Chapter Fifty-Eight (פֶּרֶק חֲמִשִּׁים וּשְׁמוֹנָה)

And behold, these three Gevurot (וְהִנֵּה אֵלֶּה הַג׳ גְּבוּרוֹת), are born within the center of the delight of the light of Ein Sof that is encompassed (הֵם נוֹלָדִים בְּאֶמְצָעִית הַשַּׁעֲשׁוּעַ שֶׁל אוֹר אֵין־סוֹף הַמּוּקָף), which delights in itself (שֶׁמִּשְׁתַּעֲשֵׁעַ בְּעַצְמוֹ), and every delight, as it were, gives birth to motion from our perspective (וְכׇל שַׁעֲשׁוּעַ הוּא מוֹלִיד כְּבִיָּכוֹל תְּנוּעָה לְגַבֵּי דִּידַן). And this you can see tangibly (וְזֶה תִּרְאֶה אוֹתוֹ מוּחָשׁ), that when you look at a star (שֶׁכְּשֶׁתַּבִּיט בְּכוֹכָב), you see it as if it moves (תִּרְאֶה אוֹתוֹ כְּמוֹ שֶׁהוּא מִתְנוֹעֵעַ), but it is not so - it is fixed in its place (וְאֵינוֹ כֵּן שֶׁהוּא קָבוּעַ בִּמְקוֹמוֹ). And from that delight, in which movement was concealed in potential (וּמֵאוֹתוֹ הַשַּׁעֲשׁוּעַ שֶׁהַתְּנוּעָה הָיְתָה גְּנוּזָה בְּתוֹכוֹ בַּכֹּחַ), and from our perspective it appears as if it went out into actuality (וּלְדִידַן נִרְאֶה כְּאִלּוּ יָצָא לַפֹּעַל), were born the letters of the Torah into actuality (נוֹלְדוּ אוֹתִיּוֹת הַתּוֹרָה לַפֹּעַל), which had been concealed in potential within it, as stated (שֶׁהָיְתָה גְּנוּזָה בְּתוֹכוֹ בַּכֹּחַ כָּאָמֻר). And this is what the verse says: “And I was with Him as a craftsman” (Proverbs 8) (וְהַהוּא דְּאָמַר קְרָא: "וָאֶהְיֶה אֶצְלוֹ אָמוֹן"), meaning: with Him, in His very Essence, blessed be He (כְּלוֹמַר: אֶצְלוֹ בְּעַצְמוּתוֹ יִתְבָּרַךְ מַמָּשׁ). For you already know that a physical flame (שֶׁכְּבָר יָדַעְתָּ שֶׁשַּׁלְהֶבֶת הַגַּשְׁמִיּוּת), when it moves and is close to burning (כְּשֶׁהִיא מִתְנוֹעַעַת וּסְמוּכָה לִשְׂרֹף), letters are born from it (נוֹלְדוּ מִמֶּנָּה אוֹתִיּוֹת), which are not like these physical letters (שֶׁאֵינָם כְּמוֹ אֵלֶּה הָאוֹתִיּוֹת הַגַּשְׁמִיּוֹת), but rather they cause wisdom (אֶלָּא הֵם מַחְכִּימוֹת), and declare future things (וּמַגִּידוֹת עֲתִידוֹת), and speak goodness (וּמְדַבְּרוֹת בַּטּוֹב), for one who merits to understand their speech (מִי שֶׁזוֹכֶה לְהָבִין דִּבְרֵיהֶם). If so, if this physical flame gives birth to letters (אִם כֵּן, אִם זֹאת הַשַּׁלְהֶבֶת הַגַּשְׁמִיּוּת מוֹלִידָה אוֹתִיּוֹת), all the more so, by far, the delight of Ein Sof, blessed be He (כָּל שֶׁכֵּן וּמִכָּל שֶׁכֵּן שַׁעֲשׁוּעַ שֶׁל אֵין־סוֹף יִתְבָּרַךְ). And these letters are born through the middle of the three Gevurot (וְאֵלֶּה הָאוֹתִיּוֹת נוֹלָדִים בְּאֶמְצָעוּת הַג׳ גְּבוּרוֹת), through the center of the delight and the Yesod that we mentioned above (בְּאֶמְצָעוּת הַשַּׁעֲשׁוּעַ וְהַיְּסוֹד שֶׁאָמַרְנוּ לְמַעְלָה), which joins the two membranes together (הַמְחַבֵּר הַשְּׁנֵי קְרוּמִים יַחַד), whose quality is like the quality of Tiferet (שֶׁאֵיכוּת שֶׁלּוֹ הוּא כְּמוֹ אֵיכוּת הַתִּפְאֶרֶת), which blends and joins Chesed and