Chapter Fifty-Seven (פֶּרֶק חֲמִשִּׁים וְשִׁבְעָה)

And you must know the engraving that is mentioned in the Zohar, Parashat Bereshit (וְצָרִיךְ אַתָּה לָדַעַת הַחֲקִיקָה שֶׁאוֹמֵר בַּזֹּהַר פָּרָשַׁת בְּרֵאשִׁית): "He engraved engraving in the Supernal Tehiru" (Zohar, Bereshit 15a) (״גְּלִיף גְּלִיפוֹי בְּטְהִירוּ עִילָּאָה״). The translation of Chakikah [Engraving] is Galifo [Engraving] (תַּרְגּוּם שֶׁל חֲקִיקָה הוּא גַלִיפוֹ), and the root of Galifo [Engraving] is Din [Judgment] (וְשׁוֹרֶשׁ הַגַּלִיפוֹ הוּא דִּין), giving measure and contraction to the letters (הַנּוֹתֵן שִׁעוּר וְקִמּוּץ אֶל הָאוֹתִיּוֹת), so that the parchment, which is Ein Sof, should not nullify the illumination of the ink, which are the letters (שֶׁלֹּא יְבַטֵּל הַנְּיָר שֶׁהוּא א״ס אֶת הַאֲרַת הַדְּיוֹ שֶׁהֵם הָאוֹתִיּוֹת). And the root of the engraving surrounds with force (וְשׁוֹרֶשׁ הַחֲקִיקָה הִיא מְסַבֶּבֶת בְּחָזָק), in a very great circle (בַּעֲגֻל גָּדוֹל מְאֹד), between the light of the Essence that surrounds outside the circle (בֵּין אוֹר עַצְמִיּוּת הַמַּקִּיף חוּץ לָעִגּוּל), and the Essence encompassed within the circle (וּבֵין עַצְמִיּוּת הַמּוּקָף אֲשֶׁר הוּא בְּתוֹךְ הָעִגּוּל). And this circle is called Supernal Tehiru (וְזֶה הָעִגּוּל נִקְרָא טְהִירוּ עִילָּאָה), to exclude simple Tehiru (לְאַפּוּקֵי טְהִירוּ סְתָם). And the translation of Tehiru is light (וְהַתַּרְגּוּם שֶׁל טְהִירוּ הוּא אוֹר), for Ein Sof is called by the name “light” (כִּי אֵין־סוֹף נִקְרָא בְּשֵׁם אוֹר), and it is impossible to call Him by any other name (וְאִי אֶפְשָׁר לְכַנּוֹתוֹ בְּשֵׁם אַחֵר). And because of this, the circle of contraction is called Supernal Tehiru in the Aramaic language (וּמִפְּנֵי זֶה עִגּוּל הַקִּמּוּץ נִקְרָא טְהִירוּ עִילָּאָה בִּלְשׁוֹן תַּרְגּוּם), for the Targum contains a degree of darkness and withholding of light (שֶׁהוּא הַתַּרְגּוּם קְצָת חֹשֶׁךְ וּמְנִיעַת הָאוֹר). And this Tehiru is called Ila’ah (supernal) and not Kadma’ah (first) (וְהַטְּהִירוּ הַזֶּה נִקְרָא עִילָּאָה וְלֹא קַדְמָאָה), because the light of Ein Sof that was engraved within it preceded it (מִפְּנֵי שֶׁכְּבָר קִדַּם אוֹר אֵין־סוֹף הַנֶּחְקָק בּוֹ), the engraving (הַגַּלִיפוֹ). And also Tehiru, in gematria with the word itself, is 231 (וְגַם טְהִירוּ בְּגִימַטְרִיָּא עִם הַמִּלָּה רל״א), to indicate that it strengthens the position and standing of all the Alef–Bet combinations (לְהוֹרוֹת שֶׁהוּא מַחֲזִיק מַצָּב וּמַעֲמַד הָאַלְפָּ״א בֵּיתוֹת