (Inhabited World) And they are the seven dwellings of Gehinnom That soul that did not return in Teshuvah in these three, Kudsha Berikh Hu causes it to descend into these dwellings of Gehinnom (הַהִיא נַפְשָׁא דְלָא חָזְרָה בִּתְיוּבְתָּא בְּאִלֵּין תְּלַת, נָחִית לָהּ קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא בְּמָדוֹרִין דְּגֵיהִנָּם אִלֵּין), and there it is punished for generations of generations (וְתַמָּן אִתְנַשֵּׁי לְדָרֵי דָרִין). And if he is a Tzaddik, it is said of him (וְאִם הוּא צַדִּיק אִתְּמַר בֵּיהּ) (Proverbs 24:16), for a righteous one falls seven times and rises (כִּי שֶׁבַע יִפּוֹל צַדִּיק וָקָם). Rabbi El'azar said to him (אָמַר לֵיהּ רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר): and if he is a Tzaddik, why does he descend there? Rather, to bring out from there each and every soul from those who thought of Teshuvah and died in the shortening of their years And he labors for them This is the first utterance, which is Bereshit
Notes
A hidden land where the "Descendants of Cain" reside; it represents the deepest exile.
