Chapter Five (פֶּרֶק חֲמִישִּׁי)
The distinction and the superiority that exists between the Garment and the Primordial Air (הַהֶפְרֵשׁ וְהַמַּעֲלָה שֶׁיֵּשׁ בֵּין הַלְּבוּשׁ לַאֲוִיר קַדְמוֹן), which is beneath the Garment (שֶׁהוּא לְצַד מַטָּה מִן הַלְּבוּשׁ), and the Tehiru is in the middle (וְהַטְּהִירוּ הוּא בָּאֶמְצָע). Know that the Garment is more elevated than the Primordial Air (דַּע כִּי הַלְּבוּשׁ הוּא יוֹתֵר מְעוּלֶה מֵאֲוִיר קַדְמוֹן), since it is attached to Ein Sof (בְּהִיוֹת כִּי הוּא דָּבוּק עִם אֵין סוֹף). And the Primordial Air, which is close to the Garment and also to the Tehiru (וְאֲוִיר קַדְמוֹן שֶׁהוּא קָרוֹב לַמַּלְבּוּשׁ וְגַם כֵּן לַטְּהִירוּ), is not as elevated, due to the intermediary position of the Garment (אֵינוֹ כָּל כָּךְ מְעוּלֶה מִפְּנֵי אֶמְצָעִיּוּת הַלְּבוּשׁ). But downward, where there is no Garment (אֲבָל לְצַד מַטָּה שֶׁאֵין בּוֹ מַלְבּוּשׁ), would you say it is on the level of the Garment?! (תֹּאמַר שֶׁהוּא בְּמַדְרֵגַת הַלְּבוּשׁ), It is not so (אֵינוֹ כֵּן), for due to the adhesion of the Primordial Air to the Tehiru (מִפְּנֵי הִתְדַּבְּקוּתוֹ שֶׁל אֲוִיר קַדְמוֹן בְּטְהִירוּ), which has some thickness relative to it (שֶׁיֵּשׁ בּוֹ קְצָת עָבִיּוּת לְגַבֵּי דִּידֵיהּ), it does not allow it to attach to Ein Sof (אֵינוֹ מַנִּיחַ לוֹ לְהִדָּבֵק עִם אֵין סוֹף), as does the Garment, which has nothing preventing it (כְּמוֹ הַלְּבוּשׁ שֶׁאֵין לוֹ דָּבָר מוֹנֵעַ). If so, even though the Primordial Air, which is below, is near to Ein Sof (אִם כֵּן גַּם כִּי הָאֲוִיר קַדְמוֹן שֶׁהוּא לְצַד מַטָּה קָרוֹב לְאֵין סוֹף), it cannot be on the level of the Garment (אֵינוֹ יָכוֹל לִהְיוֹת בְּמַדְרֵגַת הַלְּבוּשׁ), because it is attached to the Tehiru (לִהְיוֹתוֹ דָּבוּק בְּטְהִירוּ). And the name of the Primordial Air, which is its essential vitality, is the thirteen Mems (וּשְׁמוֹ שֶׁל אֲוִיר קַדְמוֹן שֶׁהוּא עִקַּר חַיּוּתוֹ, הוּא י״ג מ״ם), that is, thirteen of the species of Mem (דְּהַיְינוּ י״ג מִמִּין). And just as the closed Mem encompasses everything (וּכְמוֹ שֶׁהַמֵּם סְתוּמָה מַקִּפָה אֶת הַכֹּל), so too does the Primordial Air encompass everything (כֵּן אֲוִיר קַדְמוֹן מַקִּיף אֶת הַכֹּל). And because the Primordial Air is exceedingly subtle (וּמִפְּנֵי שֶׁאֲוִיר קַדְמוֹן הוּא דַּק עַד מְאֹד), and is encompassed by Ein Sof (וּמוּקָף מֵאֵין סוֹף), therefore for this reason it has the name Mem (לָכֵן לְסִבָּה זוֹ יֵשׁ לוֹ שֵׁם מֵ״ם), whose filling is like itself (שֶׁמִּלּוּאוֹ כְּמוֹהוּ), and there is no change in it at all (וְאֵין בּוֹ שִׁנּוּי כְּלָל), just as there is no change in the Ein Sof that is close to it and united with it (כְּמוֹ שֶׁאֵין שִׁנּוּי לְאֵין סוֹף הַקָּרוֹב לוֹ וּמוּדְבָּק בּוֹ). And it has thirteen letters (וְיֵשׁ לוֹ י״ג אוֹתִיּוֹת), because it is made from the Yod, which is the artisan (מִפְּנֵי שֶׁנֶּעֱשָׂה מֵהַיּו״ד שֶׁהִיא אוּמָנָה), the craftswoman of the Holy One, blessed be He (אוּמָנִית שֶׁל הקב״ה), and the Yod is formed, as Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai wrote in several places (וְהַיּו״ד נַעֲשֵׂית כְּמוֹ שֶׁכָּתַב רַשְׁבִּ״י בְּכַמָּה דּוּכְתִּין): “a point above, a point below, and a line in the middle” (קוּצָא לְעֵילָּא, קוּצָא לְתַתָּא, גִּיו אֶמְצָעִיתָא), that is, a point above, a point below, and an axis between (שֶׁהִיא נְקוּדָּה לְמַעְלָה, נְקוּדָּה לְמַטָּה, וְתוֹוֵךְ בָּאֶמְצָע). And the Primordial Air has a portion of this Yod mentioned from the Name S”G (וְיֵשׁ לַאֲוִיר קַדְמוֹן חֵלֶק מֵהַיּו״ד הַנִּזְכֶּרֶת שֶׁל שֵׁם ס״ג). It follows that through the threefold structure of the Yod (נִמְצָא לְפִי ג׳ בְּחִינוֹת חִלְקֵי הַיּו״ד), there are three simple Names Havayah (יֵשׁ שְׁלוֹשָׁה שֵׁמוֹת הֲוָיוֹת פְּשׁוּטִים), which are twelve letters (שֶׁהֵם י״ב אוֹתִיּוֹת), and the kolel - which is Ein Sof that unites them - makes thirteen letters for each (וְהַכּוֹלֵל שֶׁהוּא אֵין סוֹף הַמְחַבֵּר אוֹתָם, הֲרֵי י״ג אוֹתִיּוֹת לְכָל אֶחָד). And these thirteen letters are the root of all the subsequent groups of thirteen in the World of Tikkun (וְי״ג אוֹתִיּוֹת אֵלּוּ הֵם שֹׁרֶשׁ לְכָל הַי״ג שֶׁיָּבוֹאוּ אַחַר זֶה בְּעוֹלַם הַתִּקּוּן) - namely, the thirteen rectifications of the beard of Arich Anpin (שֶׁהֵם י״ג תִּיקּוּנֵי הַזָּקָן דְּאֲרִיךְ אַנְפִּין), and the thirteen in Ze’ir Anpin when he receives four from Arich Anpin (וְי״ג שֶׁבְּזְעֵיר אַנְפִּין כְּשֶׁיוֹרְדִים לוֹ ד׳ מֵאֲרִיךְ אַנְפִּין), for Ze’ir Anpin has only nine (כִּי לְזְעֵיר אַנְפִּין אֵין לוֹ אֶלָּא ט׳), and from Ze’ir Anpin they descend into Malkhut (וּמִזְּעֵיר אַנְפִּין יוֹרְדִים לְמַלְכוּת), for Malkhut has only six rectifications (כִּי לְמַלְכוּת אֵין לָהּ אֶלָּא ו׳ תִּיקּוּנִים). And this is what is written: “Six steps to the throne” (I Kings 10:19) (וְזֶהוּ דִּכְתִיב: שֵׁשׁ מַעֲלוֹת לַכִּסֵּא). And they are not in the mystery of the beard (וְאֵינָם בְּסוֹד הַזָּקָן), for she has no beard (כִּי אֵין לָהּ זָקָן), except from the mystery of her own rectifications (אֶלָּא מִסוֹד תִּיקּוּנֵי עַצְמָהּ), and from her they are drawn downward into the World of Beri’ah (וּמִמֶּנָּה נִמְשָׁכִים לְמַטָּה בְּעוֹלַם הַבְּרִיאָה), and they are the thirteen rivers of pure balsam (וְהֵם י״ג נְהָרֵי אַפַּרְסְמוֹנָא דַכִּיא), which are the good reward for the Tzaddikim (שֶׁהֵם הַשָּׂכָר הַטּוֹב לַצַּדִּיקִים).