כֻּלָּם). And this circle is the hindrance that restrains the light of Ein Sof outside the circle (וְעִגּוּל זֶה הוּא עִכּוּב הַמְעַכֵּב אוֹר אֵין־סוֹף שֶׁחוּץ לָעִגּוּל), that it should not nullify the light within the circle (שֶׁלֹּא יְבַטֵּל אוֹר מַה שֶׁבְּתוֹךְ הָעִגּוּל). And in this hindrance there are three aspects (וְיֵשׁ בַּזֶּה הָעִכּוּב ג׳ בְּחִינוֹת): the first is the light of Ein Sof that surrounds Malkhut (הָאַחַת הִיא בְּחִינַת אוֹר אֵין־סוֹף הַמַּקִּיף הַמַלְכוּת); the second is the light of Ein Sof that is encompassed within the circle (וּבְחִינָה ב׳ הִיא בְּחִינַת אוֹר אֵין־סוֹף הַמּוּקָף בְּתוֹךְ הָעִגּוּל); and the third is the light of Ein Sof, Blessed Be He, that is between the surrounding and the encompassed (וּבְחִינָה הַג׳ הִיא אוֹר אֵין־סוֹף בָּרוּךְ הוּא מַה שֶׁבֵּין הַמַּקִּיף וְהַמּוּקָף), it is literally the parchment upon which the letters stand (הוּא מַמָּשׁ הַנְּיָר שֶׁעָלָיו עוֹמְדִים הָאוֹתִיּוֹת), and it is called Oray Ne’arav (וְנִקְרָא אוֹרִי נַעֲרָב). And these three aspects are three aspects of Gevurot (וְאֵלּוּ הַג׳ בְּחִינוֹת הֵם שָׁלוֹשׁ בְּחִינוֹת גְּבוּרוֹת), meaning that everything limited - that is, appearing to us as if it has measure - is judgment relative to Ein Sof, Blessed Be He (רְצוֹנִי לוֹמַר: שֶׁכָּל דָּבָר הַנִּגְבָּל דְּהַיְינוּ שֶׁנִּרְאֶה כְּלַפֵּי דִּידַן שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ שִׁעוּר, הוּא דִּין לְגַבֵּי אֵין־סוֹף בָּרוּךְ הוּא), because Ein Sof, Blessed Be He, is Chesed expanding infinitely in His kindness (מִפְּנֵי שֶׁאֵין־סוֹף בָּרוּךְ הוּא חֶסֶד מִתְפַּשֵּׁט בְּחַסְדּוֹ עַד אֵין־סוֹף וְאֵין קֵץ), therefore the withholding of expansion is judgment (אִם כֵּן מְנִיעַת הַהִתְפַּשְׁטוּת הִיא דִּין). Therefore, the circle of the Supernal Tehiru, as it appears to us (לָכֵן הָעִגּוּל שֶׁל טְהִירוּ עִילָּאָה הַנִּרְאֵית כְּלַפֵּי דִּידַן), is three judgments (הִיא ג׳ דִּינִין): the first judgment - that the light of Ein Sof which surrounds outside the circle (הַדִּין הָאֶחָד; שֶׁאוֹר אֵין־סוֹף הַמַּקִּיף חוּץ לָעִגּוּל), restrains itself from entering into the circle (מְעַכֵּב עַצְמוֹ מִלִּכָּנוֹס בְּתוֹךְ הָעִגּוּל), into the Malbush (תּוֹךְ הַמַּלְבּוּשׁ), so that it not cause, Heaven forbid, nullification (שֶׁלֹּא יִגְרֹם בִּטּוּל חַס וְשָׁלוֹם). The second judgment - that the light of Ein Sof, Blessed is He, which is encompassed (הַדִּין הַב׳; שֶׁאוֹר אֵין־סוֹף בָּרוּךְ הוּא הַמּוּקָף), restrains itself from expanding