Chapter Six (פֶּרֶק שִּׁשִּׁי)
Know (דַּע) that the Primordial Air is entirely Ein [Nothingness] (שֶׁהָאֲוִיר קַדְמוֹן הוּא כֻּלּוֹ אַיִן), for it was formed only through the absence and withdrawal of the light of half the Malbush [Garment] (שֶׁלֹּא נַעֲשָׂה כִּי אִם בְּהֶעְדֵּר וּבְהִסְתַּלְּקוּת הָאוֹר חֲצִי הַמַּלְבּוּשׁ), and the Reshimu [Imprint] remained, as we said (שֶׁנִּשְׁאַר הָרְשִׁימוּ כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמַרְנוּ), and that Reshimu [Imprint] is Ein [Nothingness] (וְאוֹתוֹ הָרְשִׁימוּ הוּא אַיִן). But relative to the absolute Ein [Nothingness] that existed previously, the Reshimu [Imprint] is called Yesh [Existence] (אֶלָּא שֶׁבְּעֵרֶךְ אוֹתוֹ הָאַיִן הַמֻּחְלָט שֶׁהָיָה מִקֹּדֶם נִקְרָא הָרְשִׁימוּ יֵשׁ), yet it is not a complete Yesh [Existence], but rather an Avir [Air] that cannot be grasped and also cannot be seen (וְאֵינוֹ יֵשׁ גָּמוּר כִּי אִם אֲוִיר שֶׁאֵינוֹ נִתְפַּס, וְגַם אֵינוֹ נִרְאֶה). For the Ohr [Light]—although it cannot be grasped—at least it is visible (כִּי הָאוֹר, אַף עַל גַּב דְּאֵינוֹ נִתְפַּס, לְפָחוֹת נִרְאֶה); but this Avir [Air] is utterly removed from both (אֲבָל הָאֲוִיר הַזֶּה הוּא מֻחְלָט מִשְּׁנֵיהֶם), it is neither graspable nor visible (שֶׁאֵינוֹ נִתְפַּס וְאֵינוֹ נִרְאֶה). And it is called Primordial Air because it is even devoid of sensation (וְנִקְרָא אֲוִיר קַדְמוֹן מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהוּא שָׁלוּל גַּם מֵהַרְגָּשָׁה). And thus this Avir [Air] is compounded of both Avir [Air] and Ohr [Light] (וּלְזֶה הָאֲוִיר הַזֶּה הוּא מְרֻכָּב מֵאֲוִיר וְאוֹר), as if it were Avir [Air] within Ohr [Light] (כְּאִלּוּ הוּא אֲוִיר בְּתוֹךְ אוֹר)—a wonder within a wonder (שֶׁהוּא תֵּמָה עַל תֵּמָה). And this is what the verse says: "Tohu vaVohu [Chaos and Void]" (Genesis 1:2) (וְזֶהוּ שֶׁאָמַר הַכָּתוּב: ״תֹּהוּ וָבֹהוּ״), for a person stands astonished and bewildered before it (שֶׁהָאָדָם תּוֹהֶה וּבוֹהֶה בּוֹ), for it has neither the sight of Ohr [Light] nor the sensation of Avir [Air] (שֶׁאֵין לוֹ לֹא רְאִיַּת אוֹר וְלֹא הַרְגָּשַׁת אֲוִיר).