Gevurot together (שֶׁמְּמַזֵּג וּמְחַבֵּר חֲסָדִים וּגְבוּרוֹת יַחַד). And if you say: Why is Tiferet called Chesed, and Yesod called Gevurot (וְאִם תֹּאמַר: לָמָּה נִקְרֵאת ת״ת חֶסֶד, וִיסוֹד גְּבוּרוֹת), was it not fitting that neither Tiferet be called Chesed nor Yesod called Gevurah (שֶׁלֹּא הָיָה רָאוּי לְהִקָּרֵא לֹא תִּפְאֶרֶת חֶסֶד, וְלֹא יְסוֹד גְּבוּרָה), except in combination with both Chesed and Gevurot together (אֶלָּא בְּשִׁתּוּף עִם חֲסָדִים וּגְבוּרוֹת יַחַד), since both of them connect and harmonize the Chesed with the Gevurot (מֵאַחַר שֶׁשְּׁנֵיהֶם מְחַבְּרִים וּמְמַזְּגִים הַחֲסָדִים עִם הַגְּבוּרוֹת)? The answer is: because Tiferet inclines toward Chesed (וְהַתְּשׁוּבָה הִיא: מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהַתִּפְאֶרֶת הוּא מַטֶּה כְּלַפֵּי חֶסֶד), therefore it is called Chesed (לְכָךְ נִקְרֵאת חֶסֶד), and Yesod, which inclines toward Gevurah (וְהַיְסוֹד שֶׁהוּא מַטֶּה כְּלַפֵּי גְּבוּרָה), is therefore called Gevurah (לְכָךְ נִקְרָא גְּבוּרָה). However, this is specifically in this place (אֲבָל זֶה הוּא דַּוְקָא בַּמָּקוֹם הַזֶּה), where it is in the mystery of vowel-points (שֶׁשָּׁם הוּא בְּסוֹד נְקֻדּוֹת), where each one is on its own (שֶׁכָּל אֶחָד וְאֶחָד הִיא בִּפְנֵי עַצְמָהּ). But afterward, in the World of Tikkun (אֲבָל אַחֲרֵי כֵן בְּעוֹלַם הַתִּקּוּן), when Yesod is included within Ze’ir Anpin (כְּשֶׁנִּכְלַל יְסוֹד בִּכְלַל זְעֵיר), in the mystery of the Partzuf of Adam (בְּסוֹד פַּרְצוּף אָדָם), as it is said: “Body and covenant are reckoned as one” (כְּאָמְרוּ: "גוּף וּבְרִית חַשְׁבִינַן חַד"), then just as Ze’ir inclines toward Chesed (אָז כְּמוֹ שֶׁזְּעֵיר מַטֶּה כְּלַפֵּי חֶסֶד), so too Yesod inclines toward Chesed (כֵּן יְסוֹד מַטֶּה כְּלַפֵּי חֶסֶד).

And you already know that this Malbush (וְכְבָר יָדַעְתָּ שֶׁהַמַּלְבּוּשׁ הַזֶּה), the beginning of its root in the mystery of measurement and contraction (תְּחִלַּת שָׁרְשׁוֹ בְּסוֹד הַשִּׁיעוּר וְהַקִּמּוּץ), came from these Gevurot (הָיָה מִגְּבוּרוֹת אֵלֶּה), which are five (שֶׁהֵם חָמֵשׁ), each one consisting of ten (כָּל אַחַת כְּלוּלָה מֵ־י׳), corresponding to the fifty gates of Binah (כְּנֶגֶד חֲמִשִּׁים שַׁעֲרֵי בִינָה). And for this reason the Torah was given as “black fire upon white fire” (וְלָזֶה נִתְּנָה הַתּוֹרָה: "אֵשׁ שְׁחֹרָה עַל גַּבֵּי אֵשׁ לְבָנָה"). And since all the letters of the Malbush, their root and beginning is the letter Yod (וּלְהִיוֹת שֶׁכָּל הָאוֹתִיּוֹת שֶׁל הַמַּלְבּוּשׁ שָׁרְשָׁם וְהַתְּחָלָתָם הִיא אוֹת יו״ד), which is the Yod from the Malbush (שֶׁהִיא הַיּוֹד מִן הַמַּלְבּוּשׁ), reverse the letters of Yod and you will find “ink” - that is, black fire (הֲפוֹךְ אוֹתִיּוֹת יו״ד וּתְמָצֵא דְּיוֹ, דְּהַיְינוּ אֵשׁ שְׁחֹרָה), and they came in reversal (וּבָאוּ בְּהֵיפוּךְ), for it is congealed (לִהְיוֹת שֶׁהוּא מֻוגְלָם).