outward from the circle (מְעַכֵּב עַצְמוֹ מֵהִתְפַּשֵּׁט וְלָצֵאת חוּץ לָעִגּוּל), and from connecting with the surrounding Ein Sof (וְלֹא יִתְחַבֵּר בְּאֵין־סוֹף הַמַּקִּיף), so that there be no nullification, Heaven forbid, of the Malbush (וִיהֵא בִּטּוּל חַס וְשָׁלוֹם לַמַּלְבּוּשׁ), and there be no absolute equality in their light (וִיהֵא שִׁוּוּי אֶחָד בְּאוֹרָם), and there be, Heaven forbid, no state or standing for the letters of judgment (וְלֹא יִהְיֶה חַס וְשָׁלוֹם מַצָּב וּמַעֲמָד לְהָאוֹתִיּוֹת הַדִּין). The third - it is the light of Ein Sof that emerges from the two restraints (הַג׳; הוּא אוֹר אֵין־סוֹף הַמִּתְהַוֶּה מִן הַשְּׁנֵי עִכּוּבִים), and strengthens their contraction within the letters (וּמְחַזֵּק אֶת הַקִּמּוּץ שֶׁלָּהֶם בְּתוֹךְ הָאוֹתִיּוֹת), so that they not go outside it or outside the Malbush (וְלֹא שֵׁיֵּצְאוּ חוּצָה לָהּ וְחוּץ לַמַּלְבּוּשׁ). And these three judgments are: Binah, Gevurah, Yesod (וְאֵלּוּ הַג׳ דִּינִין הֵם: בִּינָה, גְּבוּרָה, יְסוֹד). And if you say: But isn’t the quality of Hod also from the Gevurot (וְאִם תֹּאמַר: וַהֲלֹא מִדַּת הוֹד הִיא גַם כֵּן מִן הַגְּבוּרוֹת), and it is higher than Yesod (וְהִיא יוֹתֵר עֶלְיוֹנָה מִן הַיְסוֹד), if so, why did we say that the third judgment is in the quality of Yesod and not in Hod? (אִם כֵּן לָמָּה אָמַרְנוּ שֶׁהַדִּין הַשְּׁלִישִׁי הוּא בְּמִדַּת יְסוֹד וְלֹא בְּמִדַּת הוֹד) It may be said: because the nature of Yesod is to connect (וְיֵשׁ לוֹמַר: לְפִי שֶׁטֶּבַע הַיְסוֹד לְחַבֵּר), as you know, that it belongs to the harmonizing middot (כְּמוֹ שֶׁיָּדַעְתָּ שֶׁהוּא מִן הַמְּמֻזָּגִים), which is not the case in Hod (מַה שֶּׁאֵין כֵּן בְּהוֹד). Therefore, that light of restraint that emerges from between them (וְלָכֵן אוֹתוֹ הָאוֹר הָעִכּוּב הַמִּתְהַוֶּה מִבֵּין שְׁנֵיהֶם), this is Yesod, which connects their faces together (הוּא יְסוֹד שֶׁמְּחַבֵּר פְּנֵיהֶם יַחַד), according to the nature of Yesod to connect (כְּטֶבַע הַיְסוֹד לְחַבֵּר). And that restraining light that surrounds is Binah (וְאוֹתוֹ הָעִכּוּב הַמַּקִּיף הוּא בִּינָה), for judgments and Gevurot are awakened from her when she restrains (דְּדִּינִין וּגְבוּרוֹת מִתְעָרִין מִינָּה בְּהִתְעַכְּבָהּ). And that restrained light encompassed within the circle is the quality of Gevurah (וְאוֹתוֹ הָעִכּוּב הַמּוּקָף בְּתוֹךְ הָעִנּוּל הוּא בְּחִינַת גְּבוּרָה), which is as it were “a king bound in the channels” (שֶׁהוּא כְּבִיָּכוֹל: "מֶלֶךְ אָסוּר בָּרְהָטִים").
